One star is too much
One star is too much. I am a loyal customer, rent a car once a month in average. Last time I had a disagreement about the bill and I have send a friendly email where I explained why I disagreed. No reply, after one week a friendly reminder. This was two weeks ago. Up till now no reply. This is how they treat loyal customers. Now they lost one. I can rent a car everywhere.
AVIS, Calgary Airport - Bad service and still waiting for money return!
AVIS, Calgary Airport - Bad service and still waiting for money return!
And lack of signage, so you have to guess where to go.
After experiencing incredible service from AVIS at Halifax International Airport, we encountered the exact opposite at Calgary Airport. We had to wait an hour and a half just to get the GPS working, 3 people came, nobody could make it work. the help didn't come from AVIS, but ultimately through the emergency line provided by our travel agency My Planet. When we contacted the office, they said they couldn't give us a different car—though we could upgrade—and the only available vehicle cost an extra CAD 40 per day for 18 days.
Upon returning home, we noticed a charge of DKK 1,086 on our Mastercard. They had charged us for an additional driver, even though that was already included in the agreement. Our travel agency has intervened regarding this matter, and the money is supposed to be refunded. We have now been waiting for it for two months.
Would we risk using AVIS again? Perhaps, but not at Calgary Airport.
WORST SERVICE EVER
I have rented the car for one day from september 6 to september 7, i´ve returned the car on time then only to get charged for a 48hr rental instead of 24hr as my reservation states. I have raised case under the unique reference number: 1004981D.
IT HAS BEEN 3 WEEKS!! not a single reply. I have tried to calling the phone numbers many times, all I get is that the department Im trying to reach is closed at that time and believe me I have called different days different hours, it seems they are never open!
THIS IS SIMPLE INSANE! IF SOMEONE IS READING THIS, DO NOT RENT A CAR WITH AVIS !
Do not rent here!!
I strongly recommend avoiding Avis, especially Avis Billund Airport.
My rental itself started normally. I rented an Audi Q3 from Billund Airport, Denmark, from 7–9 August 2026. The staff at the airport were friendly and the car was fine.
The problems started after I returned the car.
I was suddenly contacted by Van Ameyde regarding alleged damage to the left rear quarter panel and the right-front alloy wheel. The potential liability was up to DKK 15,000 (around €2,000), despite the actual damage calculation initially being around DKK 5,000.
I immediately disputed the claim and provided the photographs and information I had. I responded promptly every time they contacted me. What followed was weeks of emails, automated responses, repeated requests for information and very little actual communication about the questions I was asking.
I even tried calling and waited around 30 minutes without being able to speak to someone who could properly deal with the case.
The situation became even more frustrating because the damage claim itself changed during the process. The alleged wheel damage disappeared from the correspondence and later reappeared without a clear explanation.
Interestingly, it was only after I posted a negative Google review that a supervisor from the Billund Airport location contacted me personally to look into the situation.
After checking their records, he confirmed to me in writing:
“There is no documentation for the damages from the rental before yours.”
He also told me that the wheel-rim damage seemed “quite strange.”
Despite this, Avis’s Damage Claims Department continued to hold me responsible.
Their final decision stated that the requested documentation had not been provided. This is particularly frustrating because the relevant photographs had already been sent in my previous email correspondence.
So after weeks of trying to resolve this directly, I was essentially told: the damage wasn’t documented before your rental, you signed the rental agreement, therefore you are responsible.
I have now submitted the dispute to the European Car Rental Conciliation Service (ECRCS) for independent review.
This experience has completely destroyed my trust in Avis. The issue is not simply the potential charge. It is the way the entire dispute was handled: the repeated generic responses, the difficulty getting answers, the changing damage claim, the lack of pre-rental documentation and the fact that evidence I had already provided was later treated as if it had never been provided.
My advice to anyone considering Avis: DON’T.
ZERO STARS if I could.
ZERO STARS if I could.
I rented from Avis Billund, Denmark for five days during my holiday. Despite finding cheaper options elsewhere, I chose Avis because I had rented with them before and wanted to remain a loyal customer. Unfortunately, I now seriously regret that decision.
