backup NOT

I've been using idrive to "backup" 2 very important PCs for over 3 years. I've had several times where my backups were failing for some reason but didn't realize it because all they do to notify you is add the word "failed" in their daily emails. Not very noticeable since you don't really pay attention to these things after a while. There should be a separate notification that stands out like a sore thumb. The help feels like it's not from "around here" if you catch my drift. Last year I found out that no backup were taking place for over 6 months. The fix? Reinstall the application. Which I did. And then I saw the word "success" in their report. Ok. I'm good to go! NOT.
Yesterday I screwed up a bunch of files for a software program that I've been writing.
When I went to recover these files from my "backup" I was pissed when I realized that my PC hadn't been backed up since I received that one "success" email. I didn't even get one of their lame "backup failed" emails. I contacted them. Their solution: reinstall the application. I'm done. Cancel my membership. What am I paying for? Do I have to monitor the integrity of my backup? Isn't that their job?

It's only worth to backup the android…

It's only worth to backup the android phones. I have connected 5 devices to my account. 3 mobile phones (android) and 2 laptops. For backup mobile phones the app is great. It works perfectly but... On PC it's a bulshit. First sync works but later you must be prepared for problems, for example:

- "Preparing file list" hangs - when backup starts, the first thing app does, it creates file list for backup. The process hang very frequently, almost every backup. You shoild manually cancel backup task and start it again and be hopefull that it will complete this time.

- Big cache directory. App is creating iDriveLocal directory on "random" (or the largest - i'm not sure) disk. It's not big deal, but this directory can grow even to 100 GB (in my situation). Those files are never deleted.

- I've also tested the app on linux and there is another problem... Complicated installation (because the app is set of perl scripts) and there is no possibility to rollback directories. You can recover files but not directories. This is webUI limitation because app on linux doesn't have desktop application. Also those scripts hangs very often and the result is that in webui you see that your device is offline. I can't tell if its the same problem like on windows but it's very annoying

So... I've tested many backup applications and I can tell that iDrive is the worst one. The problem with aplication is that it has a many different features. It's like a mix of multiple tools in one. You can backup f.e. not only files but also databases etc. Those features are great but... the base of the application is corrupted. The base is a backup every files on hdd and I can't tell that it's working. It's often not working than working so you may end with backup which is even a weeks behind your computer.

For me, the best app for backup is backblaze - it doesn't have any features. this only backup files but it's doing it's job perfectly. The only lack is... no support for linux and mobile phones. You can only backup windows and macos.

The worst app is iDrive. On PC is not working at all, but if you backup your mobile data - it's doing it job but only on mobile phones. Backuping a PC with this tool is.... there is nothing more to write about that... I don't recommend this app if you need to backup your PC

I should also mention that I'm testing iDrive almost a year and those problems persist since I've started using this app. I've writed many mails with support. Support also tried to fix this problem directly on my computer (by remote hands) - they failed. Those problem still persists on two different laptops with differenct configuration and application set.

Should have checked Trustpilot reviews before buying !

I can't believe I didn't check Trustpilot before signing up for IDrive online backup. I relied on PCMag reviews etc which said it was great. In what universe is that ? Total waste of money. It has taken me nearly a week to upload 3GB of data. Customer support is non-existent. They blame my ISP and internet connection but I didn't have this slow upload/download speed with OneDrive or GoogleDrive. I only moved to IDrive because I need more than the 5TB max capacity of OneDrive and GoogleDrive. IDrive offers 10TB but what use is that if I can't get data in and out for days ? At least I discovered what a shambles it is after just a week and can stop wasting any more time on it. But I'm still down £100. Avoid, Avoid, Avoid !

Not great for Mac users

Mac users can't clone HD or do any kind of full backup and, what is really annoying, is they don't tell you. All the instructions say 'click the Clone/Computer backup button on iDrive panel, but they DONT tell you it's Windows only. Pretty poor. Support was quick to tell me when I contacted them but I should have known this from the outset. So Mac users, understand you can ONLY back up your user folder and nothing in your HD > Applications, Library or Systems. As of March 2022, they have no timeline to add this capability.

crooks who take your money without authorisation

Crooks! Used iDrive to backup my data but I did not set to auto renew, when the auto renewal should have taken place they did not send me an email as expected to inform its time to renew, they simply deactivated my account so no way of logging in again. So I sent and email saying their service was shoddy and should I move back to Carbonite. What did they do? Reactivate my account and take 99.50$ USD without my authorisation! When I contacted them they would not respond, when I got unhappy and told them I would leave a bad review they came back with the following statement in an email:

We have followed your instructions. I'm sure something appreciated by people who find us highly recommended.

