Can't and Won't Update User Profile.

TripAdvisor is an amazing site to find and review places you have been or highly recommend to others to enhance their travel experience. However, I am having some trouble with updating my user profile on this site. It will not let me change the location of where I am from. And when I clicked on "edit" above my profile to change the location it either told me that my location was not found or that my changes had been saved but nothing updated whatsoever. In fact, when I clicked on the map it shows me in Hilo but my profile says I am from Honolulu; which I am not. If anyone knows how to solve this problem please let me know. Aloha

I actually use them quit a lot to find things to do in Allentown and the nearby cities. I also read reviews before I book the hotel...Great help!

Barely Usable

Trip Advisor used to be somewhat reliable. Since Expedia bought them, they have a conflcit of interest since Expedia is in the booking business. I believe they reject a large number of negative reviews and seem to have quite a few reviews that are not at all like what you find when you get to the hotel. I used to do a lot of reviews for them until I noticed they took all of my positive reviews and rejected most of my negative ones despite the detail that I used. It seems if the hotel complains, Trip Advisor pulled my review. Essentially, this makes the site useless to me.

Unwahre Bewertungen

Beim Tripadvisor kann man auf unterhaltsame Art und Weise oft Märchen lesen.
Wir selbst sind Hotelbetreiber und hatten vor 5 Jahren die Bewertung eines Gastes der für unser Haus eine vollständige (bösartige) Bewertung abgegeben hat, aber nie dagewesen ist. Wir haben die Firma dann informiert, das dies eine Rache-Bewertung ist, weil der Gast uns erpressen wollte, damit er zum halben Preis übernachten kann.
Diese sogenanntre "Bewertung" ist heute noch vorhanden.

How do you check the validity of the reviews?

I think tripadvisor would be a better tool if those who actually booked a hotel reviewed it. It seems that anyone can make a review without merit.

fake review but Tripadvisor does not interfere

A few nights ago we wanted to visit this restaurant based on nice reviews but when we arrive there the restaurant was empty and the food was not good at all. So, we checked the website again and figured out that 50% or more review were fake. We just wanted to report this issue and hopefully you will take care of this.

This restaurant, in the Sutanahmet area, is the best in the neighborhood. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The food is wonderful. I've relied on the staff to make the selections and I've always found the dishes to be excellent. I've been to Istanbul several times and haven't found a restaurant that I enjoy nearly as much. If you're in Sultanahmet you really should eat there and if you're not it's well worth a trip across the city.

This is an amazing place to eat. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was great and the staff were very friendly. We thought we had a fantastic night out, but then as we were leaving one the waiters asked if we would like to see their 'cave'. We thought 'why not' and WOW it was incredible. We had a late evening dinner here, which is open till late, with a tasty aubergine tahini and vegetable casserole (great for vegans!), but perhaps the nicest thing were the friendly waiters! Idris was very nice and took us to see the newly discovered underground palace under the restaurant. Other staff also came along and chatted with us. Nice atmosphere!

Went there based on tripadvisor's reviews and we had a truly perfect evening. Excellent service, great , first class food, decent prices, all in all do not hesitate to go there if you're looking for guaranteed quality.

I have always been a firm believer in Tripadvisor for their important role in guaranteeing the consumer. However over the last few years when Tripadvisor changed from being a forum of discussion between consumers into a web site that also accepts and sells pubblicity of hotels and restaurants, I have noticed a big change in how comments are being posted. It seems to me that the ranking of hotels and restaurants provided by Tripadvisor is not being based only on comments from the consumer but there are other interests involved. There is no guarantee on the genuineness of the rewievs after the launch of web sites like Tripadvisorsuccess.com where certified tripadvisor members sell their comments positive or negative. There is no Authority that controls how Tripadvisor is operating so there is a complete lack of transparancy and fairness. It is sad that Tripadvisor has changed from being a great instrument for quality control into a money machine that does not guarantee the consumer in any way.

Good site, good restaurants

The list of top restaurants in Paris is good, I often agree with their choices.
However, the price factor is not really taken into account : the restaurant number one in a defined zone is often horribly expensive. It's easy to offer good food if the dinner costs 200 euro !
I rather prefer to have first the good & cheap restaurants.

