I had a good transaction, not great but good. The steps to move along were not always intuitive. I got mixed messages depending on who answered the phone. I received messages that were untrue about my... See more

Autotrader has become SCAMMER central
Autotrader has become SCAMMER central . I got ZERO actual leads from real people. They were ALL scammers. And autotrader basically said there is nothing they can do about it. They would not offer me a refund. I sold my vehicle on Facebook within a day. A guess what, ZERO scammers. Autotrader is a complete waste of time and money.
Of 16 potential buyers all were scammers
Of 16 potential buyers, all were scammers trying to establish contact off platform and also sending me to phishing "Fake VIN Report Scam sites".
The lack of any sort of vetting is just lazy and is indicative of poor cybersecurity practices overall.
All in all AutoTrader has been a waste of time and money.
I was selling a 2018 Leaf
I was selling a 2018 Leaf. In the end, Autotrader got the job done - I sold the car at a fair price. It took about 3 weeks to get a solid buyer, but then the sale went quickly and easily.
Autotrader provided good advice and examples for writing the ad. I had researched pricing on KBB and Edmunds. Autotrader recommended a price above those. In the end, I set the price between KBB/Edmunds and Autotrader, then the buyer bargained the price down a bit and we ended up near KBB/Edmunds.
Spam and low-ball offers - In the first few weeks, I was getting 1-2 spam or low-ball offers a day. All were trying to get my phone #/email and to move the conversation off Autotrader. Some claimed they were ready to buy, full price, sight-unseen. Autotrader should just filter these out.
Autotrader low-ball offers - about once a week, Autotrader itself made a low-ball offer at less than 1/2 what I was asking. Very annoying.
Finally, an interested buyer wanted a test drive. The app offered constructive advice on how to arrange this. It went well. They wanted to buy, so made an offer through the app. I accepted it. They paid through the app. Autotrader verified they had the money. I delivered the car to the buyer. The payment arrived in my bank account 1 day later. I got a FedEx with a return envelope to return the title and associated docs to Autotrader on the day the money arrived. It cost a bit, but I was very happy with the escrow service.
The mechanics of this are that you sell your car to Autotrader as an intermediary and then they sell it to the buyer. I did not understand this until late in the process, but it worked fine and was no extra cost or effort for me.
This was a dreadful experience
This was a dreadful experience. Upon posting my car for sale I received eight contacts - seven of which were thieves/scammers trying either to get me to buy a car report service, use their "secure payment transfer system", or conduct business outside of Autotrader. This site should require people to register and should require identification. In addition, it might even be valuable to require a small fee to use this site. That would make it unprofitable for scammers to stalk sellers on this site. It is frustrating to know that there exists trolls that spend all day doing nothing but pretending to have interest in a vehicle with the sole purpose of scamming individuals.
Auto Trader is full of scammers …
Auto Trader is full of scammers trying to get you to click links and give your personal info out. I do not recommend it at all. It is wild to me that Facebook Marketplace was safer and better and I sold my car to an actual person easily. Auto Trader is not worth paying for and is a joke.

1st time using Autotrader to sell a vehicle. The website worked quickly when uploading pictures and documents. Decent website layout...things I couldn't find answers to were answered quickly by calling in to Customer Service who were always friendly and helpful.
I was careful about only replying to Verified Users, using the Chat feature for communicating, and not replying to people who only sent sent phone numbers/email address.
I liked the fact that funds were verified and transferred securely.