My instructions? The following email:
Hi - I never got any notification that the account was due for renewal only a message this morning that my account was deactivated. Very disappointing. What sort of service is that? Shall I just move back to Carbonite?

So they say lots of people who highly recommend? Certainly not from the reviews i'm seeing... I used to recommend them, certainly not anymore, crooks who take your money without authorisation, now onto the bank!

Just didn't seem to work

I tried iDrive but couldn't seem to get it to restore data. In addition, it really slowed down my home desktop computer to an almost unusable state. On my laptop the performance was better but not good. But the main issue was not being able to restore files. That was a deal breaker.

if you value your time and energy stay away!

it's suposedly has linux support but it would be better if they said it doesn't. On Ubuntu it's a nightmare to use. Can't seem to restore files. And on Manjaro I couldn't set it up at all

iDrive is horrible and dosn't work

iDrive is horrible and dosn't work. Let me list the ways, things I've just encountered this morning.

1. No easy way to add folders. This is a failure of the primary purpose of the software.

2. Infinite "building file list" messages with no actual backup being done. Another primary failure.

3. Every time I try to login via the web, I'm told my username is an "invalid syntax" even though another page, the one accessed directly through the app, says I'm using exactly the right login.

4. I can't even recover my password, since it needs a username to initiate the password change. Which, as above, isn't accepted. Why do they think I want to recover my account? Every other such option I've seen on the web -- every single one -- only requires an email address with confirmation. Not a username.

In short, nothing works, I can't fix anything. This software is entirely worthless. It's a waste of time, and only gives you a false sense of security. I'll be telling everyone I know to never touch this horrible software. And I'll be finding an online backup solution that actually works.

iDrive Personal sucks!

It's 2022 and they still have major issues.

* The functions of the app on your device and the cloud interface don't match and it's really hard to figure out how to do the same thing on both.

* If you aren't at the device where you backed up an external drive, you have to use the cloud interface to access those files and there's a download limit (worthless!). There's no limit if you use the app installed on the device where you backed up an external device, so keep it handy if you can so you can download those external drive files if needed. Think about it - what if you lose access to your computer or external hard drive and are faced with limits on downloading data from the cloud interface?

* The cloud interface will NOT search for folders, only files. The app is supposed to search for folders, but mine will not.

* You cannot narrow your search to a folder or a device, every search will search the entire archive (minus trash) which is a waste of time.

* You cannot search your trash, so if you have a lot in there coming from a complex file structure, you have to go through file by file if you deleted, or thought you might have deleted something in error, which is ridiculous.

* If you use the cloud to search your archive, you can't sort by the source of the file (worthless). I have 2 mobiles, a C drive and external D drive to search, and I want to know what is coming from which device, or at least what folder it's in (in case there are duplicates).

* Tech support sucks - I was on chat for 4 hours today, sending screenshots and being asked to check the same thing over and over. Finally the tech remotely connected, and he could finally see what I was talking about and selected an option to rebuild the database which worked. Why didn't he do that after 15 minutes at the most?

* You cannot rename or move a folder or file in either the app or the cloud interface, so if you need to resort or move things around in your archive, forget it.

*The worst is that you can't use the Archive Cleanup function on an external drive, so if you do some changes to a cloud backup after uploading it - DO NOT reconnect your external drive or it will upload everything from that drive that you deleted or downloaded somewhere else from the archive. Nowhere does the product tell you that.

* You MUST to do an Archive Cleanup on your C drive backup pretty often because the cloud backup hangs onto things you've deleted or changed from your C drive manually. When you look at it in the archive via the app or the cloud, it's really confusing because you knew you deleted or moved/downloaded stuff, and there it is again! Who doesn't delete/update/change your data folders on a C drive pretty often?

* If a 'stuck' folder from the archive keeps reappearing even though it's gone, you must use Archive Cleanup but only the files go away and not the parent folder. You don't know that unless you check the size/properties of the folder and it shows 0. The child files will still look like they are under the folder structure, but they aren't really. I have a lot of empty folders to deal with after running Archive Cleanup and it’s so confusing! You have to find them one by one in your archive, or be confused when you do a restore and have empty folders you thought were deleted.

* Rating = big fat zero. I'm switching to something else as soon as possible. I have wasted so much time that I will NEVER get back. I despise this product and the tech support. They need a searchable user forum where these questions can be answered or queried as they come up.

