Tree years ago, to now.

Tree years ago, Aetna gave me $600 to buy sports equipment. I regret I did not know it was available also the year before. I purchased a STAR 12 foot inflatable Kayak. I just came in from kayaking on Lake Norman.
I have kayaked, after pumping it up with air for 20 minutes, in Texas, South Dakota, Montana, Colorado, and Missouri. I added $300 and purchased for $900.
Aetna gave me new life. Kayaking rivers and lakes. Soon Aetna will pay 80% of my CPAP equipment. then Aetna will pay for a Pacemaker. The Pacemaker will help me have abetter heart rate for Kayaking.

This should be "zero stars"

This should be "zero stars". I cannot walk, work, drive a car, exercise, control my bladder or bowels. perform daily tasks and am in a constant pain at a level of 9.5 out of 10. Aetna wants me to try physical therapy. I'VE BEEN TO 60 PT SESSIONS ALREADY. I have a screw pressing into a nerve cluster in my back. AETNA'S CEO OVBIOUSLY WANTS TO KEEP HIS $1,000,000 A MONTH SALARY AND SEE ME IN A WHEELCHAIR FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

My experience has not been much…

My experience has not been much different than what has already been written about. In 2018, I had cervical fusion and discectomy at C4-C7. I have new herniations at C2-C3. We have submitted pre auths three times, and have been denied three times. We have been compliant each time with their requests for additional information, I have attempted physical therapy with three sessions, each time I leave in more pain and nerve irritations in my arms and hands than before I went in. This is increasingly frustrating, and is causing such stress and anxiety. People should not have to suffer like this to get good healthcare. I am an RN and have over 30 years of experience in health care, and a nurse surveyor and quite honestly this the worst healthcare that I have ever experienced.

“Who Decides My Healthcare: My Surgeon or My Insurance Company?”

My experience with Aetna has been extremely frustrating.

I was scheduled for shoulder replacement surgery after evaluation by my orthopedic surgeon and completion of multiple pre-surgical clearances. Despite significant pain, joint instability, and imaging showing severe shoulder damage, my surgery was delayed because I was required to complete physical therapy first.

What has been most difficult is the feeling that decisions affecting my health are being made by people who have never examined me, never reviewed my condition firsthand, and do not understand the daily impact this injury has on my life.

The delay has caused significant stress, additional medical appointments, lost time, and uncertainty about when I can finally receive the treatment my surgeon recommended.

I understand that insurance companies have policies and procedures, but patients are not just case numbers. We are people dealing with pain, limitations, and the emotional toll of waiting for needed care.

I hope Aetna takes a closer look at how these decisions affect the real people behind the paperwork.

Aetna is the WORST!

Aetna sends their pre-authorization to Evicore (3rd Party) and I pay Aetna premiums and every test or procedure I have needed - they deny. Then you have to do a peer to peer and they are denied. I looked at Evicore's google reviews and they are all 1 star. Aetna doesn't care about people just the bottom dollar. They could save money by not using Evicore and using the money they pay them to pay claims that people have. I am definitely looking for new health insurance because Aetna is the ABSOLUTE worst!!!!! I spent five hours today on the phone with Aetna and Evicore and they are both blaming the other. TYPICAL - pass the buck.

Beyond horrible

Beyond horrible. I had C3-T3 posterior fusion that got infected and I was in the hospital to the end of February with the washout. My PM Dr. closed in March. They are suddenly requiring a prior authorization for a medication I have been on for YEARS, Methocarbamol. Even knowing that I will be in severe pain, they refuse to override it. And to be clear, their site said it was covered when I bought their insurance. But it was me being in major harm and them overriding a ridiculous policy decision, and they chose policy over people and my pain. Beyond horrible. CSR and "supervisor" didn't even have basic CSR skills (dead air, talked over me, etc) and had zero empathy. They tried to say the words, but it was clear they didn't mean them. I have the call recording.

Terrible Insurance for Elderly

My mother was life-flighted to the hospital. We were told throughout the process that her next step was a swing-bed program. Once Aetna denied her despite the doctor's recommendation, this service was denied. Once the service was denied, the hospital said that if she had a different insurance, she would not need these preapprovals, which often require appeals. We quickly found the hospital pushing "progress" due to the insurance. We were home on 5/15/2026, and my mom couldn't get out of the chair. My mother does not live with me, and if she falls, my father would not be able to help her up.

Absolutely terrible

Absolutely terrible, refused to cover anything and left me with the bill.

Attempting to fight a claim or cancel their policies was terrible as well; I was transferred to well over 5 "different" departments because they could not help me, but the other departments surely would be able to.

My employer just changed to AETNA

My employer just changed to AETNA, big mistake, they have no customer service, they have a chat window that has a rude approach to the problem you have. They just want to repeat things you already know, tell you they don't know how to help me and to call during business hours, of which I was doing.

Abysmal customer service

I’ve now had multiple frustrating experiences with Meritain Health (an Aetna company) customer service, not just one isolated incident. Resolving issues over the phone has been extremely difficult due to a combination of poor call quality, communication barriers, and inconsistent information from representatives.

This most recent issue resulted in delayed claim processing and a massive medical bill with a near-immediate payment deadline from my provider. Trying to sort out urgent insurance problems is stressful enough without struggling just to clearly communicate with customer service.

Health insurance companies should ensure their support systems are accessible, understandable, and capable of handling time-sensitive billing issues effectively.

I feel very unfortunate that my employer does not offer BCBS and Aetna is the only major insurance they provide. It can't get worse than Aetna. I have had different plans of both and every Aetna is unbelievably bad and frustrating. The customer service is also very useless. Avoid them if you can.

Aetna Medicare costs

Aetna will never share your total cost about anything, the MEDICARE plans are absolutely horrible, with HUGE DEDUCTIBLES on everything. It's May, May 5th to be exact, my medication deductible is $2000, I just had cataract surgery, my share $1000, and the ambulatory surgery center is $1000 deductible
