Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 86 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. People frequently complained that items arrived broken or damaged because of poor packaging methods used during transit. Furthermore, consumers felt frustrated because the online descriptions and photographs often failed to accurately reflect the true condition of the products. Shoppers also strongly disliked the excessive shipping charges and hidden handling fees that drastically inflated their final purchase totals. Though some customers noted these negative experiences, a small group of reviewers were happy with discovering unique items. These buyers mentioned scoring fantastic deals and successfully making a profit from their online purchases over time.

Why is goodwill so expensive now it’s…

Why is goodwill so expensive now it’s crazy I’d rather going to new department stores n buy new which at 65 percent of time it’s cheaper then goodwill. Idc what anyone else says it’s true seriously they are given the stuff n then turn around n sell it for what it cost at 20percent off of what it cost new it’s crazy then if it dont fit cause u cant try it on there 9 times out of 10 you dont take it back to much hassle. Its not because they pay there workers good money cuz they dont but the CEO gets a BIG CHUNK of profits n there so called sister country they deliver ya right not happening like they say they give them there torn tattered n clothes that has been pushed around to different goodwills n maybe a once a year that country will receive something but not what we think its truly sad that the CEO is the true moneymaker here

This place has gone steadily downhill

This place has gone steadily downhill. I used to use it 10 years ago and it was great. Over the past 2 months I got back on and it's been one horrific experience after the next.

Won a very delicate antique, paid dearly. The person who "handled" it in packaging either broke it beforehand (which is what I expect, in response to a polite message I'd sent requesting good packaging, so I think a Karen or Ken took offense because you know, customer service isn't "a thing" when you're untouchable and being paid no matter what you do) or intended for it to break in shipping: this was no accident or Fed Ex mishandling, with the item arriving flopping around in loose packaging and no fragile markings on the box, as I specifically requested, not that I should have to.

Yes, you, Greater Milwaukee Chicago.

Over the past 2 months I have used the shopGoodwill online platform daily, acquiring products for a project I'm wokring on, and have ordered and received items from 47 separate Goodwill locations, in some cases multiple items from the same location.

Statistically I receive 1 out of 4 items broken for no reason other than the item is essentially thrown in the box with a lick and a promise. A Fed Ex driver with the finesse of a surgeon would not have been able to keep the item from breaking.

Because these stores are autonomous, unchecked, unsupervised and Shopgoodwill "senior management" is, in my seasoned experience, a fake position using a copy-paste-response of "I'm so sorry you experienced this but..." I have rapidly and painfully learned which online locations I'll bid with again and which locations treat me like an "enemy" they should penalize with broken antique objects, as though my bidding/winning/payment was a personal attack. Some of these individuals don't know what the definition of the word "customer" or "service" means and think I am paying with Monopoly money, so when I find a location that actually does simply give me what I paid for, I like to let other people know (and leave 5 star reviews), and acknowledge their work, and on the flip side:

Out of the 47 sellers I've used via the Shopgoodwill platform, I have a list of 13 with "WARNING: DON'T USE AGAIN" because they operate with the care/service of a drug cartel/money laundering scheme or minimally they simply don't care and/or the owner can't be a thug on the street but can hiding at the other end of a computer, and out of these 13, I have 5 who top the "We get off on items breaking in the mail" and "You owe us your money and we owe you nothing but heartache" list:
⛔️
Western Northern Connecticut
Houston
Greater Milwaukee & Chicago
San Diego County
Northern Michigan
⛔️

The only reason I've not included "Palmetto" is because in both cases they immediately refunded with the photos I sent.

Now you know. Protect yourself. I will be posting this on as many sites as possible and have written to Fed Ex headquarters letting them know what is really going on because it's not them: it's these Goodwill locations and senior management who allow these locations to keep their licenses and literally steal our money.

Here's to the Goodwill store owners and employees who care. 👍🏻

I attempted two auctions

I attempted two auctions on two different occasions the is past 2 weeks. I was high bidder on one and the only bidder on the other right up to the end of the auction. Verified with the yellow symbol, only 1 bidder, me, and on the shipping page my sign on. Both times the auction did not close on time, never showed another bidder and I lost the items I really wanted. Their system is extremely flawed, inconsistent and maybe someone has figured out how to manipulate it in the stores? People buying cheap and reselling. Not doing it again.

Bargains are getting harder to find.

They have started pricing camera opening bids at or above typical selling prices. Check eBay or Facebook Marketplace prices before bidding. Often you can get a working product for the same amount as an untested item at Goodwill. Shipping is often a week out from bid closing. I have had some good buys, but it is becoming less frequent. Many items have an unusual chemical smell. Shipping costs are often outrageous and with the handling charge, you end up almost doubling the cost.