EDIT: iDrive has responded with their typical response (see other reviews) to get a good score on response time on this site. Their is nothing that their public relations can do because the product itself, as designed, is flawed and confusing. They aren't going to change that or they would have already. I put this review out there in the event that someone else might find it and thoroughly research the ups and downs before committing data, money, and time into the program. I mentioned earlier that I was on tech support chat for FOUR HOURS. 3.5 hours before the tech decided to provide remote assistance which did solve one problem only.

I wanted to like the product because they don't scan and use your stored data like Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, and you aren't forced into a file structure you don't like or need with Apple's iCloud. Most personal users want a simple structure for cloud backup with full control over storing, sorting, and downloading data as needed. Also a mirror type sync to an external drive. I'm going back to an external SSD drive.

Online backup system

Whilst I was finishing my days work in my home office and I was closing all open files the screen on my Dell xps25 totally froze. This really worried me as I though that I might have lost a lot of work. After about waiting for one hour nothing changed. I unplugged the computer and waited about 5 minutes and Re plugged the computer. When it booted it came immediately to Support Recovery screen. This screen offered a factory reset but would would erase all files and programmes. This I did not want to I clicked the home button which brought me back to where my system was before the screen had frozen. After then saying all open files it appeared that the problem was insufficient memory due to many files open at the one time. This then made me to look up a reputable online backup system. During my Google search I can across iDrive which ticked all the boxes I need especially that it should be able to save my ENTIRE computer. I could back up my entire computer and then any changes made thereafter would be saved without saving the entire computer. It also offered the options to go back to any date and have your computer operate it’s if that was the actual date. Finally from a price point of view it was excellent value. I would certainly recommend this online back up software without hesitation.

Doesn't backup all your files

Doesn't backup all your files. Doesn't tell you which files it hasn't backed up or why.
Support have been aware of this for nearly 12 months and have no answer.
I will be moving my data as they cannot be trusted.

Regarding your reply, you've had 12 months looking into my account already, I suspect nothing is going to change.

Well Where do I start

Well Where do I start, first I've been using I drive for a couple of years seems ok the data seems to be being up, recently I'm seeing data, or files missing in the backup. Look closer in the reports seems the system is deleting or cleaning file, auto deleting files. no files should be delete for any reason unless the user does that on their own. A recent ransomware attack infected 3 computers, was able to recover one pc but some of the files are missing like a whole months worth. the other 2 computers completely wipe from Idrive, the hacker deleted the back ups and most likely empty the Idrive trash. I've contacted support yesterday around 12:00 pm created a Ticket the backend team was contacted ( THE BACKEND TEAM IS INDIA ) the time DIFFRENCE is not helpful, no USA support at all!!! The support team are bots only (Human Bots) I got one email today around 7:00 PM saying they are working on my inquiry. ( Data Loss=Inquiry LOL) I guess ill be looking for another Cloud Backup Solution. I guess you get what you pay for life lesson number 1……

Fed 3,2022
Now the 3 day with no files . I also reply to the IDrive relations email yesterday . So far no response. I guess the people in India feel they are either better than the people in the USA. Or just don’t care . So many people have lost data to IDrive backup solutions sad really empty promises . No support , no communications one email in 3 days not good . I’m so upset .I trusted them only to be let down. What to do next .

Steep decline in cutomer / technical support

While the service offers a lot for the money, the customer service and tech support have deteriorated enormously. Recently, I requested an Express Drive (the company will send you an external hard drive through the mail for initial backups, or as in my case I needed to start from scratch because I changed may account to a more secure private encryption key which necessitates deleting all one's data from their servers before re-uploading data.) The Express drive was 2 weeks late in arriving to my home (when I called to inquire as to why I had not yet received it, it sounded like nobody on their end had a clue as to why it had not been sent out.) After I returned the drive to them - I paid to Fedex it myself, because the return label they provide was for Fedex Ground only - a dubious proposition considering it was going from Boston to Oregon in the middle of winter - I hear nothing from them days after my tracking showed it had been delivered. I was about to give up on them, when I received an email saying that the backup I sent was improperly done (something about the backup having been made from a computer that was not registered with my account - preposterous because it was made from my primary desktop computer which comprises 90% of my backed up data with iDrive.) Long story short...after hours on hold with their overburdened customer support I finally got connected to a tech who looked at the logs from my iDrive app - and that person confirmed that I had done everything correctly on my end. He was going to send this case to the department that handles issues like this one - and "sorry, you cannot contact them personally." It's been another week since that communication. I am not holding my breath.

2+ years of testing: Cheap, but unstable and unreliable.

