a livable situation

When I came to Server4You, I was an absolute newbie when it came to dedicated server use. Now, I'm a little wiser. But, I still confront two issues. The first is that the spam filtration doesn't work. The second is that customer service failed to resolve a problem I had with it. But, overall, the server is doing what it needs to do - making it a livable situation.

Servers are down and support is found wanting

Servers are down every month and support does not help. We lose 12 hrs/month to convince them what is wrong

Won't take resposibility

I had one late payment, though i had informed them well in advance and they agreed to it. However when the day came for me to make my payment i noticed the payment options were not available (either server down or they just disable them in late payments, why? you would have to ignore common sense to understand). So after emailing them saying payment is ready and receiving no reply my server was shut down the very next day. So i went to their live chat, made the payment only to hear "our sync server is undergoing maintenance and it should be 5-6 hours." This made me a little angry as i am a web developer and have work to do and i need a live environment to properly test (http request times and such). So after waiting the 5-6 hours..... nothing. Thinking something might of went wrong on boot i initialize a restart through their system. Then about an hour later......nothing. At this point im kinda ticked so i email them and get a somewhat fast reply saying i just initiated restart 3 mins ago (um over an hour) and am asked to wait. So because its late i go to bed, wake up and........ nothing. At this point we start an email battle them asking dumb questions that have nothing to do with it and me replying with all they ask, the whole process takes a week before they finally figure out "oh it just needs to be rebooted" (it was already rebooted twice and the MTR showed their router down). So i finally get my server back after a week (not being able to test my code as well) and i proceed to demand a free month due to it being on their end this all happened. They proceed to say that i failed to use the ticket system properly and replied to them late (its MY time not theirs, I AM THE CUSTOMER, that and we are across the world they reply while i sleep and take 2 days sometimes themselves). So in the end i told them I am going to write this review and that they can cancel my services for next month (if they say anything about that or try to charge me there is gonna be hell to pay).

Poor Service and Bad Support !

the attractive prices are not so attractive after all.
you get nothing for your money , you got to do all by urself!
im suggesting all of you who think about dedi servers keep looking and skip server4you , you better pay few more and get decent support instead of paying to them and get nothing !

CRAP EXPERIENCE

This is a record of my experience with Server4You. I took the following config:

ECOSERVER ENTRY X6
HDD 2x 320 GB SATA
RAM 4 GB DDR2-RAM
CPU AMD Athlon 64 X2 3400+, Dual-Core

First, the signup took longer than usual (that was okay)
When it was confirmed, I started loading backups from my live server (that was okay too)

Three weeks down the road and a week before the next bill was up, the "server" developed problems.
I reported the reboot issue on 29 JULY, during which time it took them 24 hours to tell me I had a firewall misconfi
or permission issues which never happened before in the three reboots I had done.
It took them 24 hours to "Fix" the permission problems (which bash hist never recorded any activity on root)
It took them another 5 days to ask me when they could swap the RAM

It started when I was kicked out of ssh and the web server was not responsive.
Decided perhaps a reboot was in order. Perhaps it was a script that was being naughty.
Wrong decision. Reboot through powerpanel took 30 minutes with no joy.
Hardware rebooted took another hour with no joy. Opened a ticket - and it has been downhill all the way

I can't blame tech support. They try their best to deal with the issues that arise. And I know they are working
their asses off. But the organisation as a whole gives me the feeling that they treat
complaining customers like liars. I was patient right up to the point when they told me there was
a misconfig on the server.

Apparently the server kept going in to recovery mode because of a hardware failure (I think)
But they kept insisting on "misconfiguration".

When I asked for a refund, citing these reasons and the e-mail they sent me about "backup RAID being faulty and replaced"
I was told to provide proof because these never happened and that I need to provide evidence of system logs.

This - even though I had logs posted on another ticket for the technical support issues.

And the past two days I've had the server just die on me while I was in shell. I never rebooted. Nor did I order a rebot.
And each time the server would not come back online.

Here're the logs. I leave it to the consumer to decide WTF went wrong.

---- S4Y ----
according to the system, the reboot should be completed by now. Are you still not able to access your server?

---- ME ----
It's been forty minutes. Still inaccessible.

---- ME ----
Fifty minutes -- rebooted at 02:59AM still not accessible now.
Ten more minutes and it's an hour. Hardly the minutes promised for hardware reboots.

---- S4Y ----
I am transferring this issue to the technicians, we will contact you as soon as we receive an answer from them.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or problems. We are happy to assist you.

---- ME ----
I didn't hesitate I called the technical hotline but got no answer.
I know this is an unmanaged server but how am I supposed to manage a server that's down?
I paid for this in advance. Doesn't this require a partial refund under German and EU trade laws?

