People who are giving them bad reviews seem like they are demanding money back because they didn't read the full terms of the website. I was honestly afraid to rent from BookRenter after reading these reviews but I took a chance and my process went GREAT! Saved me so much money on my two books and returning them was very easy, just packed them carefully back in the original box and dropped at UPS store. They pay for the shipping and give you the label and they even let you choose where you want to return it! What is so hard about that? I didn't have any damage charges or anything but I was also very gentle with my books. I HIGHLY recommend contacting customer service when your books arrive and they are not in perfect condition. Customer service can tell you what info they already have for the book and the state it's in. As long as you don't add to the previous damage that they have recorded you will have no problems. Thank you BookRenter! Will use again.
They rent books that are ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS without a CD & that they didn't have a CD to send me. There would be no refund of my costs as I had not returned the book in time to receive this; well my class didn't even use the book until later in the semester, so I didn't know it was a problem to not have the CD. I did ask them if they would be removing this book from their website & was told NO THEY WOULD NOT REMOVE IT!!!! GO TO AMAZON!!!
My book was lost during shipping. A week later I was finally refunded my money. Three days after I received my refund they magically found the book and sent it to me. They debited the full amount from my card including the over night shipping that I initially paid for the first time. I called and requested the shipping costs back since it had taken so long to get my book. A customer service representative stated this was happen and I should receive my refund in 7-10 days. That was Sept 28 and I still to this day (11-17-13) have not received it. I've called customer service to figure it out and they blame it on my bank. I've called my bank and it has no record of a credit from them other than the initial one when my book was lost.
I needed to cancel my order and even though my order had not shipped yet, customer service refused to stop the order and even hung up on me on the phone. Highly unprofessional and not helpful at all if anything goes wrong on their end.
I have used this company while going to school online. I will NEVER use them again. I have a book that I did initially as a rental. At the time, I had a family emergency and a sudden unexpected move to an entire new city. They have my credit card information and my rental has been extended about 3 times now for a few days - never denied or not paid. They have made more money on me through extended rentals than if I had just initially purchased - they should be happy. Today, I get a threatening and rude automated call, threatening to send me to a credit bureau. For WHAT???? They have been paid I am still renting - they haven't lost any money What is their issue? I will NEVER utilize them again. I will pay more money to someone else before I utilize them. If I want to rent the book forever, it is none of their business. There is nothing that says there is a limit on rental periods. I can't believe their audacity!
The customer service is horrible. The 2- day shipping is really 4 to 5 day shipping. The book arrived in horrible condition.
If I could give NO STARS that would be my choice.
There are comments by myself it says no comments but I have commented twice since this review..so please do click "comments"
They not only had the edition I needed, for less than a third the average cost to rent it used, but I got free shipping and turned out to receive the hardcover actual-book edition! (The rest of the class has to cope with a dumb loose-leaf version that is supposed to go in a binder, ha!) I would not hesitate to point anyone seeking low-cost textbooks in the direction of Bookrenter.com!
I paid for expedited shipping and expected to get my books in a few days, like I paid for. I got two out of three two weeks later after having to call customer service. I will never rent from book renter again and I will tell all my friends to steer clear from the company and I will never rent from the company again. All I got was a "sorry" and my books two weeks later. The lateness caused me to get the books less than a week before my test and caused me to waste the money I paid for expedited shipping.
I got an email that said my book was delivered but when I checked in my apartment complex's office, it was nowhere to be found. I then called Bookrenter's customer service and they said that the status was "undeliverable" which is very strange since I have received textbooks and other products at this address before. The representative I spoke with said that as soon as Bookrenter receives my book back, they would automatically refund me. I got an email about a month after the date that I ordered it saying that my book has been returned. I still had not gotten refunded for my money back so I called customer service again. The representative refunded my money back, but upon checking my email, it was not for the full amount!! The cost of my book for a 125 day rental was $32.30 and after tax the total was $34.69. They had only refunded me for $28.33 and it said "Please note that your original shipping cost was not refunded, since the return was not due to our error" in the email. It was not my error that I did not receive the book so I believe that I should get the full amount. And I am currently waiting for a call back. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!!!
