I’d give Passport Health negative stars…

I’d give Passport Health negative stars if I could. Go to Walgreens instead. Here’s why.

If you’re running a travel medicine clinic that stores temperature-sensitive vaccines, having a reliable plan for power outages is fundamental to the business.

We scheduled a yellow fever vaccination appointment for my daughter, who needs it for upcoming international travel. The clinic canceled the appointment because of a power outage and rescheduled us for the following day. Before agreeing to the new appointment, we specifically asked whether there would be any issues. We were assured there would not.

The next day, just before the appointment, we received another call informing us that they could not administer the vaccine after all because they were not confident in the condition of their vaccine inventory following the outage.

So let me get this straight: a travel medicine clinic that specializes in vaccines either had no effective backup power system, no adequate contingency plan, or no idea whether its vaccine inventory was usable when it rescheduled patients and assured them there would be no problem.

The most frustrating part wasn’t the power outage. Shit happens. The problem was the lack of preparedness and the lack of competent communication afterward. We rearranged schedules twice based on information that turned out to be wrong.

Folks should be able to expect a higher level of operational competence from a clinic whose entire purpose is administering and managing vaccines.

This experience left me with very little confidence in the clinic’s planning, communication, or vaccine management procedures. I cannot recommend them.

Walgreens also doesn’t require a $100 deposit to make an appointment like this amateur operation does.

Do not use this clinic

Do not use this clinic. They require you to pay a $140 exam fee, do not disclose their vaccine prices, try to oversell you on stuff you don't need, then charge exorbitant fees for vaccines than are 3-4 times the normal cost. Their business practices are flat out misleading. Avoid at all costs. I will never give them my business again and suggest no one else do it either.

Vaccine pricing

Before booking travel vaccines here, I recommend asking for the exact cost of each vaccine and comparing prices with other providers/clinics.

I assumed my vaccines would be fully reimbursed because I have 100% drug coverage through my health insurance. However, provincial reimbursement guidelines only cover vaccines up to a specified amount, and some vaccines at this company are priced up to 47% higher than those guideline amounts (particularly Japanese encephalitis and rabies).

I did not realize vaccine pricing could vary this significantly! Do your homework!

My experience at Passport Health Clinic…

My experience at Passport Health Clinic was unacceptable, disturbing, and deeply disappointing.

From the beginning of our visit, the female nurse’s attitude was unprofessional and hostile. Her tone and behavior made us feel judged, particularly based on our skin colour and perceived financial status. Instead of focusing on medical care, she repeatedly brought up fees and questioned whether we could afford the service. This was inappropriate, offensive, and had no place in a healthcare setting.

What made the situation far worse was that we had our 9-year-old son with us. The nurse behaved aggressively and confrontationally in front of a child, showing no empathy, sensitivity, or professionalism. We were there solely to obtain travel medicine for our child—not to be treated with disrespect or subjected to an intimidating interaction.

We took time off work and attended this appointment in good faith, expecting respectful and professional medical service. Instead, our time was wasted, and we left feeling stressed, humiliated, and disturbed by the way we were treated.

This experience has completely undermined my trust in this clinic. I will be formally filing a complaint with the Ministry of Health and escalating this matter through the highest level of the complaint system. Individuals who behave in this manner should not be placed in front-end roles, especially in healthcare, where professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and compassion are essential.

I strongly urge management to take this complaint seriously and address the conduct of staff. No family should ever be treated this way when seeking medical care for their child.

Do not recommend, but staff were nice

Staff were very nice but very hard upsell at initial appointment, recommending vaccines we did not need (we did extensive research before going to clinic). They don't take insurance, were very expensive and do not submit vaccine records to the state. Hard to get appointments at the times we needed, as well. I would not recommend them to anyone, unless your employer is paying (and maybe not even then). We would have been much better off going to Costco pharmacy.

If you have health insurance - AVOID

If you have health insurance, avoid Passport Health. And even if you do not have insurance, try your chances at Walgreens or CVS. Without insurance my vaccines were $10 a piece. With insurance, $0! This place preys on people in need of vaccines for imminent travel. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid!!!

What a disappointment

What a disappointment! My wife and I both went and spent over $150 to learn what we already learned by reading the CDC website! What's worse is they do not accept insurance and they will not write prescriptions for vaccinations that insurance will pay for - they will give vaccinations at an overpriced cost! Do not waste your money!

Overpriced scam

Overpriced. You can get the same vaccines elsewhere for significantly less! They misquote prices on the phone. I wonder if I even got a real vaccine. Total SCAM.

Inflated prices, beware of getting ripped off.

I am deeply disappointed with Passport Health’s unethical practices.

Over the phone, I was quoted $80 USD for a yellow fever vaccine. However, at the appointment, the price was inflated to $647, exploiting my urgent travel needs.

This bait-and-switch tactic is predatory and unacceptable. I caution others about Passport Health.

I feel like I just got scammed

I thought this was the only way to get a yellow fever vaccine (not covered by insurance) pre-travel. I paid $522 for a consultation and the vaccine, which felt like an astronomical amount.

Unfortunately, after researching it post-appointment I realized I could have received the vaccine from a local pharmacy for around $225. My fault for not trying that first, and I paid a huge price for it.

The $120+ “consultation” provides zero added value - it’s literally a printout of what you can easily find on the CDC website for travel to a specific country. I did not receive any new useful information.

Trust me, you do NOT need this travel clinic if you have access to Google! I am completely dissatisfied, I wish I could get a refund, and I will tell everyone to avoid this place at all costs.

Very expensive for what they provide

In Toronto, passport health travel clinic charges a fee for an office visit, and then in addition you pay for each vaccine you get.
Passport health charges DOUBLE the amount for the vaccine that was approved by my health insurance company.
You can probably get the same advice about the vaccinations you need by searching the internet, and specialty travel vaccines (i.e. yellow fever) are available in downtown toronto pharamacies, where for a lot less than the amount charged to passport health travel clinic.