There have been several major issues with this rental:
* Unexpected transactions: Since returning the vehicle, I have had several small amounts taken from my account without any communication explaining what they are for. I am now left wondering exactly what I have already been charged for.
* A damage claim I dispute: Avis contacted me claiming that a scratch had been found on the rear side of the vehicle and that I am liable for approximately $2,000 AUD in damages. Thankfully, I took photos and videos of the vehicle before driving away, which I believe show that the damage was already present.
* No response whatsoever: I have emailed Avis approximately five times using different contact addresses, submitted their online damage/contact form with all of my evidence, and contacted the relevant damage department twice. I have received no meaningful response for almost two weeks.
* Going around in circles: I have also called the phone number provided. The staff at the rental desk told me to contact the damage department, but when I call that number, an automated message says the phone line has been cancelled and that they only deal with enquiries by email — the exact email address I have already contacted multiple times without receiving a response.
* Fuel issue: When I returned the vehicle, I filled it up at the petrol station immediately around the corner from the Avis rental location. The pump clicked off, but the fuel gauge in the car did not show as full. I actually got back out and attempted to fill it again, and it clicked off immediately. I even commented to my partner at the time that the gauge still didn’t appear to be showing full. We kept the receipt and took a photo of the fuel gauge. Given the other issues, this situation has also left me questioning whether the fuel charge process is being handled correctly.
What makes this even more frustrating is that I have evidence, including pre-rental photos/videos and the fuel receipt, yet I cannot get anyone from Avis to actually respond and review it.
I have since looked at other reviews and unfortunately found similar complaints from customers regarding unexpected charges, disputed damage claims and a complete lack of communication.
I understand that rental companies need to charge customers when there is genuine damage or additional costs. What I find completely unacceptable is being charged or potentially charged thousands of dollars while being given no reasonable way to communicate, dispute the claim or even establish exactly what the additional transactions are for.
I have been a loyal Avis customer and expected much better.
Absolutely disgraceful customer service. I would give zero stars if that were an option.
I sincerely hope other customers think twice before renting from Avis Billund and, most importantly, take detailed photos and videos before and after their rental and keep every receipt.
scammers
scammers. Found an invisible hair scratch that you could only find if you new it was there. I wonder how many times they have already charged customers for this one. I rent a lot of cars, never been treated like this
BE AWARE!
Since 1 star is the lowest available option I had to choose it.. I would actually preferr to give them zero stars..
Avis at Kolding airport charged us for damages to our rented car eventhough nothing happend to the car while we used it. After an extremely detailed visual check, done by a Avis-representative; when we returned the car, even under the car, they pointed out several damages that supposedly was not there 2 days earlier. And since we could not prove otherwise with detailed photos as evidence from when we picked up the car it came down to a word against word situation, and we ended up being charged 1700 EURO`s for the previous damages.
Make sure you bring an Avis-representative with you to inspect the car before you leave their parking lot. Remark even minor scraps or bumps to be absolutely sure that they can`t make unreasonable claims afterwords. Take photos of the car and keep as proof just to be safe!

Very disappointing experience with Avis – vehicle in unacceptable condition and no customer service response
We rented a 9-seater vehicle from Avis at Rome Airport.
Unfortunately, the condition of the vehicle was far below what we would reasonably expect from Avis. The interior appeared unfinished, with no proper trim on the sides or floor. There were no air-conditioning vents or speakers for the rear passengers, and the air conditioning did not function properly. The vehicle also had numerous visible exterior damages.
We immediately contacted Avis Customer Service and provided photographs documenting the condition of the vehicle. Avis initially informed us that a vehicle exchange might be possible and that our case had been forwarded to their specialised customer service team.
However, despite several follow-up messages to both the Italian and Danish Avis offices, we received no substantive response and no practical assistance during our rental period.
We ultimately completed our rental with the vehicle we had been given.
