I never thought to review Burpee seeds before but they sell a wide variety of a quality seeds at affordable prices. You can find them anywhere. And you can count of most of the seed germinating. Want success for your garden? Grow Burpee.
I check out the reviews on Dave's Garden before ordering anything to do with gardening. I have found numerous other seed sources which supply more seed for less money and with better germination. I did buy a gardening hod at Burpee's on line recently. It took two weeks to get here and they are maybe 10 miles away. This company is coasting on its brand name and glory days. Any serious gardener would do better spending their money elsewhere.
I was sent two shipments of canna bulbs. Both shipments had containers of bulbs that were illegible and NONE grew. These were expensive!!! $198.00!! I think they must have been last year's stock. I am very disappointed. I have been growing these bulbs for 30 years and know what I'm doing. I first saw them at the Boston Public Gardens. We actually got some of their stock and had them for many years. I tried to replace them by buying them at Burpee but their stock was poorer than the local roadside vendors and Lowe's.
I had an extremely poor experience with Burpee. While their product is doing well so far, their shipping practices and customer service were laughable bordering on scandalous.
I was charged $15.96 shipping for my order. It arrived in a Jiffy packing envelope marked with a $1.57 USPS first class postage label on it. For those of you bad at math, that is over a 900% mark up.
So of course I sent a nicely worded email questioning this. I was informed that shipping is based on the total order price and helps cover "computer processing time, packaging materials, and shipping charges". I have worked shipping customer orders for years and cannot imagine how inefficient an operation would need to be to justify $14 for an envelope and someone using a computer. And isn't the product supposed to be where a company makes profit?
I sent another email explaining this, and the only response has been, "Thank you your comments and feeback are noted" (Yes, it was spelled in correctly.)
I will never do business with Burpee.com again and urge all readers to do the same. It is a shame that poor business practices ruins what otherwise would have been a wonderful online shopping experience.
