Good product, but very poor customer service or processes

I enquired about having some furniture installed at Hammonds sited inside a local department store. The assistant was very attentive, explained a few things and showed some examples and mock set-ups. All very good.

The first "onsite" visit I expressed that I required some cupboards custom cut due to the shape of the room and my wish for a particular custom made corner robe to suit my plans. The final layout there were no custom sizes as requested and the person insisted on me having a standard corner robe and not the one I mentioned. The layout was not what I had planned or described, and they were hesitant to change their layout.
Given that I had an approximate idea of cost, I would have expected a little more customer empathy, I insisted it be planned my way or they leave immediately, and so it was changed I believe reluctantly.

The second visit "planning" the person went through the plan, making more changes, criticising the original reps layout. He did appear to be more attuned.

Company very quick to contact and get deposits and provide install date.

Couldn't fault the fitter, consulted and made minor changes during install, very tidy, and professional job done. Although fitter informs me he's subcontract and not a Hammonds employee.

Once install done, expecting someone to contact me for final payment as mentioned would happen. No one contacts me, no final vat invoice, 14 days later a letter from hammonds "Notice before proceedings", contact them via their website stating this, and an automated reply that it will be addressed within 15 days (only got 7 days to make final payment in letter). Finally contact someone at Hammonds who reliably informs me that I am not the first person to have mentioned this.

Can't really fault the furniture or the install, but the other items especially the final demand has left a bitter taste in my mouth, would I use this company again? No! Based on their systems and attitude, as I believe customer service should outweigh product, and if a product is good you shouldn't have to put up with poor customer service

Good quality and nice to use

We are pleased with our wardrobes. They look good and are pleasurable to use. The planning was efficiently done by the salesman. Having agreed to the price and the design, I was surprised to find that the company then insisted a surveyor was called to check everything! He rang me to cheek that the appointment I had made with the office was convenient and told me that it would take about 2 hours. This was far too long for the time I had already agreed so he had to come a few days later. When he did come - it took 20 minutes!! I can't say I was pleased! The fitter arrived in due course - early - before 8 o'clock, which was good. He was clearly experienced and did a good job, I thought, BUT he did not leave until 11 o'clock at night!!! If he had been sent an assistant, it would have taken far less time. I was climbing the walls by the time he left! So, good product, good work but over-kill on the planning and for goodness sake give your poor fitters a helper - for them as well as the customers!

Hammonds Furniture

Presently I am trying to sort out the wardrobe I had fitted in 2010 to be repaired as it is coming away from the wall. Whilst covered under gaurauntee I have waited over 2 weeks with e-mail's not returned and I have yet too receive a call from Head Office depsite leaving numerous messages and being promised a return call. Originally I was told my e-mail was not received yet it was not returned to sender so someone in hammonds must have recieved it. The store manager has been most helpful and has done all she can to resolve this issue.

The furniture is not cheap and you pay for quality and you expect good service-At present I am very disappointed and would not recommend Hammonds-I await eagerly someone to return my calls and put right this fault.

Pushy sales and woeful quality control

Had John Lewis Wardrobes last year ( Hammonds supply them) and was very happy with excellent sales, design and service. As Hammonds offer a wider range directly we approached them, Salesman was the old fashioned stay til 11pm and pretend to call the manager for a discount type. Started with a price and came down over 2k!
Hammonds could fit on Feb 1st, a date I never asked for and which was not convenient as I had repeatedly said we had to wait until my son moved out later in the month; I was told they would charge me a storage charge for holding onto the wardrobes! I pointed out that the surveyor had only measured up the night before so they must have made them pretty damn quick!
Fitting took 3 days during which both bedrooms being fitted were out of use. The larger room was used as work room with circular saw etc. This caused a lot of mess and didnt happen with John Lewis.
The plinths and cornices were poorly cut and unacceptable for such an expensive product, all nibbled and uneven. They were eventually sorted but overall the finish is nothing like as good as the John Lewis wardrobe which is the same range and colour!
One of the wardrobe doors in my younger sons' room had a fault and the first replacement was the wrong design and the second had an even worse fault! I have now waited in on 3 separate days for the door because as a customer I have nothing better to do! This morning I noticed that the bottom plinth on one of the bedside cabinets is coming away and the room hasnt even been occupied!
Fed up, as every call takes for ever for them to answer and they do not call back.
Would I use them again......no I flipping wouldn't!

