I paid for a full year of service and after four months I still cannot use my number. The A2P SMS configuration is extremely complicated and the platform keeps rejecting my setup no matter how many times I follow the instructions. I contacted support multiple times and never received a real solution. At this point, the number I paid for is unusable and the service has been a complete waste of time and money. Very disappointing experience.

UPDATED: 800.com is attempting to block or delay my number port

Update:

800.com responded after my original review and FCC complaint. Matthew from 800.com clarified their port-out process, explained the $100 administrative port-out fee, and offered to proceed with the port-out authorization by email instead of requiring the original signed payment form.

I appreciate that they responded directly and worked to resolve the issue. I have authorized the port-out fee and asked them to proceed with the transfer of my 855 toll-free number to Zoom Phone.

My original concern was around the wording that the port-out request would not be processed until payment was received and cleared, which I felt was confusing and concerning. 800.com has since clarified their position and is working with me to move the port-out forward.

---------------------------------
Original:

800.com is attempting to block or delay porting out my 855 toll-free number unless I pay a port-out fee in advance.

Their required port-out agreement states that the port request “will not be processed until payment is received and cleared.” I disputed this because FCC guidance says companies may charge porting fees, but may not refuse to port a number because the customer has not paid for porting.

When I challenged this, 800.com support responded that 800.com remains the “Customer of Record (owner)” / “Subscriber of Record” for numbers in customer accounts and claimed the number is therefore not subject to the FCC restriction. However, their own Terms Section 3.5 says no party owns a toll-free number, that toll-free numbers are regulated by the FCC, that the number is assigned to my customer account, and that I may request to port the assigned number to another provider at any time.

I have filed an FCC complaint regarding this issue.

I am not disputing that a company may bill an administrative fee. My issue is that 800.com appears to be holding the number hostage by refusing to process the port until payment clears. In my opinion, this is an anti-customer and questionable port-out practice.

I would not recommend using 800.com for a toll-free number if you may ever need to transfer it to another provider.

Service was useless to me

Service was useless to me. Too difficult to get the services purchased up and running. Requires long drawn out while difficult procedures to follow. Not worth the time. Customer service provided no satisfying help. Finally after 6 months of it, I cancelled my account.

Hi there, thank you for sharing your feedback with us and we are sorry you did not have the experience you were looking for. After reviewing all of the support tickets, it looks like the main challenge was getting verified to send SMS messages and using the mobile app for your main source of outgoing communication. I completely understand your frustration and we are actively improving our sms process as well as our mobile app features and capabilities. Thank you for your feedback.

Because of this experience, I'll be using them for my other businesses moving forward.

I signed up for an 800 number, and as a first-time user, I definitely had a few questions and ran into a couple of bumps along the way. That said, the platform was easy to use, and the customer service was outstanding.

Christina was absolutely amazing. She was patient, knowledgeable, and just felt like a real person who genuinely wanted to help. In my opinion, she represents everything a customer service team should be.

Because of this experience, I'll be using them for my other businesses moving forward.

Thank you Christina, and thank you 800.com!

Their website advertises BUYING a toll-free number

I signed up with 800.com after their website clearly presented toll-free numbers as something you purchase and own. The marketing language and overall presentation gave no indication that I was entering a service agreement in which the number would remain under 800.com's control, or that moving the number to another provider would require paying them an additional fee.

After acquiring my number and attempting to port it to my preferred phone system provider, I received an unsolicited phone call from 800.com. The representative told me explicitly that the number is THEIR PROPERTY, that I could not port it away without maintaining a paid service with them, and that if I wanted to transfer it, I would need to pay them $341 to "purchase" it — a number I had already paid to acquire through their platform.
This is deceptive and, in my opinion, potentially illegal. FCC regulations prohibit carriers from blocking or delaying legitimate port requests. The fact that 800.com retains RespOrg (Responsible Organization) control over numbers and uses that control to demand additional payment before releasing them is a practice that is not disclosed clearly or prominently during the purchase process.
I have filed complaints with the FCC and the FTC. I am also pursuing a complaint with the Massachusetts Attorney General under Chapter 93A, which covers unfair and deceptive business practices.

If you are a small business owner considering 800.com for a toll-free number, be warned: you may not be buying what you think you are buying. Read their terms of service very carefully before paying anything, and understand that porting your number away could cost you hundreds of dollars they never told you about upfront.

After reading their reply I stand by my review. The website is substantially misleading and no amount of "citing the fine print" overcomes that.

Hi Jim, I spoke with support and completely understand your frustration with porting out the number. Purchasing a service with 800.com comes with a phone number while using the service. In some cases, this involves us paying for the phone number upfront, which we do not charge for while you have our service.

We do share this information in our Terms and services

In cases where you want to simply transfer the number to your other service provider, and not have the 800.com service, we give the option to transfer the number.

You are correct, depending on the number there is a cost to transfer the number and update the caller of record. After receiving your permission over the phone as well as the signed document, we went through with that process and released the number to your new provider immediately.

We certainly apologize for any confusion with the plan purchase. I will look into our user experience and see how we can be more clear about this in the future. We wish you the best of luck in your business.

Potential new clients, please stay away from them
