I've learned that they only way you can guarantee a professional criminal defense is to hire a well established law firm. These firms have support teams that can do the heavy lifting when researching case law, as well as have a level of internal accountability enforced between the partners.
I made the mistake of hiring an independent lawyer based on positive online reviews. However, I did (eventually) notice that the lawyer was basically winging it in front of the judge (who was not impressed) and also trying to take the path of least resistance. Not knowing any better (its my first, and hopefully last, criminal defense), I accepted an unfavorable judgement. This resulted in the opposing party attempting to extort a lot of money via court enforced restitution - which the DA was very enthusiastic about, despite what was obviously an attempt at fleecing me. Fortunately, my hot shot independent lawyer had to excuse himself from the case due to personal matters, and this gave me the opportunity to hire Wallin and Klarich.
First of all, Wallin/Klarich won over my business because they actually had a partner talk to me about the case and the potential approaches to my restitution defense. This was in sharp contrast to other supposed high performance firms that only had a paralegal give me a pre-prepared spiel and only vaguely talk about how they would defend me.
Once Wallin/Klarich began on my case, I was surprised at the level of professional effort that was being put in, just to prepare for my case. A lot of case law research was done and communicated to me directly by the partner (Matthew Wallin), and I was able to challenge conclusions and receive even more nuanced perspectives. This was in sharp contrast to my previous (independent, highly rated online) lawyer, who did nothing of note. Klarich/Wallin presented their case to the DA - who decided to go back and do more work themselves. Inevitably, the DA called the plaintiff onto the stand - clearly determined to win. Note that the plaintiff/victim is heavily protected by the judge and can virtually say any bullshit on the stand which is immediately taken as truth. My lawyer, partner (Matthew Wallin), carefully navigated through the inconsistencies and other nonsense spewed by the plaintiff while carefully avoiding to appear to be badgering. In the end, the damage really was already done (once you are in a restitution hearing in California, you are screwed), yet Matthew Wallin was able to rescue more than 60% of the potential restitution bill - and believe me, the judge was really reluctant to even do that, but such was the convincing arguments made by Matthew Wallin.
I highly recommend Wallin/Klarich - you will definitely feel that you are getting your money's worth in terms of a professional, highly prepared legal defense. And if you don't hire them, make sure to hire some other established law firm - don't hire independent lawyers (despite what the online reviews say).

This really happened and is a real review.
My experience was with attorney William Felix who had recently been admitted to the CA State Bar in 2022. Despite the outcome, I questioned whether the attorney was confident in handling my case because it did not appear he was given the lack of zealous representation or preparation, just to name a few. Initially, attorney Clinton Chan, who had 18 years experience, was assigned to my case. Then my case was transferred to an attorney with less than 3 years of litigation experience. Had I known this, I would have never proceeded with this attorney and would have asked for representation by the original attorney. Communication was very poor and several calls had to be made before either of the attorney's actually called back. 24 hours before my court hearing, my case was transferred to another attorney, whom I never met, but only spoke to on the phone. Though my case was minor to them, it was major to me and the handling of my case was a clear indication of that. It seems since my case was not a serious felony it did not receive the attention, time, I was not given option to call witnesses, and research that could have been performed was not. I get it, it was not a murder case, where my freedom was at stake, but it was still a case that warranted proper attention. Despite providing detailed information about the facts surrounding my case, the attorney did not articulate it during the hearing. Opposing counsel and the witnesses got away with very unethical behaviors, and very little objections were made. Working in this field, I have seen what it looks like when an attorney is properly prepared and represents their client zealously. I pray I never experience anything like this anymore. To anyone reading this, please please do your research on attorney's that you hire. It is very important and could make or break your case. The only concern after 48hrs was the negative Yelp review. It is important that customers/clients are aware of the service other customers/clients have been subjected to.
