They were slow responding to payment problems with their website, and slow responding to requests for the transfer AUTH code of the domain I purchased. I eventually had to stay up until 1am GMT-8:00 to call them when they were open in Europe, and had to argue with them to just give me the AUTH code instead of creating an account with the domain registry they wanted me to use.

I understand that domain transfers involve multiple parties, and I am not reviewing the other parties involved. This does not explain why your website would not accept payment and multiple communications with you over a few days were required to arrange payment via an alternate method. Once payment was made, I received no communication with you until I followed up days later, and was then directed to a different URL (to get the AUTH code) that required a "secret code" to login. I was told that the code was mailed to me multiple times, and I tried the "I forgot my code" recovery link about 20 times over a day without receiving the recovery email. (I run my own email server and was able to packet-trace looking for connections from you, no connections were attempted).
When I finally telephoned at 1am California time to get the AUTH code, I was speaking with an agent who then tried to get me to set up an account at your registrar (I forget which) in order to receive the domain. You say "easiest and cheapest way", but I don't understand how having to set up a new account at a registrar I'm not familiar with would be easier (or cheaper) than dropping the AUTH code into the domain transfer process at the registrar of my choice. The agent finally agreed to give me the AUTH code, and did so immediately.
This is on you. The problems were all communication related, when I finally telephoned and argued, I was able to receive the AUTH code, which means you had it available to you all along. No other stakeholder was involved in either the payment process nor the transfer process.
Domain transfers are a four stakeholder process. Multiple parties are involved and some of the stakeholders like the registrar that manages the domain but also the domain owner/seller influence the transfer process.