I will never order from bookrenter again nor will I ever recommend them to anyone again. When there is a problem they are worthless and will not do anything about it, but pawn you off on to someone else. The customer service is definitely the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. Also, their refund policy is a scam because once the order has been placed they actually do not offer refunds, I have found out the hard way and am now out a good chunk of money. Thanks for basically stealing money from an already broke college student!
so for accidently ordering the wrong book which i returned the second i received it. yeah they make "refund process" so easy. once they receive that book back can look as good as new still, because you didn't even touched the book. you will only receive half the money back. Im guessing this is some kind of trick from them cause no where in the site does it say you will get a portion back. NEVER will i rent from here again obviously they dont have good customer service.

I paid an extra $25.00 to have my order shipped within two days and that didn't happen. I called to ask about my order and the one customer rep hung up on me. I asked to speak to a manager and he said I could not. I then asked why and he said no one was available. He asked if there was anything else he go do I said yes let me speak to someone else he then said ok thank you for calling and hung up on me!! When I called back another lady said no I could speak to a manager or someone in charge because "no one was available". She said she would have a manager call me back and of course I didn't hear from anyone. I will not ever rent from this company again. If someone had called to try and make it right I probably would, but ignoring customers or hanging up on them is not good business.

I discovered that the Conceptual Physics Plus MasteringPhysics with eText -- Access Card Package I ordered did not come with eText or an access card. I'm disappointed, but apparently those supplements aren't guaranteed. Everything else was great: cheap prices and timely delivery. The customer service is also great. I totally recommend using BookRenter.
Book rental for my 1st quarter was a breeze. Renting for my 2nd quarter has been the worst experience. I'll never use this service again. I ordered my 3 books for fall quarter very early and was pleased with the availability and cost but I then received an email saying that I had received my books and I hadn't. I sent two emails which went unanswered. Then I was offered a refund or replacement - I chose replacement as I'll still need books. Then I received another email offering a refund or replacement, again I said, I'd already asked for the replacement. I then sent a message with all of the relative correspondence attached stating how frustrated I was and received a response to say I would be receiving a refund for one of the books. I now have two books and some money back and no apology. Oh, I literally got married and watched my sweet grandmother die in the last week and this book BS was a rude distraction to be fretting over when money and time were tight. Garbage!
I will be using this site for the rest of my college years , fast, friendly, inexpensive, easy to navigate web site, great, amazing return policy
My books weren't just cheap, they were in amazing conditions and they came in a lot quicker than I expected specially since I took advantage of the free-shipping option and my books were here in less than 5 days. I'm extremely content with my books and I have definitely recommended to my friends and I will definitely be back for my books the rest of my college career.
I ordered two books from this company and payed for express shipping. I received an email stating both books had been shipped and were on their way. When in all actuality only one of my books were shipped. I never received a second email saying that there was a second shipment. When I called to ask about this I was told that the books can come from different shipping facilities and that the processing of each facility can be different (information that is not disclosed when I ordered). So after paying for express shipping I only received on of my books when it was expected and had to wait four more days for my other book. Also when I called customer service they provided me with the wrong tracking number and I had to call back to get the right one. Very, Very, Very disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After I return my books I will no longer order from this company!!!!!!
I havent received my books yet but I did just order them maybe an hour ago and after reading the reviews I am definitely nervous! Some of you had really good experiences and some had horrible experiences which is keeping me on my toes. I also payed for the 2 day shipping because I need the 3 books I ordered asap since I have assignments to do. But as I was reading many reviews I noticed that about 3/4 reviews came from the fact that there was "water damage". If that happens to me, I will DEFINITELY know that this website is a scam and I will be very upset. Due to the fact that my father is a return manager for his company, if I hear from book renter that there was water damage then there will definitely be a problem. I spent quite a lot of money for these books and I hope that everything works out! If it does or does not you will definitely hear from me.
