Zero stars

Shockingly bad customer services. Honestly the worst I've experienced in 20 years dealing with companies. False promises. Zero care given. Stick to your TomToms.

More cowboys than the High Chaparral

Nuvi 2545LM - didn't start that good and just got worse.

Day one the official Garmin cash-back offer took forever and lots of chasing. Of course you are constantly faced with the problem of dealing with 'American' everything while being Western European. e.g. Major help for airports, but next to f-all for ferry ports and border crossings.

Another major problem, say you want to get from somewhere in western France to somewhere in central Germany. If you try to put in one or more 'via' points, the machine cannot understand you have a preference for which motorway/bypass you want to use and insists you must enter a street address??? e.g. e.g. You want to use the Mons bypass but Garmin can only understand you want to stop-off at some address IN Mons????

Despite adhering to the long-winded multi drop Garmin updates, the machine just got slower and slower and slower till the Routes function failed 90% and only a tiny useless square was shown in the centre of the display. Yes, totally useless. In use, on occasion I had alternate off motorway directions which took me into dirt-track agricultural areas, down roads still being constructed, and places where Americans could say “you can’t get there from here?” Other dislikes are the massively thick umbilical cord for power supply, which you have to use to connect the Traffic aerial. There should be a Traffic aerial socket ALSO on the unit so you could then use a thin/normal power lead.

After wading through their web waffle, it seemed I needed to go for a total re-set and start again. But, the re-set procedure failed. Then, in start-up while loading maps it went into re-set option? I executed this but no difference except all my saved places had gone.

After 40 minutes on the phone with Garmin they said my unit has a fault - wow, I never guessed that. I could send it in for a fix/replace but, it would cost me £40!!!!!!!!

Really? No, of course it won't. I'll open it up to extract the battery, then apply a lump hammer to the rest before it goes in the bin.

Y'all. Have a nice day.

Got a new Garmin!

After having had a Garmin Nuvi 1390 for some years, I updated it. Now it worked even better, although the maps were a bit old. But suddenly after a new update, it did not work at all, except for showing the Garmin Logo, which wouldn't help me much in the traffic.
I contacted Garmin and shortly after I got a message telling that I would get a new Nuvi, the Nuvi 2497 LMT.
This is GOOD SERVICE!

So relieved to get a Garmin Nuvi after nightmare time with TomTom

I bought a Garmin Nuvi after TomTom supplied with with two faulty Go 50 units (original one faulty right out of the box - replacement cursed with even more faults!). I plugged the new Garmin in and - oh joy - it did exactly what I needed it to do and has safely navigated me across country on my own without playing up once. What's not to love! This was such a relief to me after the TomTom fiasco. I also notice that everything about it is better: it's just quicker, clearer, cleverer than the TomTom and the build quality just seems better all round, even down to the way it mounts to the windscreen. Thank you Garmin for this great little bit of kit.

Disappointing and confusing

I bought a Garmin Nüvi 55 LM as I was going to England in vacation. It shows, where you are and can help you, when you are completely lost, but we were generally disappointed over the navigation, especially the spoken instructions. Set to Danish language everything was pronounced as Danish names, and we could not recognize ie English street names. M1 was pronounced "m i". "Hold left/right" could mean, that you had to go straight ahead, and "turn left/right" did not mean, that you shold take the road to the left/right, but just hold a little to the left/right. I did not always find the easiest/shortest way, but tried to lead us to the nearest trunk road, even if that meant, that you had to take a longer and more complicated way. It does not replace the old fashioned navigation with a street map.