I absolutely loathe this site

I absolutely loathe this site. First, the prices and shipping you charge for DONATED items should be a criminal act. This is the epitome of corporate greed, that’s why I will NEVER donate to you. Next, your site is the slowest, most lagging site I’ve ever experienced. Take some of that profit and update your 💩

Here are the issues

Here are the issues: 1. Taxing on shipping and handling fees; sleazy. 2. The employees sometimes either steal or "lose" a product(s) you bid on.3. shipping and handling fees are gouging. 4. They allow SNIPING. 5. Questionable insider bidding to raise a price. 6. selling possible counterfeit products (see South Florida Psycho Bunny). It's bad. and this is before we get to the executives taking huge salaries and...

Authentication Suspensious

Hi, i go for those authenticated sneakers Wright where you can checkout the certificate for example my most recent buy was jordan 4 blackcats $420 with box. Well so far out of the 50 or so buys only 11 were truly authentic. It gets better im the guy at the boutique people come see for authentication for the last 20 years this what i do. Emailing they play games with return authorization and calling them turns into calling a bunch of people for the returns. So I don't play they games now i just do the charge backs selling counterfeits is a no no for the payment methods. I always call and get the return and as soon as they receive it I do the charge back so to guarantee the full refund. What goes on $450 - $1500 take your certified items to get looked at.

Goodwill is now an auction. Do not donate.

Pathetic money-grab tactic by multi-billion dollar cooperation posing as a charitable organization. I buy and restore vintage audio equipment, and I no longer even attempt to visit goodwills to source gear. The second they have anything valuable, it's being auctioned off on this stupid site for TOP DOLLAR.

Please, unless it's clothing, do not donate to goodwill. They auction off anything they see as potentially valuable. Lining the exec's pockets. Sad!

FIRST OFF THEY GET THE STUFF FOR FREE…

FIRST OFF THEY GET THE STUFF FOR FREE AND THEY CHARGE MORE THAT THE ITEM WOULD BE NEW. IT IS STUPID. I HAVE BOUGHT MANY ITEMS FROM THEM AND IT IS TRULY HIT OR MISS AND THEY REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT THINGS ARE. I SENT A VERY LONG LETTER TO SHOPGOODWILL CORPORATE OFFICE SAYING HOW THEY COULD MAKE MORE MONEY BY DOING DIFFERENT THINGS BUT NO RESPONSE. THEY DON'T CARE. IT SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON SHIPPING COSTS! OR THE BUNDLE SHIPPING WHICH MANY LOCATION WILL NOT SUPPORT. ALSO YOU PAY A FORTUNE FOR FAST SHIPPING AND IT TAKES THEM UP TO 2 WEEKS TO SHIP. THIS IS NOT FAIR!

$4.99 to put an item in a box? Ridiculous hidden fees.

I use ShopGoodwill all the time, so this isn't based on just one single incident—it happens constantly. To be fair, the base prices can be decent, especially when you filter for the 1-cent shipping items. There are even a few wonderful, kind regional stores out there that write nice remarks and don't charge a single penny for handling.
Unfortunately, the majority of the stores do charge it, and it completely ruins the experience.
How does it cost five dollars just to put a single item in a box? They handle the merchandise significantly more when they are sorting and stocking it in the physical retail stores, and we don't get charged a handling fee at the cash register. Sneaking this fee into the online checkout is completely ridiculous. It’s just a sneaky way to inflate the price under a different name, and the stores doing this need to stop.

Here is proof of ghost bidding

Here is proof of ghost bidding. I made a bid of $150 on an item and at the very last second someone won the item for $150.75! Goodwill only allows $1 to $2 bid increments over a current high bid. Then recently I bid $175 gor an item and I received an email that I was outbid by $176. I bid $200 and was outbid by $201. So I accepted that and moved on. After bidding closed I get an email that I was awarded the item at $174. If someone isnt ghost bidding then the system is totally bugged. I have the emails and screenshots to prove it. I will post them here if I can.

Great deals if you bid correctly.

I honestly love goodwill.com...but it depends on what you're buying. I've purchased 3 times and ALL 3 times I've scored expensive designer items for very cheap! They've all shipped wiithin the 5 days promised and all met expectations for condition. When you bid, figure another $15-$20 for tax, handling, and shipping. If it's still a good deal...then buy it. If not...then don't. Not everything is a bargain so just be smart before you bid!!