---- ME ----
Officially over an hour waiting for the reboot here

---- ME ----
Fix this -- the downtime is unacceptable as of now. Would you prefer if I ask someone at
Hengeler Mueller to speak regarding this?

---- S4Y ----
Dear customer,
We have now forwarded the issue to our data center technicians.
We will inform you as soon as we receive further details.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
German:
Sehr geehrter Kunde,
die Informationen zu diesem Problem wurden an unsere Rechenzentrum Techniker weitergeleitet.
Sobald wir dazu neue Informationen erhalten, werden wir Sie benachrichtigen.
Wir danken Ihnen für Ihre Geduld.

---- ME ----
Is Three Hours an acceptable downtime while waiting for you to physically reboot my hardware?

---- S4Y ----
Dear customer,
we have just received a response from our data center technicians.
We are currently reviewing all details and will get back to you shortly.
Thank you for your time.

---- S4Y ----
it seems to be a firewall problem, because the server shows the login and was working fine in recovery mode. Please check the firewall settings in recovery mode.
Nmap scan report for xxx (62.x.x.x)
Host is up (0.015s latency).
rDNS record for 62.x.x.x: xxx.startdedicated.com
Not shown: 999 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
22/tcp open ssh
Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 3.07 seconds
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or problems. We are happy to assist you.

---- ME ----
Four hours ain't that short trUst me. So what was the problem?
Sorry. What IS the problem? A far as I can see server still not online.

---- S4Y ----
the server is up, as you can see from the log in the last reply:
Nmap scan report for xxx (62.x.x.x)
Host is up (0.015s latency).
rDNS record for 62.x.x.x: xxx.startdedicated.com
Not shown: 999 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
22/tcp open ssh
Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 3.07 seconds
The same log is showing that there are "999 closed ports", that means that there is an issue with the firewall. Please check your firewall configuration.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or problems. We are happy to assist you.

---- ME ----
It takes an hour to "review all the details" ? I prefer honesty here. Was there a hardware failure?

---- ME ----
the report we have received from the technicians is the one it has been passed to you. There was no hardware failure.

---- ME ----
My default firewall rules doesn't block ICMP, TCP ports 10000, 21,80, 443 and 3036
These are blocked. Anything blocking it is not my firewall or under my instruction
So who changed it?
Even SSH is blocked, and I normally can root into my own box -- whch I can't now
fix it

---- ME ----
Are you guys bullshitting me?
You say TCP-22 if open. IT'S CLOSED.
(I Ran NMAP to confirm if 22 was open -- all ports closed)

---- S4Y ----
The opened port was the recovery system. You have to start it again to fix your problem.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or problems. We are happy to assist you.

---- ME ----
I NEVER ORDERED ANY RECOVERY
START WHAT AGAIN?

1. Why did you tell me server was up?
2. Why did you tell me later the recovery was running?
3. Why submit all these NMAP scams of my IP then claim it's the recovery system?
4. WHY DID IT TAKE 6 HOURS TO REBOOT?

---- ME ----
1. I reported rebooting took 30 minutes and still not completed at 3 am
2. You said you'd find out from datacentre techs and revert - you took three hours and told me server up and firewall configuration to be checked
3. I explained all ports down - and you tell me the scan was of the recovery system
4. I NEVER ORDERED RECOVERY
5. THE MACHINE STILl HASN'T REBOOTED
6. YOU HAVE ADDED PROBLEMS AND NOT ANSWERED A SINGLE QUESTION I HAD

---- ME ----
WHAT NEXT?
STILL INACCESSIBLE
REBOOTED FOR THIRD TIME:
Server name Server alias Last reboot: Reboot method
xxx Jul 29, 2012 7:38:01 AM
RAN NMAP TO CONFIRM:

Note: Host seems down. If it is really up, but blocking our ping probes, try -PN
Nmap done: 1 IP address (0 hosts up) scanned in 2.63 seconds

---- ME ----
What the fuck is taking you so long to respond?
I have a commercial customer on this fucking server.

I went through my bash history and found no interventions from your support staff.
Found a log for hardware error and that means:
1. It wasn't an issue with the server or my config
2. It is a hardware issue
3. I expect a report from your technical team regarding this

"we read no, no, no in error message, so it is okay"
Are you guys nuts? It just means there was a parity error in the memory modules but the system recovered from it. Either the processor's running into issues or the RAM's malfunctioning.
Parity errors are not normal in any circumstance and indicate a serious developing situation.
With dmesg popping the error every couple of seconds it disrupts even my work on SSH terminal.
You guys are really making things up and becoming quite a joke!
Fix the hardware issue.

you guys sold me faulty hardware