I listed my C8 Corvette on there about…
I listed my C8 Corvette on there about a week ago. I didn't know to be a private seller you had to give them DNA to sell the car. I jumped thru all the hoops, so far I have had approximately 10 fake buyers and 1 real low ball offer from a dealer. I used them several times in the past years before they got bought out and they started charging a percentage to sell. Most all my inquiries were real. I always sold. I thought now the buyer was vetted to, but must not be by the looks of all the scammers. I paid the upfront 49$ so I am going to let it play out and see if it sells. At least most people say if you get a real buyer that process is smooth.
the overall experience was ok
the overall experience was ok, both myself and the buyer ended up contacting a service rep to help us navigate thru the purchase process and she was very well versed and profession .She did a great got in walking me thru the process. my only concern at this point is it's now 4 days since the sale was completed ( purchased on a Saturday) and I still have not gotten a notification that my check has been processed and released for delivery, ( I do not have on line banking, therefore I chose to have a check sent to me... the service agent assured me that the check would go out on Monday, which was 1st business day, and it's now Tuesday ,still nothing ... the title paperwork was sent out yesterday and tracking number provided, but as the saying goes" show me the money", I'm old school, loved pretty much the entire experience, just wish my check was on the way already.
Easy and safe.
It provides an easy and safe way to sell a car. Both the seller and the buyer are protected.
The only criticism I would make Is The letter that came with the document package Should coordinate the Delivery date and return Of the documents. The letter indicated that I should return the documents before The car was actually picked up. He also said that there would be a penalty if I had not returned it by a certain date. I was pretty sure That I should not sign the title until the car was accepted by the buyer, but I called anyway to clarify.
Using the verified seller/buyer…
Using the verified seller/buyer provides some relief for both parties. Using Auto Trader for the transfer of money provides relief for both the buyer and their bank.
This appears to be the most secure way…
This appears to be the most secure way to sell a car, privately. Stay within their ecosystem, as Autotrader recommends. Do not connect with people directly through text/messaging on your phone, even/especially if they request it, and do not buy anything, like an auto survey/evaluation, requested by a potential buyer. Those are likely attempts to scam. I experienced many of those and just rejected those potential "buyers." Also ensure the buyer is verified through Autotrader before proceeding. I will certainly use Autotrader again! Very efficient and resulted in a sale to an excellent buyer at a reasonable price.
It was easy to buy the car
It was easy to buy the car , first time using Autotrader and it was a good experience. Autotrader was always available to help me through the purchased
Seller's experience
Once the transaction was funded customer service called and answered all of my questions. I met with the buyer and this transaction could have not been easier. The way AutoTrader accepted the final payment and handled all of the paperwork could have not made me feel safer and better and ease.
Great app
First time selling a vehicle in a very long time this app made everything very easy.
Made it really easy to sell my car
Made it really easy to sell my car - especially the finance payoff and title transfer process.
Excellent service and platform
The platform worked very well and your representatives on the phone are wonderful.
Customer service is truly excellent!
In today’s environment, especially with AI now, it hard to even get to a person.
Thank you and give your workers a raise 😊
Not an easy process
Getting loads of enquiries, however selling on Autotrader now seems to be just like trying to sell something on Facebook marketplace. You get loads of messages but the vast majority are time wasters. The most annoying aspect is paying for my car to be listed on Autotrader indefinitely until I sell it, then after several weeks I get an automated message from them asking if I would like to extend my ad for “ Free” As if they are doing me a favour. How can it be for free when I opted and paid for my ad to be listed indefinitely until such time as I inform Autotrader that my car has sold and is no longer for sale. I then receive a further text saying that they have extended my ad for a further ten weeks. Thanks very much, I’ve already paid for it to be in your site FOREVER!
Outstanding Service & Experience
Great experience! From the easy listening to the secured platform, privacy throughout the complete process. Multiple offers, sold in a week and a half. Money payment handle in a save secure manner and transferred into my account within 24hours. Would use AutoTrader again and highly recommend.
I had an excellent experience selling…
I had an excellent experience selling my Porsche through Autotrader Private Seller Exchange. The process was safe, straightforward, and easy to understand. Autotrader verified the buyer, securely handled the payment, kept me informed throughout the transaction, and promptly released the full amount after the vehicle was delivered. I felt protected during the entire process and would definitely recommend Autotrader to anyone selling a vehicle privately.