The most disappointing part of the experience was not only the condition of the vehicle, but also the complete lack of follow-up from Avis after we had reported the problems. We expected a company of Avis’ reputation to take the complaint seriously and offer an appropriate solution.
We would therefore not recommend Avis based on this experience, and we are still awaiting a response regarding our request for compensation.
rented a car at Sacramento Airport(AVIS)
rented a car at Sacramento Airport. I had a lot of trouble because they wouldn't accept my Mastercard credit card; I had to call my bank, and they said there was an issue with Avis's system. On the final attempt, the system accepted my daughter's Mastercard debit card. I agreed to a full tank of gas—which was a bad deal, but I had said yes to it. However, I later discovered that they had added all sorts of insurance and roadside assistance WITHOUT asking me first. I consider this a scam; I complained to Avis, and while they apologized, they claimed it was my own fault. I am certain this was a deliberate move by the Avis employee, who likely gets a bonus for increased sales. I won't be booking with Avis again, and I would advise everyone else against it. They deliberately scam their customers. After a 19-hour journey and card issues, you aren't always up for reading the fine print, but a company with a good reputation would inform its customers about upsells. What a letdown—never again with Avis, the scammers!
We picked up the car and there was some…
We picked up the car and there was some damage to the front rightside wing, which was markt in the contract. The car was parked in a pretty dark spot of the garage at Kastrup , but the car was clean when we walked around for possible additional damage but obviously did not see the black tyres / rims. We trusted Budget/ Avis. We hardly used the car during our rental period, only going from point to point and never parked in town or anywhere near curbs. When we returned the car there was a couple in front of us apparantly disputing some damage to their car and the employee told us that we where okay to leave and hand him the keys. The next day we received a damage report with damage to both front rims and a ripped tyre, which we never caused! We would not return a car with damage like that without us reporting and taking our own pics. Clearly this is a case of pre-existing damage Budget passes on to the next customer or maybe even more... This is very bad practice, particularly parking the car in a dark area, sothat people just cannot see the damage. Do you really expect customers to go around the car with a light or lay on the ground to take pics.?Reading various other reviews it appears we are not the only onces experiencing this.....
Charged me three times the amount on…
Charged me three times the amount on the contract due to mistakes by the agent. Once I noticed it, I got in contact with customer service but ofcourse they are not able to help, so the only solution they offered was for me to dispute the charges with the bank, despite them admitting to having charged me wrong amount. Disputes with the bank takes 90 days to resolve. So, essentially, Avis has now stolen ~10 kDKK from me and is refusing to pay it back, and I just have to live with maybe getting them back in 90 days. I will wait a couple of days to see if they react to this, or I will submit a claim to the consumer ombudsman
If I could I have given them 0 stars
If I could I have given them 0 stars! First they overcharged me 72 euro(I got them back after 3 weeks).
And then over a month after I have left Portugal they charge me 90 euro again without any mail or why? What the f!!!! I can’t call Avis Portugal. Im not gonna use Avis anymore!! Stay away!!!! Avis please contact me!!!
Never the car class reserved
This is the 3rd time I tried to rent a premium full size car by AVIS, and the 3rd time the reservation was changed to smaller a smaller car. first 2 times in Germany and now in Denmark
First time we didnt know utill we were there, second time they called us just 2 hours before pickup. This time i recieved an email 4 days ahead
Really bad experience.
Really bad experience.
We were insulted by welcome staff and treated like worthless people.
Upon bringing the car back, they pretend we had made a very small (3,5 cm) damage to the wheel, which we didn't (we could not check the car upon pick up because it was in a dark parking area) and they are now charging us 500 euros!!
To anyone renting a car, apply the avis / budget staff own advice: "next time, if you are not happy, do rent somewhere else"
Outrageous!!!
Illegal to drive the car that was booked!
On pick-up of car (in Nov in a snowy Denmark) I was told car did not have winter tyres and that it was illegal to drive a car in ice or snow without them!
