Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 3,576 reviews, most reviewers were somewhat happy with their experience overall. Many customers appreciate the extensive DNA database and record collection, finding the DNA results to be very good and helpful for discovering family history and connections. Reviewers also value the platform's ability to facilitate finding relatives and exploring family trees, with some praising the pro tools for managing large trees and the hints for providing documented evidence. The website is generally considered easy to navigate, and the memory gallery albums are highlighted as a valuable feature for storytelling and preserving roots. However, a significant number of people express dissatisfaction with the pricing and subscription model, noting that costs are increasing and many historical records are freely available elsewhere. There are frequent complaints about the lack of a chromosome browser, which many users consider essential for serious research and a feature that has been requested for years. Some customers report issues with the website's functionality, including lagging, poor loading, and incorrect data displays, as well as problems with the DNA sample submission process and receiving results. Additionally, some users find the platform's handling of complex family structures and the constant upselling for features to be frustrating.

So Ancestry has done it again

So Ancestry has done it again. Used to be when you brought up a vertical tree view the tab at the top of the page would say "Vertical tree View". For a horizontal view it would say "Horizontal Tree View". Now it says "Horizontal Tree View" no matter what view you are in. Sure would be nice if their IT folks would stop mucking with things that work.

Ancestry Matters

Ancestry has primary sources from the 1870 census, marriage certificates and death certificates of my Pulliam and Overby ancestors. It is a very emotional experience, and like most Black Americans I have to pivot. I am fairly certain my South-Side Virginia great mothers and great fathers were here during Colonial America.

I can find what I'm looking for, directly for the most of the time. If not directly, I can usually piece together enough facts to figure things out. I've tried others and I haven't been able to have the same results.

Recently Disappointed

I have used ancestry for many years and been generally happy with it. However, I have recently had trouble attaching documents and pics to my tree. Also, you used to show all hints for a person at once--if hints exist, you should show them on the profile all at once and not make me keep going back to that profile to look at yet another repetitive link.

Large autosomal database but paywalls and missing features

Ancestry has the largest autosomal database, which is clear advantage. However most of the users and documents are for the USA and the broader Anglo-Saxon world. For example for people from Eastern Europe there are very few matches and virtually no records.

There tools are usually good however a lot of features that are free on every other competing platform, here are paid. For example shared matches.
Also there subscription model is quite expensive and without a subscription most of the features are restricted.

Another big issue is the lack of chromosome browser (segment data) which is intentionally hidden.
This is a huge drawback to any serious genetic genealogist. Basically one should ask every match to upload their kit for example to gedmatch to check the common segments. And this is not possible for matches that do not respond, which is actually the vast majority of them. Also they do not allow autosomal uploads from other companies.

Instead they are adding gimmicky features which I doubt anyone actually requested.

Hello Давид, thank you for your detailed feedback. We're glad our large database is an advantage for you, but we hear your frustrations regarding Eastern European records and genetic tools like a chromosome browser. We are constantly expanding our international records and appreciate your insights on what serious genealogists need.

OVER RATED

First, you have to pay to see other people's family tree so you end up paying but then it turns out you still may not be able to see their trees due to them having it private. Then they give you results of your parents like Parent 1 and Parent 2. They DO NOT tell you what side is your dad and which is your moms. Last, then you try to message your family members that either have not been active on Ancestry for years OR your family member will not reply to you

Hi David. We understand how frustrating these hurdles can be when you are looking for clear answers about your family history.

While a membership is required to view the records and trees linked to other accounts, members do have the right to keep their family trees private if they choose. When you encounter a private tree, your best option is to send a message to the owner to request access. Because some users only log in occasionally, responses can sometimes take a long time, but we encourage you to keep reaching out to other matches who may have public trees or be more active.

Regarding your DNA results, our technology can successfully separate your DNA into two distinct parental sides, but because we do not have your parents' actual DNA samples, the system cannot automatically know which side belongs to your mother and which belongs to your father. This is why they are labeled as Parent 1 and Parent 2. You can easily determine which is which by looking at the DNA matches listed under each parent—once you recognize a cousin from your mother's or father's side, you can manually update the Parent 1 and Parent 2 labels to Maternal and Paternal to permanently fix it for your account.

Clustering - Very Good to Great

Clustering Tool is very good ... But could be GREAT!
Next step should be to use a defined group and cluster from it. Just prompt from which group and run clustering analysis from there - moving tool from very good to GREAT!

Hi Robert. We are so glad you find our SideView technology useful, however we are sorry for any frustration that may have been caused.

When Ancestry determines whether a match is on your paternal or maternal side, our system uses a process that splits your DNA into your parents' halves without needing your parents to take a DNA test. It does this by analyzing how your matches cluster together. However, things can get a bit tricky and less accurate if your parents share a very similar ethnic background, if you have a lot of distant cousins who are related to both sides of your family tree, or if there is endogamy (intermarriage within a closed community over generations) in your heritage.

We are constantly refining this technology to make the labels more precise. In the meantime, you can always manually edit and override the maternal or paternal label on any match yourself once you have confirmed the connection through your own family tree research!

Hi Hilton. We completely understand your perspective, and you have hit on an important point about how our platform works.

While Ancestry provides the largest consumer DNA database and over 40 billion historical records to make us a leader in family history, our automated green leaf hints are powered by algorithms that are meant to be a starting point rather than absolute facts. These hints scan names, dates, and other members' public trees, which means if another user makes an error, that mistake can unfortunately be suggested to you as a hint. We always recommend treating our hints as clues to be verified with official source documents before accepting them into your tree. You can also use the ignore button on inaccurate suggestions, which actively helps train our system to provide you with much better, more accurate recommendations moving forward.
