I registered my domain through SmugmugDomains to use in Smugmug, but it would not allow me to use the domain for 60 days.

I had pay Smugmug for 10 years.
At the begining, was cool, but they keep increasing the price, so much, that I had to cancelled.
I clearly remember completing a cancellation survey in which I explained why I was ending my membership and the reasons for my decision.

At the time, I was informed that I would still be able to access my page for the remainder of my subscription period in order to download my information and the photos I had stored there. I did so, and I understood that my subscription had been cancelled.

I was therefore very surprised to wake up and find that I have been charged $166.

They are THE most pathetic excuse for a business. I can't log in and they say they don't have an account but I have a website. There is no person to talk to. They take forever to get back to you in an email and there is no customer service, period.

For 12 years, I hosted my photography business domain (----.com) with SmugMug, believing their platform was helping me grow. Instead, I recently discovered a deceptive technical loophole in their system architecture that actively suppressed my local search rankings, destroyed my SEO, and used my paying clients to generate free brand exposure for SmugMug.
1. The Masking & Fallback Loophole (Passive Corporate Advertising)
While SmugMug claims to support fully integrated custom domains, their system uses an archaic and deeply flawed architectural fallback. If a domain integration isn't perfectly mirrored in both the registrar and their hidden backend menus, the platform doesn't alert the user or block the connection. Instead, it allows the homepage to load under the custom domain but silently drops all internal gallery and service links back to a ://smugmug.com directory.
For over a decade, my clients were ripped out of my brand identity and forced to look at SmugMug’s name in the browser address bar. SmugMug treated my premium, paid portfolios as free advertising billboards to capture new SaaS customers for themselves, rather than protecting my business footprint.
2. Total Devastation of Domain Authority (SEO Suicide)
By forcing deep-linked content back onto smugmug.com, the platform systematically split my domain authority in half.
Duplicate Content Penalties: Google’s search spiders crawled identical photography portfolios on two distinct web addresses, triggering duplicate content filters that suppressed my local visibility.
Stolen Backlinks: When clients shared direct gallery links via word-of-mouth or social media, they were passing around smugmug.com URLs. SmugMug soaked up all the organic ranking power and digital equity that I was actively paying to build.
3. Appalling, Evasive Support
When I explicitly questioned their support staff ("Support Heroes") about this URL mismatch, they either played dumb, lacked the core technical engineering knowledge to diagnose a basic CNAME/A-record mapping discrepancy, or intentionally stonewalled to keep the free branding loop alive.
Verdict: Manipulated and Exploited
I feel completely cheated, manipulated, and overcharged. SmugMug relies on the fact that most creative professionals are not network engineers or advanced web designers. They exploit this technical gap to run a passive marketing loop on the backs of small businesses.
I have officially pulled my business from SmugMug and migrated to Canva using legitimate, hard-mapped cloud routing (A and TXT records). My internal page links are now fully secure, unified, and ranking.
If you are a photographer wondering why your website isn't performing locally despite years of uploading content, check your internal browser bars. SmugMug is likely riding on your coattails while charging you for the privilege. Avoid this platform if you value your independent digital equity.

They increased prices with only 10 days’ notice. Moving an entire archive takes time, planning, and cannot be done overnight. Unilaterally changing contract terms is an unfair practice and goes against consumer protection under European regulations. This kind of behavior shows a complete lack of respect for customers. I strongly do not recommend this company reliability is proven especially in situations like this.

I ordered magnets with photos on them and they are the biggest pieces of junk I've received in a long time. The colors are muted, they are dull and lifeless, the edges show a white line, and they came scratched on the image surface. I know the artist and they made $2 from a nearly $40 order. Not worth any of it.

The app is okay. But I have one huge issue with this company. In the last few years, the cost of the service has tripled. They recently hit my credit card with their huge yearly fee. I immediately canceled my service, only to find they would not issue any refund.

That one thing has cost them a client for life. Anywhere I can, I will leave this honest review.

These site-killers bought Flickr when it was free for everyone. Now the platform’s code is broken and they ban users who won’t pay. That behavior won’t last — many people are building new, fully free alternatives. The company appears driven solely by profit: customer service is poor and the codebase is in bad shape.

Their customer service "heroes" (that's what they call them) never respond to my several emails or tickets that I have raised. Unfortunately I had just subscribed to discover that I can't transfer my Flikr photos to SmugMug, although it is supposed to be simple. Their lack of response is just awful.

I have had Smugmug for about 5 years now, and I have wanted to complain so many times. The main reasons for this is the unfulfilled promises the company makes, especially with SEO. There is absolutely NO SEO used at Smugmug, and they make little or no effort to promote photography websites subscribed to their service. Number 2 is the e-commerce side of their service is also absolutely useless. That is if you are willing to make literally pennies for your published work. In general, Smugmug has been cleverly running on greed and lack of quality they state they have. Again, in general, even though I am a successful workshop leader; the Smugmug platform has added absolutely nothing to my product.

SmugMug offers a "Free" trial period but it is NOT really free. Their "Free" service is nothing more than dishonest.