An absolut must for travellers

I travel a lot, and I have come to rely on Tripadvisor when looking for hotels, restaurants, golf courses etc. I also give my own reviews, of course. Don't go anywhere without checking with Tripadvisor first !

A great site to help you form your own judgement...

I really like using the site. It has a lot of great information on it, and I use it to help me when going on vacation. The photos of the travelers put up are really great and I also like the advice that they give. I have used this for pretty much every trip and I have not been disappointed. Any hotel that has over four stars should be really solid, provided that you like its overall type and amenities. I have less experience with excursions, but I would provide the same advice.

Having said that, there are definitely some things that I would look out for. Some travelers will use the site to post negative reviews in order to try to get their money back. sometimes the reasons for wanting a refund seem legitimate, but other times they do not. Since hotels often respond to these reviews with a rebuttal, you can make your own judgment about these situations. So while you should look at the more critical reviews, you should also keep in mind that some customers have a motive or an ax to grind when posting. Overall people are very helpful and review their trips because they genuinely want to help others and because they use the site themselves.

It is already hard enough to run a business, I dont thing you need to give the opportunity to someone to ruin the hard-work of someone else.

TripAdvisor has become such an invaluable tool for me when booking holidays and travelling. I think I am now incapable of travelling without using TripAdvisor and think its a brilliant place to go for impartial reviews and up to date pictures of places.
I like the new 'Saves' function so I can keep all the places I like the look of in one place. This is brilliant inspiration when planning my next holiday!

Reviews for fellow travelers are helpful as long as you keep them in context. Some people may of just had a really bad experience due to their own fault.

The Best Out There

I don't travel without consulting TripAdvisor. It's easy to use, and most reviews are current enough to help you make a good choice. This is actually my favorite site online, and I spend most of my computer time reading reviews.

Unrealistic moaners spoil the site!

This site is spoilt by people moaning. Take restaurants for instance; you have people that normally frequent Nando's allowed to comment on decent restaurants, thinking that they are a food critic because they watched Master Chef once. They are judging the food on their own basic pallet and moaning on trip advisor to make them come across as someone who could tell a Beef Wellington from a cardboard, supposedly beef burger in a Wellington! They then go home and cook chicken nuggets. Because of these people you have to ignore half the reviews, which does make it difficult to tell what is real and what is not when trying a new place. These people by no coincidence are the same idiot professional moaners that complain to try and get their meals for free. They are rude, self-gratifying philistines! Lock them up! The same applies for hotels, holidays etc.

Rude people always seem to have bad holidays and service. Perhaps it's because they don't have the intelligence to realise that you are treated in the same way you treat others. Chill out and have a better life! Canadians are terrible for this on review sites.

Brilliant site with reviews you can trust

I use this for loads of things - hotels, holidays, restaurants etc and I always respect the reviews on there. Maybe it's like-minded people that leave reviews but it's a definite for me.

The first place to check if you are booking a holiday.

I use this site everytime I go to book a weekend away or for a longer stay. Its nice to see what other people who have stayed in the hotel you are booking have to say about it.

I have found in the past some of the discriptions are a bit over the top with people picking up on small things that shouldnt concern you on a holiday but thats why its good to read and then make a comment when you come back from your stay.

Dont take there word or it

I went on trip advisor in order to help select my recent holiday to Tenerife, although it helped the site is mainly customers own reviews which I found led to an unfair summary of the holiday.

My Step #1 Before Any Trip is Trip Advisor

Trip Advisor has often provided very useful and current info for us regarding lodging, rentals, restaurants, and places of interest along the way and even in our own area. I greatly value this site. I also appreciate being able to share reviews of what I've discovered with others on Trip Advisor, including photos. I recommend this site heartily.

A website that can ruin a reputable business

Anyone can write anything that they wish about a business from slanderous remarks to lies. This could potentially ruin businesses. It is a website that is biased towarde the reviewer, leaving little, or no, control to the business owner. Should be banned. They should be sued, fined heavily, and removed from the internet.