I have now been using iDrive on multiple devices for several years. iDrive is cheap, which is obviously in its favor. However, it is not reliable. I have encountered numerous failures during the course of my usage, the latest being that when a new version is available the iDrive service tries to auto-update to the new version, first uninstalling itself (not cleanly), then the installation update software crashes, leaving the system with hung processes running, and no iDrive apps installed. iDrive confirmed the behavior, and also said that the auto-update feature cannot be disabled. Be very careful before relying on iDrive to safeguard your data.

App is monitoring for credit card info

I believe the iDrive product/service, overall, is good enough to keep your content backed up. However, I experienced something odd this last week.

About a year ago, I purchased the service on a credit card. However, a few months before the renewal was supposed to go through, I had fraudulent activity on the card and had to cancel the card. I couple of months later, iDrive tried to renew the service, and they kept trying charge my cancelled card, repeatedly, every week for months. I would get notices about it from my credit card company, that's the only reason I knew about it.

I intended to renew my service once I got caught up on paying a couple of bills. I was going to put in my new card numbers, but you know how it goes, I hadn't gotten around to it yet.

The system that I have iDrive loaded on isn't a main computer, it's my file storage computer. Everyone in the family uses it to store their stuff on. Normally, I don't use that computer to do any kind of financial transactions. However, it was the closest computer, in a quick moment, where I needed to pay something online. Literally, within 6 hours of me entering my new credit card info, to pay a bill online, iDrive (somehow, magically obtained and) used the same CC numbers I'd used in my browser to pay a different bill, to renew my iDrive subscription. I contacted them about it to get a refund (which is a whole other story), and to complain about their app, monitoring browser input for credit card information, and both the support and billing reps denied that their app is "sniffing" for credit card input on a computer. This is a lie! It's totally sniffing for credit info. It has to be! There is no other answer for how this happened.

Unparalleled Cloud Backup for Mac

Much of the negative reviews are true, but unfortunately backing up your entire computer to the cloud was never going to be quick or easy on your CPU! Please don't be a moron and leave a one star review because of this unavoidable reality! Leave it for REAL problems (which I DID see SOME people actually do)!

Their desktop backup software is unparalleled in my experience of "Time Machine" (i.e. you can rewind and look at older versions of your computer) cloud backups of ENTIRE COMPUTERS! I tried to do something similar with my workplaceses 1Tb OneDrive and it litterally just died.

I actually bought the IDrive 10Tb on a $3.95 deal with 80$ for the next year. 80$ is really a great price, so I was expecting a buggy product (it's actually not buggy at all!! it's an amazing product!!).

A lot of the reviews talk about slow upload, this is indeed the case if you have slow internet (as I do). Your ISP will sometimes even throttle your upload speed if it sees you continuously uploading for a long time (I know this from my experience torrenting).

I had to disconnect (because I was taking my laptop back and forth from uni) from the internet about 50 times while doing the first backup of my MacBook Pro (it took about two weeks to back up as my internet is slooooowwww).
Even with all these interruptions it performed spectacularly and has now fully backed up my mac completely.

I've yet to try the scheduled backups (someone in the comments said it had problems) or backup my work Windows laptop. But I'll come back and inform you if either of those didn't go well.

I strongly recommend this product from my experience so far and feel that the negative comments are simply unjustified. Slow internet isn't a reason to leave a bad review you numpties!

Borderline Scammers

Lots and lots and lots of problems with this service.
The backup procedure regulary fails. When the backup actually work the upload speed is ridiculously slow, so be prepared to spend literaly weeks or months to upload the contents of your harddrives if you use it for anything else than just Facebook.

The "support" is just an automated bot system that won´t help you with anything.

This is a borderline scam company and I recommend you stay as far away as possible

Edit: iDrive answered this rewiev with their usual "Have you tried contacting support", how they respond to all critisism, which is laughable since there is absolutely no point in contacting iDrive support. They will just send you a standardised respons telling you to re-install the iDrive app, they won´t answer any specific questions or give you any actual help, and then they´ll close the issue without resolving it.

They also asked if I have tried their "Express" alternative, which means that they will send you a physical harddrive to make your backup. The problem with that method is that iDrive has a 3TB limit for the Express service, and that just isn´t enough for my needs. I find it weird to offer a physical hardrive option that only lets you backup a fraction of the space you are actually paying for.

Never finished even one complete backup…

Never finished even one complete backup of MacBook Pro. Took three weeks to back up not quite entire drive, but kept stalling throughout and then right before the final files. User interface is astonishingly horrible. Provides little and inconsistent information needed to understand what is going on. Tech "support" asked me to use the Verify function, but clicking that button seems to have no effect. Tech "support" never responded to that most recent problem. I gave up, deleted all my files from their cloud, deleted the app, told IDrive to cancel my account. I guess I've lost my first year's payment to a scam company.
