Couldn’t be worse I am convinced this compost killed my tomatoes. I am a qualified horticulturist and retired farmer. I planted many tomatoes again this year probably in excess of 20 plants. Those planted in purely Westland peat free grew more slowly and became purple tinted with lead curl.within 30 days of planting pot grown plants. Very few fruits after the initial flowering early in the season. Those I planted with Westland compost and some well rotted horse manure fared better but after a first flush of tomatoes these plants too weakened became yellow with no further flowers developing. I believe this compost contains some residual herbicide. Tomatoes growing wildly on the manure heap adjacent are flourishing. I planted a raised bed with another brand of compost with pumpkins immediately adjacent I planted some pumpkins in Westland compost. The Westland pumpkins plants have barely grown, no flowers and about 6” tall. The pumpkins adjacent planted same time in alternative compost (well known for its miracles) are absolutely huge with multiple pumpkins of about 8”
Diameter, have trailed out of the bed and along the ground probably about 4ft across and about 1.5ft tall. So this is a perfect comparison. I have grown so many tomatoes last year I had to give some away on a table outside my home so I am perfectly competent at growing and the only difference this year is the use of Westland peat free compost has destroyed my harvest this year.

Very poor screening on the 30 late bag of top soil. Lots of stones and twigs in it.

Will never purchase Westland compost again. Recently purchased four bags of Westland Peat Free Compost with added John Innes No.3. Literally full of rubbish (large bits of plastic and other detritus). Poor quality!
Dear Westland, further to your reply asking for further details, I gave you the exact product name in my complaint. I’m not going to supply you with QR codes, pictures, etc, etc! Suggest you take a hard long look at all your Trustpilot 1 star reviews. I’ve now switched to a different brand and I’m very happy with the quality. I guess you get what you pay for!

I bought the DeadFast poison, from B$Q, 8 saches for £7. The company boasts that their poison will kill the mouse in one ingestion. I placed the saches in the right places in my apartment and found that the mouse has taken the bait twice. 3 weeks went by and I suddenly I realised that the loaf of bread has been tempered with by the mouse. Meaning the mouse is still alive and their DeadFast poison is DEADBEAT.
Please folk never buy this at all costs. Waste of money!

I am new to gardening and have a small garden allotment with a greenhouse, a lot of large tubs and pots and 3 small raised beds. Last year (my first year) I started very small and bought relatively cheap compost from my local garden centre. I had moderate success with my veg, so decided to go for much more. This year I thought I'd do it properly with your Westland peat free multi-purpose compost. Overall I have bought over 30 bags of your compost, and also bottles of your multi purpose liquid feed and tomato feed. The compost looks mainly like small pieces of wood and other unrotted waste. When I water it the water just drains through. I didn't feel this was how it should be, but as a novice, I didn't really know any better. None of the following seeds (all commercially bought) germinated in my greenhouse beans, peppers, garlic, onions, leek, courgettes, nasturtiums, french marigolds. The only seeds that germinated were cucumber seeds and sunflowers. I then had to buy plants for beans, courgettes, peppers, tomatoes, leeks, onions and various flowers. None of my plants have grown properly this year. Growth is extremely slow and the leaves are yellow and very unhealthy looking. The water just drains through the compost in all of my tubs and hanging baskets. I have spent hours carefully nurturing, feeding and watering my plants and the veg yields are small in size and almost non existent. Because I'm a newbie, I had thought that I was the problem. I now discover a wealth of complaints from hundreds of users across many UK gardening groups about the terrible quality of your compost. I feel really upset and let down by what I thought was the major leading supplier of compost in this home gardening sector. It has really put me off gardening. I will definitely not buy this compost again. And I think you should apologise to all the gardeners that you have ripped off with this useless product.

Shocking
Appalling quality
Plants don’t grow
Total waste of money buying this

This is a review of the Westland peat free compost. As others have mentioned this year's batch is of very poor quality. This growing season, none of my seedlings have thrived and some even failed to germinate. I wonder if it's lack of nutrients or even residual herbicide? I think it was bought from Tesco.