I can't believe these reviews

I do wonder if these reviews are fakes, done by company employees. We had appalling service from start to finish.
Then the surveyor got the measurements all wrong. We paid to have the existing wardrobes ripped out, but when the fitter turned up, all the bits of wood were the wrong size. We then had 10 days of not being able to use the bedroom, which looked like a bombsite.
Then another fitter turned up, or rather he didn't. He called in sick, and turned up the next day. He complained that Hammonds were not paying fitters enough. Doesn't surprise me.
I'm left with an unpleasant memory of the whole thing. The final wardrobes are OK, but I wish I'd gone with someone else. They make a big fuss of the service you get. Rubbish !
Go with someone else, and find a fitter yourself.

unprofessional and shoddy

I have an outstanding complaint with Hammonds Furniture for the shoddy workmanship of my fitted wardrobe put in at the beginning of February this year. No matter how many times I call I still cant get the issue resolved in a manner that suits me...the customer. They make false statements and never keep their promises. I am still waiting for a return call from Jasmine who promised on Friday to call me back first thing yesterday.....all I can say is in my experience they are dishonest and unprofessional. Don't buy from them!

Dreadful. Avoid Hammonds.

My experience with Hammonds was awful. Incompetence from start to finish. The designer made plans that could not be fitted, the surveyor got the measurements wrong, the fitter took four attempts to get it right. We had four months with no wardrobes until we finally got them fitted. Even then, they were wrong and were faulty within weeks. Unbelievably bad all round. Unless you enjoy spending lots of time on hold on the phone trying to get through to someone on customer services then avoid this company.

A good supplier of fitted bedrooms.

We were very satisfied with the first installation at our old address and fairly satisfied with our bedroom at our new address. However, when we called to report that the wardrobe doors needed adjustment we were told that hey are easy to adjust ourselves. This somewhat lowered out opinion of their aftersale sevice.

Professionalism personified

Cannot praise highly enough the quality of furniture recently provided from Hammonds. That, coupled with the expertise of the staff from start to finish made it a stress free purchase. I also changed my mind half way through as to the colour of my furniture. Not a problem, did not affect the installation time and they did not make me feel like I was being a nusiance.

Excellent worksmanship

I recently had a bedroom fitted out by Sharps which was expensive and never seemed quite finished and now one of the door hinges has failed, Hammond's on the other hand was excellent.
Fitted in less than two days, cheaper than Sharps and overall better quality.
Very pleased with the overall finish, workmanship and Hammond's follow up.

Awful! Will never use them again!!

If I could give no stars I would! Disgrace! After about 4 failed attempts of fitting, 4 days taken off work, countless phone calls to find out what was going on I finally get them fitted with the wrong handels!

Top Quality

Second time used, both good. Staff in display site good and know what they are talking about. Sales staff who visit are good and not pushy. Fitter excellent and no loud radio blaring whilst working.

Excellent product, great service, can fully recommend this to others.

We bought a new-build house recently which already had inlcuded 2 sets of Hammonds' built-in gardenia wardrobes in bedrooms 1 & 2. We decided to have them fitted also to the third bedroom to give us more storage space. After enquiring about this, a fitter came promptly, measured up and made suggestions, then the wardrobes were installed on our chosen day. The work was excellent, the product we already knew was superb. We are absolutely delighted with them and feel on the whole the product and service is splendid. The new wardrobes were literally tailor-made as I wanted doors opening a particular way and some hanging space but also some shelving. We got exactly what we wanted custom built. We would highly recommend this company to anyone else. Real value for money and a superior product!

Very efficient and professional workmanship

We are very pleased with our fitted bedroom fitted by Hammonds. There was anly a short wait between survey and fitting. Sales rep, surveyor and fitter were all very polite and helpful, and the finished fittings are completed to a high standard.

Helpful Hammonds. Everything was carried out according to specification, despite significant difficulties associated with construction in a very old house.

We were very pleased with the final finished product. The initial planning ideas were very helpful and we went to the showroom in Bristol to look at various features and product finishes. There were significant difficulties associated with our house as it is very old with very uneven floors and non-vertical walls. The fitters scribed everything in beautifully despite the fact that the fitting time turned out to be more than double the original estimate. Well done to Hammonds for not trying to scrimp on the final finish. Having lived with the furniture for more than 6 months we are still delighted and certain that we made the right choice.

VERY GOOD FROM START TO FINISH

IT WAS ALL EXPLAINED WHAT WAS TO BE FITTED AND THE COMPUTER GRAPHICS WERE FANTASTIC WE SAW WHAT THE ROOM WOULD LOOK LIKE AND WERE ABLE TO ALTER THINGS EASILY. IT WAS DELIVERED AND FITTED ON TIME BY A REAL TRADESMAN.

