Automatically locked my account right after i registered and verified my credit card. Actually, it is the first time in my life i see something like this ! Don't waste your time with this company !

Heavy spammer, but at least helpfull

First of all, I'm not a customer at DigitalOcean, however I have an equally bad experience with DO as many of the other reviews here, let me explain:
I run a small family/business mail and webserver and as many others we receive a fair deal of spam/unsolicited mails, some days more than other and SpamAssassin usually takes care of the problem.
Out of curiosity I tried loading the first 100 domain names from the spam folder to infobyip, a website that provides bulk lookup of up to 100 domain names/IP addresses.
To my surprise, 95 of these 100 domains originated from DO's ASN #14061.
I can see other reviews complaining that they block SMTP traffic, in that case it is quite strange that their system is so heavily overrepresented in my spam filter. Looking around the web I can see I'm not the only one getting attacked from DO servers, so for now the solution is to block the complete ASN #14061. That instantly removed 95% of the workload on my mail/spam fighting system (Postfix/SpamAssassin)
I know this will also block legit users of DO, but I can only recommend them to switch to a more serious provider.
Reply to answer: I have got some help regarding the spam, but not as stated in answer since i'm not a customer at DigitalOcean. For now I have raised my rating to 2 stars for at least trying to do something (and for a lot of usefull guides regarding fighting spam, even if a bit of irony is involved, considered the percentage of spam originating from DO themselves...)

Locked account right after paying $5/mo for it!

I have recently found this review board while I was Googling for "DigitalOcean Sucks", and I have a story about DigitalOcean antics that I want to share. Last summer I needed a VPS for a personal project, I wanted to try first the service before getting their premium plan, right after I signed up for the basic $5/mo plan, they locked my account...what? Sent a ticked the same day (it was June 30), they answered me only on Aug 27! I got a canned answer about their internal tools caught patterns associated with fraudulent behaviour.
How this was even possible I don't know, since I didn't even had the chance to do literally anything.
As of today, my account is still locked and I cannot even access the setting or remove my personal and payment information. I opened a ticket asking that they remove my personal and payment information and close/delete the account. Guess what? I never had any answer they just keep my personal data as an hostage, how is this even legal?
And look at the cookie cutter answers they provide, someone from the marketing department, just go around the board here and there and copy and paste the same answers to reviewers, taking laziness to the next level. Worst service ever, stay away from those clowns, I would not go back to DO even if "they" pay me.
I want my payment and private information removed and at Do nobody seems to care, they seems to lack motivation, so I will file a privacy complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada explaining the situation, maybe that can fix it.

As expected, they answered to this post "like they did for other post as well" with the usual copy&paste answer. Oh yeah, your security systems are doing such a "great" job lol, are you for real? Opening a ticket, again? Are you kidding me? I opened a ticket and you waited 2 months to answer, just to reply with a nonsensical canned answer sent by a bot! I recently opened a new ticket asking you to delete my account, still no answer, you are such liars and bullshitters and your support sucks so bad, I swear, I have never experienced something that bad, you literally have no support at all, you just use bot to automate your tickets answers. Paradoxically, you are very quick to answer on this board than on your ticketing service, your business practice and customers service don't make any sense whatsoever.
Digital Ocean is still holding my personal and payment information, the account was not deleted as requested. This is very shady, unethical, and probably illegal. I don't even care anymore. FU Digital Ocean.

They locked my new account

EDIT 04.03.2021 after their reply: ticket number was #04471971, I deleted my account since I am not planning to make use of your services at any point in the future.

Opened an account and it got locked. Support does not exist, they only reply with automated responses. I told them I request deletion of my account after they failed to understand English but they still use the automatic reply "Your account was found to match patterns associated with fraudulent behavior, which is a violation of our Terms of Service. After review, we have determined that restoring access to your account is not possible." (I sent them all possible proof and I bet they did not even look over it). I am going to submit a GDPR complaint. Steer away from these shameless scammers!

Vultr has more performant VPS's and they do not lock accounts at random.

I was reading some of the bad reviews…

I was reading some of the bad reviews like someone complaining about port 25 being blocked. If you know anything about Email, you know port 25 and 110 must always be blocked so you can use SSL. Port 25 is extremely vulnerable. Anyway, I have used DO for over a year and love the speed, flexibility and support. I have hosted my Wordpress on many platforms and DO gives me the best performance. Before you complain, if you don't fully know how to manage your own Linux server, go to a cheap shared hosting platform or get someone with more experience to help you. The port 25 complaint is just mind blowing.

Port 25 (All Mail Services) Blocked

After wasting an entire day's worth of work, I finally found out that my PHP mail() script wasn't working because DigitalOcean have blocked Port 25, meaning all mail services are restricted.

I made a support ticket explaining how I'm only hosting a small company website that would use an email contact form for customers. Being a very small local company it would use < 100 emails per year - not even close to spam. They replied quickly (most likely an automated response) telling me they will not unblock Port 25 and suggested me to pay for additional mail services from other websites!

No doubt these websites are paying DigitalOcean for this referral and to block mail services in order to encourage users to do so. Very disappointed and will be moving to a different VPS service that has Port 25 open.

Account locked after gave $5 to DO

after gave $5 to DO, I got this message: "We are sorry to inform you that your account has been locked by DigitalOcean.", i asked them why, they told me that my account " was found to match patterns associated with fraudulent behavior". funny, I used my email and paypal account sign up at google cloud, AWS, IBM, Vultr, never got any problem. just wanna to try DO when i found their ad in gmail, and slap on my face.