I orderred "The Art of Public Speaking with Connect Access Card" vs "The Art of Public Speaking". The book I orderred cost more but the access card was needed for online help and reqiuired for the class. The purchase of the book "...with Connect Access Card" was acknowleged and the shipment of the book "...with Connect Access Card"
was aknowleged. I received the "Art of Public Speaking" but no Connect Access Card.
I called customer service to report the shipping error. They told me the Access Caed was supplemental material and the company policy is that supplemental material is not guaranteed to be shipped. Also, the book I received is in pretty rough condition...it will be interesting to see if they charge me extra for missuse upon return.
This is my first time using any book rental service. I ordered 9780321749802 (a college physics book with access code). When I received the book I saw that I hadn't received the access code. The lady started by saying that in their service agreement it says that you may or may not receive the access code- it's luck of the draw. But she would give me a refund based on me receiving the same book without the access code 9780321733177. So I took it, and hung up. After hanging up I looked closer at the book and realized I had different book entirely! The book I had been sent was a paper back, volume 1- which only included the first 16 chapters 9780321766243. This actually would work for my class, except I had paid for an $80 book and was refunded only $13 because in their system it said I had received a $67 book. But in reality I had been given a $22 book- so I should receive a $58 refund. Confused?- so was the lady when I called back to get it fixed. After 45 minutes, most of the time on hold, they were able to refund me the correct amount. But they aren't going to change my shipping label. The customer service rep told me that she will notate on my account what has been done and that I have a different book, but it won't change in the system that I was given this book instead of the one I ordered. This worries me mainly because I don't want to be penalized for returning the book I received, because in their system it says I have a different book. And in all reality, the differences between the books are very slight in appearance and my class only is tested on the the first 16 chapters. I might have never known that I was given a book with such a huge price difference if it wasn't necessary for me to have the access code.
I'll update my review once I return the book in December and see how that goes. But I probably won't be renting from them again- I'd rather pay a little more and be assured that I get what I ordered and paid for.
Remove the option for expedited shipping. I paid an additional 50.00 to have my book delivered early and bookrenter did not honor their word. The books were delivered late. When i spoke to four different customer service people , one of whom hung up on me while I was still talking. The other reps stated that it can take an additional 2 days for processing. I asked them all why give an option to expidite if the company was unable to do it. The books arrived after my class started. The company refused to refund my expedited charge v I will never use this service again. I mentor college students as well, I will spread the word of my aweful experience. Never again !
So BookRenter had the book I need for class for cheaper than anywhere else so I thought why not go with them. I even look at reviews first and I saw both good and bad reviews. Well I should have listened to the bad reviews. I just my book, well not actually my book since they sent me the wrong book! I rented a psychology book and they sent me a business book! I even looked back through my email to see if it was my fault, NOPE it was theirs! I am so pissed off they did this because I need this book like right now and I even paid $9.99 extra for 2 day shipping. Which I will not get a refund for the extra price of shipping. Yes it did get to me in 2 days but it was the wrong book! And it looks like I will have to wait until tomorrow to talk to anyone about it since they do not have a 24 hour customer service. What the hell is that! So my advice is to NOT rent from BookRenter at all!!!! Chegg.com and campusbookrentals.com are the two I am sticking to.