Id like to give a big shout out and a thank you to Kathy in customer services.
I damaged a part on my Flopro garden hose and asked about the availability of the replacement part.
Kathy organised the replacement and this was posted out to me really promptly.
This really is excellent customer service and I would highly recommend this company.
Many Thanks
Craig

My bottle of Big Tom tomato food is designed to look like its roval Tomorite and the contents list is similar. However the content is a completely different clear transparent liquid with a few sparsely distributed black granular specs. If this is normal there should be a warning on the bottle to shake it and not to expect a homogenous thick liquid.
Without a discription I must assume there is something wrong with the product and I dare not rely on it.

Bought 4 bags of Lawn care feed and weed for my large garden and it’s absolutely crap! All it’s done is made the weeds grown, waste of time and money.

Purchased Gro-Sure Smart Lawn Seed, followed instructions to the letter with very poor results (about 5-10% of seeds actually grew). As the package states Guaranteed to grow I wrote to their customer services, with photo evidence, asking them to honour the guarantee at least three times with no reply.

On 01/06/26 I reviewed Westland's Lawn Patch Fix stating that after 4 weeks of applying it to 3 bare patches not one new blade of grass appeared. The company blamed the retailer and promised me a replacement box which never arrived. I have already reseeded with a different firm's product. The grass is growing!!

I used Westland compost with added John Innes this year, when planting my bedding plants into containers. Even the most hardy of plants have died, lobelia and ivy. Petunia rotted back and developed fungus and many other plants that bloomed profusely last year, died or had leaf burn, when I used this compost. I repotted two houseplants that I’ve had for years and both died.
A terrible product and a mistake to buy it.

I bought two large bags of Westland multipurpose compost with John Inns. I found that half of my seeds failed to germinate and the ones that did germinate struggled to grow. I got much better results when I transferred the seedlings to my ordinary garden soil.
I intend to return the un opened bag of Westland back to the store. I won't be buying Westlands compost until the star rating gets to 4, currently 1.6 stars.

Weed & Feed is a mis description. I used 2 boxes as per the instructions, not a single weed turned brown and they are all thriving.
I contacted Westland who were unhelpful.

Bought a 2kg bag of Gardman Nyjer Seed for birds, put it out in two tube feeders on a stand in the newly laid lawn. Within the last week have discovered thousands of sprouting seeds under the feeders. Tried pulling them out, and got some but there are literally thousands of seeds deep in the grass which is fairly wet with the recent rain. Contacted Westland and reported issue, got a reply asking for batch number etc, which I forwarded. Company says it’s not their fault, seeds aren’t heat treated, and although it says on the pack that some seeds may germinate, there are thousands of them germinating under my bird feeder. I have moved it to the patio, but I’m disgusted at the company response. Beware!
UPDATE: Unfortunately, I can’t add a photo, but it specifically says on the packaging “ although every care has been taken to include only non-germinating ingredients, a trace may be present”. My lawn has thousands of sprouting seeds from the Gardman Nyjer Seeds 2kg pack bought! It’s destroyed!

I have never had so much trouble with my gardening as I have had this year. Bought a few bags of Westland multi purpose compost, and seed compost and everything has been a disaster. I have been gardening for 32 years and this year hardly any seeds are germinating, mushrooms are growing instead, the drainage of the compost is very odd and all i get is brown smelly water at the bottom. The plants I repoted in this compost are simply not thriving. I must have got a bad batch. This has never happend to me in all the years of gardening.

Opened bag of Westland compost dry and full of what appear and smells like mushrooms. Emailed them and they say not possible their fault must be my environment. Never had a problem before!!!! Don't buy it's rubbish

The topsoil supplied was supposed to be screened but was full of invasive canary reef grass. It is incredibly invasive and has ruined my lawn and garden. Don’t touch this stuff

Bought two bags of peat free compost. Had fungi growing in the trays and pots along with seedlings. transplanted some of the seedlings but ones left in their compost did not grow, transplanted ones did.
Telephoned westland who had me sending photos and samples to Northern Ireland. Waste of time. They said that the compost 'performed as expected' and to keep pinching out the fungi as they appeared which seemed never ending. In nearly 40 years of gardening from seed, I think that I have had my worst results ever!