Supported me through the pandemic

I see quite a few negative reviews on here for DigitalOcean, but I've never experienced many of the issues people raise. There was a time when customer support took days to answer a few years ago, but I never have to wait more than a few hours these days.

In addition, all through this pandemic DO support have been exceptionally helpful, even when my business couldn't pay bills for up to 3 months at a time. They've given me extension after extension, and when I miss the cut off and my servers get suspended they have them back up and running even with a partial payment.

I acknowledge that DO IP addresses are blacklisted on many databases for spam and malware, and that definitely needs to be addressed, but for email that can be rectified by using DMARC and other security mechanisms.

Overall, I've been a happy customer for many years.

I will not recommend using this company…

I will not recommend using this company as a hosting server. They do not care about you as a user/client. What they care about is the money that you pay that include nothing more than maintain their servers and pay salaries.

No help, no support, no nothing!

Trader of block IPs

All it's IPs are blocked IPs. Such a waste of time to build an app on Digital Ocean.
I contacted them many times and they responded very fast, just to know their responses has no action.
They always say... our service is not meant for ...
So if I complain about ftp that is blocked by other service providers, they respond that "we suggest you to use external service providers"
If I complain about mail server, they respond "we suggest you to use external service providers".
If I complain about http server, they respond "we suggest you to use external service providers".

So what is DigitalOcean is good for?
If I wanted to use external service providers, why should I come to digital ocean?

They are the trader of blocked IPs.

Never use it again.

Never use it again.

I registered on digitalocean and got my 100$ coupon for using their services for 2 month. In the midle of my trial they locked me out from my account. I asked them for the reason, they said my account got locked because of "security reasons". I didnt get the main reason, they can't tell me it, just "security reasons".I asked them to revover my account, or if they cant just give me 5 days to save all of my data to prevent data loss. I got a message that they can't do it... interesting..... . So all of my data have been lost. I totally don't recommend their services. I suggest you to use big companies' cloud service (google, microsoft-azure, amazon-aws) and beware of Digitalocean, they will steal your data and lock you out from your account.

Horrible POS

Just signed up a client this week. They locked the account with a message saying they are going to delete everything in 10 days. Can't even retrieve any data. When replying to them, all you get is a generic message:

Your account was found to match patterns associated with fraudulent behavior, which is a violation of our Terms of Service. After review, we have determined that restoring access to your account is not possible.

What a waste of time spending the last couple days moving their sites over.

I will be moving my own websites away from DigitalOcean as this is extremely sketchy.

Contacted them upon their request and got the following:

"Thank you for taking out the time and reaching out to us in regards to the account lock - happy to look into it for you.

We have reviewed your request and in order to ensure the best experience for our users, the lock on your account will stay as is for now.

To ensure the integrity of our security systems, we cannot disclose which specific factors led us to this decision. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we wish you the best in your future hosting endeavors."

What was even the point? So they will basically shut your account down without giving you a reason. What a crappy company.

Excellent services at reasonable costs.

I signed up for DigitalOcean through their GitHub Education partnership, which gives all new users (who are students) $50 in free credit. This is equivalent to about 10 months of their cheapest Droplet, at $5/mo for 1GB of RAM, 25GB SSD space, and 1vCPU core.

DO has been absolutely fantastic as a student, providing enough features for what I think is a reasonable price. It may not be the cheapest when you only factor in the cost of servers, but the benefits of DNS that updates almost instantly, domain name management, free static site deployment with App Platform, and more means that I was able to learn the basics of app deployment all in one space and very conveniently. I will definitely keep paying for this service because of all these extra features and the excellent dashboard experience, especially compared to the clutter of some other services I have used like Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

However, I do have some cautions. For those new to this sort of thing, stay away from their web console. I'd rather they promoted another tool than have their web terminal available, since it's not very good (doesn't support copy and paste, for example). Additionally, for students and those working on smaller projects, I'd also recommend setting up databases inside of a Droplet, rather than opting for their base $15/month relational database service, which is quite expensive. However, I personally don't think this is a huge issue - if you need the databases at a larger scale, you're likely going to be happy about their data safety and backups, etc.

Overall though, DO has excellent features, documentation, community guides and support (even for topics that aren't related to their platform), and in my opinion, offers compelling features for an extremely reasonable price.

Just froze my account and shut off all…

Just froze my account and shut off all droplets after 2 days of running. No explanation. Their support is not responsive despite using their ticket system. They just completely disrupted everything.

Just an awful experience. Will not likely use this company again.

Like others, account cancelled without warning

Like many of the other reviews, there is a good chance your account will be banned for "security" reasons without warning and without an explanation.
If you are okay with being dropped by a provider without notice or warning and without a real dialogue to figure out what the issue was, then by all means use these guys.

However, there are plenty of competitors out there that are easier to use and do not have a brick wall / black hole approach customer support.

This review was left with my name and Digital Ocean is more than able to look up the ticket associated with this concern.

Unprofessional Experience

My account was locked without warning because of suspected "fraudulent" use. I asked what in their definition was fraudulent use and I was told that they couldn't disclose that information to me. I requested account closure and was sent a guide on how to close my account by using my "account profile" that they locked. After I opened a ticket to close my account I was sent a response that had nothing to do with account closure. It stated that they had cofirmed my data and payment info. Then they reminded me that my account was suspected fraudulent and couldnt release any details. It is 12 hours after the account lock and they still haven't closed my account with 0 balance due. Overall an unprofessional experience. I would steer clear of DigitalOcean.