I rented my books through them (and have before) and realized in the hustle and bustle of getting ready for classes I put the wrong address down (ST instead of WAY for goodness sake). They could do NOTHING about it but minutes later. They say once the order is placed there are no changes to be made, you get charged, and you have to wait for the books to cycle through and GOD KNOWS how long it can take for the books to be retrieved let alone even returned. How foolish is this that they cannot manage their process and make changes in minutes following an order. How foolish they cannot go and do an address change through the shipper. GET OVER YOUR NEED FOR PROFIT AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS. Put yourself in their shoes and consider that customer service is considering what they are going through and how you can "succeed" for them. Your customer service line is called your "success" line. Your system is horrible and screws people it isnt success. You be the bigger business and think with the minds of your customers and what they are going through and why they are even here to patronize your business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are in business because we are students. Good businesses think with the minds of their customers first. This is a horrible policy. This is unacceptable no matter what is "written" on your web site. You should put your feet in the shoes of your customers or look absolutely ignorant when you say things like your "success line." DIGUSTING! Its called greed. Dear public, when we pay less for things in this country we are killing the definition of customer service, period. We will find NO SERVICE exists if we keep supporting companies like this. They will continue to learn ways to do this that costs pennies to nothing and we will all feel it. We have to invest in our country and PEOPLE serve it not automated systems that could care less about you and care more about their end dollar to gain. Just because it is "written" doesn't mean you can assume that people are going to adhere to a company policy that is far out of the norm. Your automated system Bookrenter is obviously reducing manpower to increase profit and decrease overhead has got to plain and simply PISSSSS people off eventually in that their credit card has to be withheld funds for weeks dealing with this crap when your just starting college courses and have enough to manage let alone this kind of problem. You ask a lot for your customers under the environment most of us are in as we support ourselves and go to school in modern times. Do you really think a customer ever wants to order books with you again given the inconvenience you risk taking with them with this policy? NO WAY! You loose more I bet down the line in customers lost from this given I have 4 more years of graduate school left ahead of me and I wont give you a penny of my business.
DO NOT ORDER BOOKS FROM THIS PLACE... RESIST THE URGE TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS AND SPEND THE MONEY WHERE YOU ARE RESPECTED.
I began renting text a year ago from book-renter. At first I was afraid it would be a hassle, to mail books back and forth, but honestly it is very cost efficient, and simple! I have had no hassles, and when I've had any questions I can easily find answers on the website. This quarter, I spent $160.00 to rent books that would have cost me $500.00!
They have amazing service. I rent all my books from them, hands down. They keep their prices way lower than any university renting price and their shipping is 100% hassle free. The book arrives within a few days of ordering it and when it's time to send it back you don't even have to pay for shipping. They make textbook buying simple and fast - the way it should be!
This is what I get! I should have stayed with CHEGG. I only rented with CHEGG once and wanted to give bookrenter a chance since their prices seemed to be better, yeah right! I put in an order for 3 books in, paid $280, than get an email 1.5sec later telling me they didn't have the most expensive one. That's cool, even though I shouldn't have been able to rent the book, but they still took my money and it was not posted back. I need that D@*% money to get that book from some where else!! NOW not in 2 weeks! And now that number they have isn't even working on my end. This pass weekend I got the voice recording, as well as Monday morning before 8am. Now.... a busy tone. I will NEVER rent from here again. I had NO, NONE, NOT ANY PROBLEM from CHEGG, now I'm really paying the price. In hindsight, I would pay the few dollars more to have no problems than what i'm going through now. So pist!!
I wish I had known about this site the whole time I was in school. This i was the best idea ever. The books came before the due date and they where in good shape. I can't wait for my next seminster so I can use Book Renter again.
Rented two books, turns out the price that i rented the first one for was the same as actually buying the book, still had to return it. It arrived two weeks late (which they later did give me a 15 dollar off coupon for that, but it has no value now, because i will NEVER use bookrenter again). During that two week period i called multiple times trying to talk to an actual agent to track down my book, never got ahold of one, ever. In addition, a few weeks ago, I was under the impression because i paid the same price for this "rental" book as it was new, and confirmed by an email, that i would be able to keep the book and not return it. It wasn't until a DEBT COLLECTOR started calling me that began the horrid process of returning a bookrenter book. Just save yourself some time and trouble and don't rent at BookRenter.
