Really good course

Really good course and great support from linked social media groups, would be good to maybe include videos for “how to” which would help different types of learners

Teaches you to want to be a skilled photographer

and not a random mass snapper.

I was a keen on photography in my teens but as it was film only, I could not afford the costs to really learn the trade. As digital broke I got back into it and snapped thousands of mundane images for a few average ones.

This course emphasises the basics and teaches you how to make every shot count. I now have the cost benefit of digital and the time benefit of making the shot right first time with minimal post processing.

The course runs in a logical flow each module building on the previous. The assignments are challenging with quick and help input from your tutor. (Replies to questions usually within 24hours, assignments back 2-3 days)

It would take dedication to get done in six months, but it is achievable. I had to take a break but believe I will take eleven months in total. I am now looking at the advanced modules.

I wish this course had been around 35 years ago, my career choices may have been very different.

Knowledgeable tutors

In my personal opinion, I have learned a lot on how photography works in order to achieve great results, different styles, history of photography and many other aspects. My understanding of it is great however I struggle a lot doing the actual tasks at hand because I am very limited in terms of where I can take to photos to complete these tasks and lacking of equipment such as lenses and space. I also have no experience of Photoshop and struggle immensely on this and my computer is not ideally compatible making it harder to create the results I want when required to use this tool. The tutors however are very knowledgeable and helpful if required.

Not bad

Course content is useful but quite badly explained in places.

Have a basic understanding first.

I was a complete novice with photography, after a bit of research and a very inviting half price offer on this course, I signed up. The course is basically a lot of reading and then an assignment, it would be nice if there was an interactive side to it, to keep your mind sharp and test what you've learnt. The information is quite technical and could use breaking down a bit more or be explained in layman's terms at times, also it could use a good bit of proof reading, however before you know it, you will be taking better photos and checking settings you never even knew existed. Customer support is very friendly and amazingly helpful, if you have any problems at all, they will do whatever they can to help. With everything it has it's good sides and bad. I have learnt a lot thanks to this course, though it has been challenging at times, I look forward to completing it soon.

Amazing course!

Really good course, aimed at even beginners like me. I'm half way through and have already learnt a great deal on how to use my DSLR camera and how to take better photos. I would reccomend this course to anyone who loves photography.

It’s been ok so far not what I really expected to be honest and in particular no 6 lighting where it talks about general lighting and then predominantly based around studio which not always accessible and then the assignment although supposedly general is based around studio really and not well explained. I think the whole course is not flexible as you have to complete each module in order, that is the assignment you can do the course but not the assignment which if I haven’t bought the additional course would have meant I exceeded my time as models were not at a premium. This area is specialised and not one of my areas I would ever want to persue but each model seems to be governed by the author preferences and in my view not an evaluative course. The additional modules at 125 are much better

Photography Institute review

The Photography Institute course really is great in terms is teaching technical elements and the know-how behind the art. Great tutors and great supportive Facebook groups. I would however like the course updated to include more video content but I’ve been supplementing learning through youtubers such as Jamie Windsor. The user interface of the PI student website needs updating too as the UX for sending tutors messages isn’t fantastic.
That is the only reason for not giving 5 stars.
The course is a real challenge and I have learnt so much from it. Hoping to set up my own sideline in the future.

Great course!

I am currently half way through the course and really enjoying it! The modules are really interesting and give you all the info you need to be able to complete the assignments, they are also varied and cover a broad range of subjects.
My tutor has been great when marking my work - giving detailed constructive feedback.
I was completely new to photography and my DSLR camera when I began the course and I feel it has really helped me get the best out of my camera!

Well structured and enjoyable course

I’ve just finished module six (half way) and so far l’m really enjoying my course. The materials online are well presented and informative.
It’s helped me to achieve one of my aims to take better photos and stop using the ‘auto’ settings for my camera.
My tutor is prompt with his responses to my questions (especially as he’s in a completely different time zone). His feed back is constructive and supportive.
Would recommend this if you want to improve you photography skills.

The Photography Institute course is an excellent opportunity to be challenged and develop your photography skills

The Photography Institute course is an excellent vehicle for developing your photography skills, for the keen amateur as well as those who intend to work professionally. Some of the assignments are quite challenging but that’s what you want if you’re going to learn more. There is a promise to provide feedback on and mark an assignment within a few days but in my experience the feedback and marking has been provided within 24 hours. It is really helpful to receive constructive and encouraging feedback from an experienced professional photographer. Once the first two modules have been completed there is an option to purchase more advanced modules such as landscape and travel, and wedding photography. With an advanced module you get an extension of 6 months free of charge. In reading the modules it is very interesting to gain an insight into how a professional photographer thinks and works. Younger students who have only ever used digital cameras may wonder about the relevance of the section on film photography but that is actually very interesting eg illustrating how photographers have always engaged in modifying their photos after they’ve taken them.