So they rented a car to me that could not legally be driven! Seemingly, they saw this as an optional extra (for which you have to book in advance). Hidden in the small print it did mention the requirement for winter tyres and a cost, but there was no indication of such advance booking requirement.
Besides, I don't think that the car being drivable is an optional extra! Maybe I should have checked whether the steering wheel was included too!
Never use AVIS if you are going to rent…
Never use AVIS if you are going to rent a car.
It was the worst service I have experienced in a long time.
It took me over 40 minutes to get a car.
When I returned the car they tried to make me pay €130 for an insurance that I had never signed for.
They finally chose to accept but they still deducted the money from my account and more. I had paid for the rental from home but they deducted an additional €350.
And I can't get in touch with anyone.
Scammed and Cheated
Where do I start....
Arriving in Pisa airport to collect my car on the 13rd of October 2025 - and returning 6 days later!
This is for sure the worst experience ever with a car rental agency, what a pity I did not read the reviews before.....!
I am an Avis Preferred Plus customer, whatever that means. Nonetheless I was scammed at the counter by the clerk - who apparently charged me for an insurance (which I already had from my Mastercard Platinum) and additional charges, which amounted to more than what I actually paid for the car for the 6 days I had it..... What the f'''''k
DO NOT USE AVIS - there are so many others to choose from - who actually care about their customers. Who does not cheat them - and who is authentic and serviceminded....!
I will never use Avis again for sure.
Poor car condition and poor service followed by poor compensation
I rented a car from 4/8/2025 to 30/8/2025. When I wanted to pick up the car, it took more than an hour to be serviced, not because they didn't have staff enough, but because the staff were too busy having fun with each other. When I finally got the car, they had given me a Kia Sportage PHEV, which I was happy about since the petrol in Denmark is very expensive (>AU$ 3.00/liter) until I discovered that they hadn't provided a charging cable and I couldn't get one. The car itself was very dirty both inside and out. When I returned the car, it took more than 15 minutes for the service agent to establish that I hadn't caused any damage to the car and then he "accused" me of having driven too much in the car. This came about because the contract stated that the car had only done 690 km when I picked it up (even if it had done more than 101,000 km) and now the clock showed 103,000 km. I had to explain this to the service agent and also point out that I had free km according to my contract - who would apart from that be able to drive more than 100,000 km in less than 4 weeks. Well, the service agent finally let me go, so that I could catch my flight home to Australia.
Afterwards, I filed a complaint to Avis, and a few days later I received this reply:
"Dear Paw,
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your Customer Service experience. We appreciate your feedback since it helps us improve our service and your rental experience.
I'm sorry to hear there was a long waiting time at pick up. Waiting time is to be expected when you travel during the peak season of Summer, such as with hotels and flights, but I do agree that one hour wating time is long, and I apologise. For the inconvenience I would like to offer you a 230 Euro discount voucher: (attached voucher)
For the inconvenience of the car, I would also like to offer you a free upgrade voucher: (attached voucher)
When I checked the vouchers, it was NOT a 230 Euro voucher, but a 20 Euro voucher.
Questioning this, the Manager claimed that it was a typo, and she wasn't willing to stand by her initial promise!
What a poor experience! Never Avis again!
They're pirates
They're pirates! I rented a car from Avis at Copenhagen Airport, and they haven't returned my €300 deposit for alleged damage to the car, even though it wasn't defective. I should opt for a more reputable company.
I booked a car with Avis for 1–4 August…
I booked a car with Avis for 1–4 August 2025. The original price was DKK 2,662.14.
Within 48 hours I modified the booking online, removing extras, and the new price was DKK 2,036.10.
Despite Avis’ own policy stating “Free cancellation/full refunds on Pay Online bookings up to 48 hours before rental begins”, I was refused the refund of DKK 626.04.
This condition is not shown during booking or modification, only hidden in a 28-page PDF buried deep on their website.
I find this misleading and contrary to EU consumer rights and Danish marketing rules. I am still waiting for a refund and will escalate to the Danish Consumer Council if not resolved.
Very disappointing experience — I expected better transparency and customer care from an international company like Avis.