I rent from bookrenter.com because they have great prices. But I rented a textbook this semester and I was late returning the book due to class I must admit but I just received a email stating that I was charged 175.02 due to major water damage throughout the book.. I do feel as though it is a scam because bookrenter sent me the book with writing and high lighted sections ( so it was already used as I already knew but still) which I didn't mind because I'm pretty sure they were aware of this right? Well it seems when I send it back to them there's major water damage throughout the book and then I have to pay for the shipping if I want the book.. You charge me $175 and then I have to pay extra for shipping and then there's no way I can see or actually know how the book was "damaged in the first place.... I just told my class Tuesday that bookrenter is my life saver when it comes to saving money on books and then they do this to me smh.
It's sad that I have to go elsewhere to buy or rent books instead from my own campus bookstore but BookRenter usually has the books I need, makes it easy to order, and easy to return for free just by printing the shipping label and dropping it off at the post office or FedEx. Plus, sending an email of when it was shipped, by when should you receive it, if it was scanned at the post office, etc all notices or reminders are very helpful. I used to buy books w/ cash so at the end of semester I could get some money back but they started giving not even half of what you paid for or stating the book was no longer used so they could not buy it back, that's when someone told me about Book Renter and I've used it since then.
I have rented 6 books from here so far and I must say they have saved me hundreds of dollars. They ship fast and provide tracking numbers. Returns are hassle free. I was 2 days late returning my book and they did not charge me. I love that it is 'returned' when it is scanned at UPS, this gives me a little more time to turn it in. (Meaning I can take it to UPS the day the book is due and have no problems) I love that shipping both ways is free, saving me even more money. This is a great company/site and their customer service is prompt and courtesy. I highly recomend them to college students on a budget.
I have been using book-renter for a while because they are cheap, but now I am starting to realize that I get what I pay for with this company. There have been a few occasions where I have purchased orders with "2-day" delivery because I needed them right away, and they NEVER came on time. I wised up and tried to get my books earlier, because I know that it is not worth paying the extra money when it will just come later anyways.
I have always been on time with returning my books, but with the July 4th weekend, it was the last thing on my mind. I got a courtesy reminder 7 days before and 3 days before. To me it would have been more helpful to have one the day before or even the day of, as I am a very busy person (especially with it being the July 4th weekend)! Anyhow, my book was late, and of course they sent a notice THE DAY it was late (July 5th). They proceeded to send me an e-mail on the 7th stating that my book "is at least 5 days overdue" (I don't know what kind of math genius they have working for them, but they should probably read some of those math books they get in) so they extended my rental to 15 more days, charging me $10.52. Now it is Monday the 8th, and I am home and able to work on things, so I decided to call their customer service and try to straighten things out. The lady was nice, but I still feel ripped by the company as she was unable to help me. I told her that the FAQ section on the website says there are "no late fees", but they would make a 15 day extension and charge according to that. So I figured I would let her know that it is only 4 days late now (not more than 5 days according to their e-mail on the 7th) and that I didn't need a 15 day extension. I asked if it would be possible to change it from 15 days to just the actual 4 days that it is late, but she was unable to assist me. This will be the end of our relationship book-renter, as most decent organizations have a grace-period and don't jump all over you with inaccurate e-mails the second you are late. I didn't jump on you the few times you were late sending me my books...... until now! This is the end of our relationship. It is worth it to me to pay slightly more to do business with a better quality organization. Here I come Chegg!
BookRenter's prices are terrible! The only reason I used this service is because it was subsidized by my school. Their prices are not competitive with Amazon at all! Why pay for a rental, when you can own the book for the same price? Then, when the rental period was nearing the end, I had assumed that since the new price was the same as the rental, that they would offer to sell at near $0, but instead they said they would sell it to me for 100% of the new book price! I could have purchased two new books for this price! I have no reason to rent, when I can own, and re-sell it myself if I don't want it anymore.
Book Renters really helped me in a pinch this summer. I was taking a 6 week online class which required a $200 book, one that I was not going to buy. I'm moving to Las Vegas next week so I really didn't have the extra cash to spend, and I happened to stumble upon BR as I was searching for an online version of this book. It was only ten bucks to rent, and I didn't have to pay for shipping either way! The book was in great shape, so I just guarded it with my life the 22 days I used it. Great service, very affordable, legitimate and EASY!