The worst online merchant out there

The worst online merchant out there. They overcharge for shipping, and when you send them a message wondering why it's taking longer than a week to even ship the item, you get ZERO response from "customer service". I would never attempt to purchase anything from them ever again.

Overpriced shipping unresponsive employees that make excuses 90% of the time.

Pretty much everything is backward on this site.. I scratch my head on how something you can buy on Ebay with a return if it's damaged or not as described can sell for twice as much with no returns AS IS on this site?
I'm not the only person confused on this like someone is ghost bidding for Goodwill.
The staff 80% is incompetent and as it says "Ask if you have any questions" you will get a response if at all about two days after the auction ends. Shipping is beyond ridiculous and you'll find the weight is way off. You have obviously a Contract with FedEx I sell on Ebay and my shipping cost is far below what Goodwill charges. You should have a huge discount, so this tells me you're gouging.
I was going to bid on two 128GB SD cards the shipping weight was 5 pounds $20.00 shipping. The reply "We base it on the size of the box". 85% of the photos of Camera lenses and Binoculars are useless Garbage or taken six feet away. This site has been around for years yet the lack of professionalism on items you can't touch with no returns is unexceptionable. The #1 excuse is "Well it's in our Warehouse we can't get to it". The Store in Portland Oregon is nothing but poor attitude and don't seem to care if the sell anything. Columbia Willamette shipping is way overpriced.
Now On a good note I have had some very but few professional pro active response within a day from employees who do cars and I make it a point to let them know that they are a rare exception. They do know how to waste packing material I've never received a broken item yet. Goodwill get your act together I just waited 10 days to see a tracking number If I missed the 7 day payment period rest assured they would be wanting it NOW and threaten a flag on me.

shipping is slow

I got some good stuff - but the cost of shipping usually makes the price double - they use fed ex - but when they use the ONE cent shipping, they send by USPS which we all know is a broken system - next when I call a shop out, for taking a week to get something in the mail - they make the same lame excuses - someone was sick blah blah blah - hey - with the money they are making on donated stuff they could maybe hire another person - anyway they don't like it and then you go on a list - and they reject your bids - which is fun because they are beating themselves out of money instead of heeding the feedback and it does not cause me to cry to not be able to order from them. It just reminds me of how bad their service was the first time - okay so the last straw was for me, was them sending something but not showing it on my email - why do they have my email if they are not going to use it - oversight - anyway I canceled my account - no more online goodwill - there are two big ones right here in the city - hit or miss - you find treasure on you don't. But my point was goodwill could have done well with this venture and stolen a lot of ebay money since people are burning out with ebay too - but the goodwill is not really planning it well or paying attention as a unit in the shipping departments and you just get burned out dealing with lame service - the money is getting tighter - and a lot of the stuff I was buying I was just donating to charity here - for dogs and cats and the zoo - not goodwill - lol - so it was like hobby deal - but for the money spent I can just go to walmart and buy socks and underwear and donate that stuff - people buy it if its still in new wrapper. Anyway as far as I can tell Goodwill lost out already - and it will only go downhill - some of the places charge way to much - backload with high delivery charge and its not costing them that much - so where is that extra coin going?

Getting a refund is like pulling teeth!

"Won" a set of ceramic kitchen canisters. The largest one arrived smashed and in pieces due to inadequate packing. Contacted shopgoodwill for a refund and discovered that their returns system seems specifically designed to wear down and frustrate buyers seeking a refund. First, they require multiple photos. No big deal, so does eBay and many other sites, right? However SGW has size restrictions, so you have to resize every photo before you can send it. Once you've resized them, you discover that their system is set up so only ONE photo can be sent (if you try to send two, the second photo simply replaces the first), yet they require multiple photos (damaged items, packing slip, shipping container, etc). To send the additional photos (required), you have to send them additional separate messages, each with a photo attached, each, again, resized. To facilitate this action, SGW has to close your case (!) each time; which they only re-open when they get the additional required photos. (Yes, their default is to close your case after each reply, rather than to keep it open till a resolution is reached!) I complained about how frustrating and time-consuming this process was, and they apologized for my having a hard time navigating their system, as if they weren't the ones making it difficult. I've been going back and forth with them for several days and am still awaiting a resolution. Certainly, I will not be bidding on anything fragile from SGW in the future.

Donate an item that I…

I was going to donate an item that I won If i could get refunded the shipping and handling charges. The employee wrote back stating the do not refunds. I had to restate that I was nor asking for a refund I was donating the item i just wanted a reimbursement of the shipping and handling charge, I received another email stating the shipping charges were reimbursed. They stated they do not refund handling charges. I guess this is a way the Goodwill Tennessee steals money. I am still arguing the person on the other end.
