If you need it - they've got it

Been using eBay for about 5 years now, mostly as a buyer. In the last 5 years and over 250 transactions later, I have only ever had one problem. This was resolved very quickly by eBay and they gave me an immediate refund. Anything I need I always look for it on eBay first, usually obtaining a huge saving on high st prices. My tip would be to always use PayPal, as this protects your purchases. If you are looking for a certain item then, on the right hand side of the page, tick the "auction only" box, as this will filter out a lot of the shops and mostly show the ordinary private sellers items. I have had some real bargains from "Auction only" private sellers recently. All these were unwanted gifts.These include:
New Ralph Lauren Polo Black EDT gift set. £23 (high street £60)
New Biorb Life designer fish tank. £150 (high street £280+)
New Amethyst Gold ring. 10g of solid gold £54 (high street £199)
Near New Fender Telecaster electric guitar. £240 (high street (£499)
New Davidoff "Champion" 90mil EDT spray. £19 (high street £42)
New Levi 501 Jeans. £14 (high street £50 - £70)
New 14ct solid Gold Aquamarine ring £24. Gift for her indoors. (yet to be valued but even the scrap value would be 3 times more than I paid)
All the above items were bought for my own use, not to sell on to make a profit, although this is always possible. But if you do this regularly eBay may list you as a business and you may be forced to pay business tax etc. I have also sold a few household items such as a digital camera, a HD camcorder, a few coins and some jewelery. My only criticism is that Ebay sellers fees are a bit on the high side. My tip for private sellers is DO NOT select a "reserve" price. If you do this then you will be charged a fee even if your item does not sell. If you want a minimum price for your item then select your "start price" close to the minimum price that you want. For example, if you want a minimum of £150, then set your starting price at £149. If your item does not sell then you wont be charged a " reserve" fee.
Lets face it, anything you could ever need can be found on this site and a bargain can always be found. It is sometimes also fun to just simply "window shop" or "browse" the various listings and something will always catch your eye. Another tip for buyers is to "browse" the private listings a few days after Christmas, its amazing the amount of brand new unwanted gifts that are listed at a fraction of their high street price.

Great commission rate for not doing much at all! The sooner something else comes along to break their greedy monopoly the better.
Oh and pay your taxes in the UK

Excellent assistance in Purchase from America

The Deal was what we had been searching for, the Seller was excellent with emails keeping us in touch throughout.
eBay assisted both the Seller in America and myself the buyer here in England with a system which enabled me to pay via Paypal with no further problem. The Deal was finalised without delay 10/10 to eBay here and in America

A mixed bag

There are good sides to eBay but there are some bad practices that go on too. eBay profess to support their customers but I have had some unpleasant experiences when selling from unscrupulous buyers who were allowed to get away with it by eBay. All very well doing something for a quiet life but so not fair on honest Joe.
I only buy now and only from UK sellers with good feedback scores.

Find everything you want!

You need to be quite savvy as there's also a lot of crap especially cheap items coming from China. But you can save a lot of money with these guys.

Over rated , too much new foreign junk

Best buy and sell site ever!

Everything about Ebay is brilliant. The whole selling and buying procedure is made simple and quick. I have bought many items and have always been completely satisfied by the professional way in which Ebay works. Its interaction with Paypal is first class. I cannot rate it highly enough. Excellent every time!

I wouldnt be without it. You do have to be careful though as i once bought a phone and six months later it ended up blacklisted. I have sold stuff for a £1 but made some bargains myself.

No protection for sellers

A buyer gave me abuse and left me negative feedback which was a lie. Ebay would do nothing about this as they had not used certain words which entered the Ebay terms for removal. What a joke.

Shopping from Ebay ,BE CAREFUL

i ordered PS3 from ebay in 2008 and i have never received it. i opened dispute through paypal and they didn't do anything. They just wanted me to report seller to police to be able to get refund. i have called paypal 50 times and they covered half of my loss months later but phone bill is not included :) Well since then i didn't buy anything from ebay until this year.Fortunately i didn't have problem with my last orders but i was so nervous even i bought them from ebay's top sellers.

A bit hit and miss

I was doing well with ebay until my user name was locked out. have tried to sort it out many times but now I don't bother.

Ebay just sent my home address to a buyer

I have been an ebayer for 10 years, have 100% feedback. When i sold a computer on there recently the buyer decided that they wanted to send it back. The machine worked and was fine, the buyer even said that they had used it. When i said i didnt want it back an ebay case was opened up and some faceless nameless person at ebay decided that they were empowered to make a decision over whether they were entitled to send it back and for me to give the money back. They then automatically gave my address details to the buyer!! Apparently its in their terms, absolutely no data protection!

Not perfect but hey!

Sometimes there are so many other options shoved into your search for one, that the whole thing becomes boring and overwhelming. However most of the items have been good.

Ebay has everything i ever need and at very reasonable prices. I never have any issues and purchases are just so easy!

Love eBay, until something goes wrong.

As the title mentions; eBay is a beautiful marketplace, love it for both buying and selling, but every so often, depending on your level of use, you're going to come across problems with either the website, or buyers/sellers, at that point, eBay UK customer service team can be some of the biggest idiots going. Hugely disappointed and hope more will come forward with issues they have with CS at eBay.

E baying for years now - good fun and ebay looks after its customers if anything goes wrong.

A terrifice way to recycle unwanted items, buy and sell.

A very good way of cashing in those unwanted items - you must offer accurate descriptions though.

Also a very good way of buying a fantastic range of items - many unusual. Prices are strictly 'market' but there are many bargains if one perseveres.

Still a good resource for hard to find items

I have traded on ebay since it started. At the beginning it was a much better resource where people connected with one another to sell their stuff. It was a great way to sell things that you no longer needed (or wanted) or to find components you could not find locally. Things once sold at garage sales were suddenly available through ebay. The prices were really decent. There was a nice community of folks, too. Still is.

Unfortunately ebay has evolved into a place where prices have gone way up and scalping is not unusual. I have seen items selling for more than MSRP (sometimes double or even triple, depending on how scarce the item is). Usually it is something kids want with parents who do not know the value of teaching delayed gratification. As in waiting until something is available at a reasonable price. When a new video game system is released, demand is usually much higher than supply; and, to some, no price is too high. The same goes for some popular video games.

Some will say this is a good thing. I'm not sure that greed is ever good. When I say greed, I am not strictly speaking about sellers. It is on the part of the buyers who MUST have something no matter how much they pay. That was bound to happen. Ebay is no longer the small community it once was.

It is still a darned good place to find things you cannot find anywhere else. Vinyl albums... older games, movies, etc. That is what made ebay a good thing in the beginning and that has not changed. Just make sure you know your prices. And use PayPal to protect yourself.

Terrible place to buy and sell

The eBay site is not safe. I, as well as many others have been scammed out of money from eBay accounts which have been hacked due to the eBay site not being secure.
EBay customer service has been rated the worst in the world by many review sites and I would completely agree.
I'm never going to buy or sell on their terrible website again.
(Never buy a valuable electronic item on ebay, it is likely to either be a stolen item or a fake scam seller).
All round terrible criminal company.