My son sold some pictures to his friends, total amount of sales $39 approx. during the "free trial period" offered by SmugMug

However, if I want to withdraw the money, one MUST sign up, even if the money was only earned during the Free Trial period. There is nothing free in the trial period, basically they let you use it for free but if you want to withdraw the funds, you MUST sign up for a plan.
Their plans are expensive, more than the value my son earned taking pictures. Nothing free. Dishonest advertising.

An update. a long standarding argument with smugmug has finally come to this. The website sitemap doesn't work. You have 0 control over that as thats controlled by smugmug. So this is their email to me.

I'm not sure what reason we would have to lie about this. We've been very clear with you from the beginning.

In fact, we've been transparent about the sitemap issue you're experiencing.

Our engineers suggest that you contact Google and ask them why they don't want to add your valid sitemap to your SmugMug search console. You can do this by posting your request on Google's community forum:

Sm are expert in blaming everyone but themselves and here's the funny bit, they tell me to ask google why its not working, where I am unable to do anything as sm control the sitemap. That should be sm doing that, not its user!

Now for Googles reply and i have sent this to sm and await their BS.

You have added the compressed file of your base sitemap with .gz extension.

I recommend you to add sitemaps.

A single sitemap size limit is up to 50MB (uncompressed) or 50,000 URLs. You can check more info here.

Also submit secondary sitemap that is /sitemap-base.xml in your GSC.

Just to let you know, nothing works. SM hopeless i am trying to get refund from them. I have never spoken to brainwash company workers like this before.

It's clunky. Sharing links to galleries is cryptic and near impossible. No live chat or support even with paid account. Maybe a small step up from Dropbox for viewing photos.

Smugmug steals 15% of all digital sales ontop of the monthly fee. You get frequent connection errors when uploading images. Customer service equals ZERO. We are now moving on to use another company.

Very disappointing.

The photo arrives with some form of cheap, textured, plastic stuck over the photo (so can't remove it).

The plastic acts as the 'glass' in the frame, but the textured finish blurs the photo and makes it look out of focus.

The frame itself is very cheap and poor quality.

I would avoid using this company at all costs.

Extremely cumbersome site to navigate. Absolutely no SEO presence, and no willingness to rectify the issue. Nagware, as for whatever you do at the site, you have to click away at least three ‘helpful’ tips. Every time. Giant year-over-year price hikes. No real development, most issues from five years ago is the same today. It is one of the prettiest alternatives, though, as Photoshelter and Zenfolio design looks comparatively outdated.

Smugmug are a company that seem to specialise in going backwards, as in the website used to be better and easier to use than it is today. Now its terrible.

The management suffer from tinkeritus, and they've turned Smugmug into an infuriatingly ill-logical, cumbersome and barrier laded assault course through which anyone seeking to make even the most basic of changes has to wade, wasting untold hours of their life.

Take the simple matter of SHARING a gallery with friends. It should be simple. With Smugmug its a kafkaesque nightmare. A newly formed gallery gets appointed the security level of "Access - People with password (inherited)" only. BUT no where is there a link, a signpost, or any menu options to allow you to change this situation. Leaving users to dive into menu after menu, hour after hour, looking for the SOURCE of this inherited 'People with Password (inherited) only" block. Eventually you give up.

Customer Service? Smugmug DON'T have customer service. Nor do they have an user manual. Instead you're meant to email enthusiasts (an incredibly SLOW way of resolving anything) or trawl through 45 minute YouTube videos.

In short Smugmug are a mess. The inherited passowrd nightmare is just ONE example. There are many others. Do some research and look for a photo sharing website that actually allows you to SHARE your photos. In the pursuit of better website design I'll be looking for a European provider in future.

I've for the most part have been satisfied with SmugMug that is until recently. There must be a bunch of high school kids in the customer department who can't figure out how to get out of the rain. No wait, high school kids would do a better job. I've had technical issues for a while now and I get the same pat answers which I know to do to correct my problems. They will admit that there is an issue with SmugMug and Safari compatibility that rears it's head about twice a month. So if you know there is an issue why sin't it being fixed? This last episode was different so i sent an email. Now granted the email address associated with this account and my email address aren't the same but my name is all over the website and my name, creditcard number address is on that account. Oh no, that isn't enough to prove I have access to the site. I prove i'm logged in but oh no, not the correct email address. Why in the heck would i want to email them and let them know i was logged in with access to everything on the site including the credit card info if I was a crook. Let's see, technical help with an issue about seeing my images is going to help me steal images. Images... credit card info. Now which is a crook going to take. I know I know , those pretty awesome images and the heck with the credit card. I had another account that I closed well over a year ago. Come to find out they didn't close it so i state 9 or more times in several emails that it was supposed to be closed and I didn't want it. I stated 6 times, yes 6 times in my last email to close it, it wasn't supposed to be active. What was their reply, "So you want to close it right? I just want to make sure that that is correct. Waiting on your reply." Say what? No wonder they get so many bad reviews and yes their charges are pretty outrageous. That's why I don't order anything through the site but place my orders with other companies and besides it's cheaper if I wanted to use their preferred printers it would be cheaper to go directly to them myself.

SmugMug has the absolute worst delivery services....afflicted by being both extremely slow and EXTREMELY expensive. Placed an order for one 8x10....and I paid for the very expensive 1-day service...and 5 days later, and I am still waiting. If you have a specific deadline, I strongly suggest you look elsewhere for a more reliable service and certainly one that is more cost effective.