Furniture lovely but...

Bedroom furniture was beautifully put together and still looks new. However they did not leave enough room for their bed which meant that the legs needed to be turned under rather than out. This caused the bed to collapse and be repaired twice. Eventually it was agreed that it was not fit for purpose and they were unwilling to adapt the legs and I was therefore left having to find a bed to match what is actually quite a unique colour.

Although - eventually - a refund was forthcoming, I am still left with a dreadfully damaged wall where the bed collapsed ruining what was freshly, professionally wallpapered room. No compensation for this has been forthcoming. I feel it all a little shabby for a company that prides itself on it's family run customer service. I even had to wait for Mr Hammond to sign my refund cheque.

Efficient

Fitters were very polite & very quiet but did not communicate much.
I had a problem with my ceiling which cracked slightly when the old wardrobes were removed. Although not in the contract Dale said he would obtain a small length of wood of the same material to hide the crack. After several weeks & some phone calls he finally arrived with the wrong colour. He said he would get a piece & get back to me. Needless to say I am still waiting so although on the whole I am happy with the product the final touch would have been appreciated. Perhaps you could remind him for me as I now feel that if I ring him again he'll think I'm being a nuisance. Overall a good product although I was surprised how much room the carcass took & I am left with less storage in the wardrobe than before. Also the hanging rail is very high on the two tier side & I'm not a short person.

Bedroom Bliss with comfort and style.

We are delighted with our bedroom makeover. It looks modern and stylish and has excellent storage space. Having decided to refit our bedroom and collected some possible options for manufacturers, the Hammonds brochure stood out from the rest. Our experience was good from the start with the initial visit from the friendly helpful designer to the fitting itself. Scott the fitter worked hard and seemed as pleased as us with the results!

Sleek, smooth and stylish with space to spare.

The guy who fitted my wardrobes was excellent. He never left a mess and was thorough and precise. The wardrobes are excellent with loads of room especially the corner long hanging one. I love the look and the dust free doors!! The shelving and small bespoke cupboard are brill too. The best bit is that I can easily see what I'm looking for.

Clean and fresh to wake up to.

The installation was well carried out.
Although the modern furniture supplied by you is well manufactured, I cannot help comparing it will the quality of the furniture supplied by you in the early 1990's. The thickness of the earlier furniture is much greater that today's produce and I suspect will last longer. However, the improvments in design and finishes make today's produce easier to use.

All my dealings with Hammonds,from the first phone call to arrange a site visit,the planner,the surveyor and finally the fitter,were a pleasure.The whole experience filled me with confidence and I would use them again without hesitation.Having been in the fitted kitchen trade all my life I was particularly impressed by the fitter who did an excellent job,although I realise not all fitters work is to the same standard.

Hammonds are an excellent company to do business with.

We updated our bedroom in January 2011 and the entire process, from when the designer brought the samples and we chose the design & agreed the price, through the comprehensive survey, to the final fitting ( on our requested date ) all went like clockwork and we are delighted with the end result. The work was carried out to a very high standard and we even received a telephone call a couple of days later to make sure we were satisfied with the completed installation - which we were.

Left hand, right hand...

well there are several departments which do not communicate! We didn't pay the last £300 for our installation as there was a door to be adjusted substantially. While we waited for a Saturday fitting, the collection departement threatened us with court action, despite my ringing to explain. The product itself is very pleasing and looks attractive. The customer service angle was disappointing.
Also, we didn't gain as much space as we hoped, the designer could have made more effort.

Elegeant and built to a high standard

Hammonds have put fitted wardrobes in our old house and in the one we recently moved into. Both times the service and standards were excellent. All staff were polite and very helpful and the fitters were very respectful to our property, very polite and fitted the units to a very high standard.

We would certainly consider using them again should the occasion arise.

good product - couple of things would have made perfect

the product was good - just a couple of things not perfect. one additional shelf in book shelf would have made sense - we didnt think to ask at time of ordering but when it was put up the gap between shelves is very large so another shelf would have made better sense and provided more storage. Couple of things not ideal on the process from drawing to fitting. Our alarm panel was not taken in to account when drawings were done and book shelf had to be moved slightly. after fitting there was scratch on one of the book shelves which we will need to apply wood stain to.there was also slight damage to one of the drawers that was only noticed a few days after fitting.

Excellent choice, salesman was helpful without being pushy.
Staff in Altrincham showroom chatty and helpful.

The fitter was excellent and professional and cleaned up after he had finished.
Have recommended Hammonds to some friends and would not hesitate to recommend again in the future
