They continuously move the goal posts on claims and make you jump through different hoops every time before repeatedly denying them and delaying payment. Be prepared to do more admin work than they do... See more

Use any other provider
Outdated website and horrible phone service make communication nearly impossible. If you are looking for travel assistance, they use Canassistance as their claims partner. A notoriously shady company with similarly terrible communication practices and absurdly long processing times.
If I could give it a 0 I would
If I could give it a 0 I would. Worst company to deal with when trying to get your STD claim. Had to go off work for stress leave. For context, was harassed at work, employer did nothing, protected the harasser abd consequently I had to take the employer to Human Rights where they were found at fault across tge board. The experience left me drained mentally, physically and emotionally. Could not even begin to describe it. I finally made the decision to try to take care of myself to get help. My drs all supported this and Blue Cross was sent all they needed for the claim. Two month waiting. They told me they needed to send my claim to a 3rd party physician to get an opinion...never spoke to me at all. Long story short...I get declined for my claim. Disgusted by the handling of this....especially when I know of multiple fellow employee who had to take a stress leave for much less than I did and got approved. You pay into this benefit for 12 years (and not cheap)....they drag their feet for 2month...stating themself that they aren't doctors but proceed to deny a claim that showed all evidence that a person needed to be off for mental health due to their own work environment. I have never been more disgusted by a company or how they treat mental health issues. Essentially they told me I needed to be completely disabled to be approved...even though, as I said...I know others were approved for much less. Truly worst insurance company out there.
If I could give a zero I would
If I could give a zero I would. Extremely frustrating and unnecessarily complicated insurance experience. I’ve used multiple insurance providers over the years, and Blue Cross is by far the one I’ve been least satisfied with.
The app is cumbersome and repeatedly asks for information that feels redundant, making even simple claims unnecessarily time-consuming. What should be a straightforward reimbursement process becomes an administrative chore.
Even more frustrating is the requirement for a prescription or provider documentation for basic wellness services such as massage therapy. Other insurers I’ve used, including Manulife, don’t require this for comparable claims. Requiring people to obtain a prescription from a primary care provider for routine wellness services adds unnecessary administrative work to a healthcare system that is already under significant strain.
The account setup is also unnecessarily restrictive. My spouse and I can’t even maintain separate accounts to submit our own benefits claims, which makes managing our individual expenses far more difficult than it needs to be.
After dealing with several insurance companies, I can confidently say this has been the most cumbersome and frustrating benefits experience I’ve had. Blue Cross seems to have designed a system that creates barriers and paperwork where a simple claims process should exist.
If you’re looking for an insurance provider that makes submitting routine benefits claims easy and convenient, my experience with Blue Cross has been the opposite. They should listen to all these bad reviews and update their policies and their crappy app.
Very poor service
An outdated website, that was never great, long telephone wait times and just generally poor, slow service.
Website crashes after you have entered your data, losing it all. Was suggested, after contacting tech support, that I should not enter more than 1-2 items at a time. Have had experience with other carriers and it has never been as poor as this.
Horrible
Horrible, they couldn't see my claims for months, had to delete my entire account and give me a new one. Please use a different healthcare company
Worst services in canada
The employees are not trained and knowledgeable. Giving false information to the client. Even they are decline the claims without seeing properly or contacting the client for further clarification.
Not able to help
I have been calling them and letting them know that I haven’t got my health spending back, they kept telling me to call my bank. So I called my bank, my bank didn’t receive anything. This back and forth happened twice. And they couldn’t help me or find an answer. Been waiting 11 business days now.
Pay out my behind for benefits that are…
Pay out my behind for benefits that are never covered. Such a joke.
Claims Processing Time
Some great customer service reps but processing time for claims is worse than ever, they need to hire more administrative personnel to deal with this. As of today, July 17/26, they are processing medical claims as of May 25/26. NOT acceptable. The response is they are handling a higher than normal volume of claims - this has been the Blue Cross response for several months now. Additionally, when they mail my refund ("not possible to direct deposit because I have an older policy") it takes minimum 10 business days to travel from Quebec to Ontario. Canada Post??
Blue Cross service has seriously deteriorated over the last few years, my premiums increase every year, the amount I am reimbursed on my claims has not increased in 10 years. I cannot currently recommend Blue Cross to anyone looking for health insurance coverage.
Had an accident in US while on vacation…
Had an accident in US while on vacation and had Ontario Blue Cross. US hospital kept sending me the invoices because Ontario Blue Cross was not paying them. I waited for over an hour on the phone more than once to try to talk to somebody from Ontario Blue Cross with no success. Thank goodness the US hospital helped me out. I will never use Ontario Blue Cross again. I came home broken and then had to deal with that mess.
Can't even enter my info correctly
Got problems with them from the very beginning. My personal information wasn't correctly entered. Still waiting for them to fix it. Until then can't use the benefits...
Staff are going to hang up on you
This company deserves a zero star review, but since that’s not an option here we are not only will this company just avoid taking the money so that they can then cause you to have late fees on your payment when you call to find out why they aren’t taking the money they’ll give you the runaround and tell you that they can’t get you that information for at least 10 days past when your premium was due and when you do call first you’re gonna have to get hung up on a minimum of 3 to 5 times before you’ll even get to actually talk to someone who will even make a slight attempt at seeming helpful. When I called to cancel my premium because I had found a better company I was hung up on four separate times by the same person who never once gave me their name so it’s not like I can even list them in this actual complaint, the staff are horrible. They will hang up on you. This company is not useful.
If I could give zero or minus
If I could give zero or minus, I would. Absolute THE worst insurance company out there. Extremely poor customer service and the slowest process ever. Terrible and unacceptable service. Horrible experience with them . Stay away from this company.
Customer service is terrible…
Customer service is absolutely terrible. The employees are downright RUDE. Wait times on the phone are so long. Wait times for payment of claims are ridiculous - one to two months sometimes. Canada life pays claims in 1 day. Worst company imaginable, I don't know how they stay in business.
As of june 1st 2026 customer.service…
As of june 1st 2026 customer.service has shared they are 4 weeks average to.process claims upon submission.
In addition to the lengthy delays. If you want to file a complaint with senior managememt it takes 3-5 business days for them to respond.
This level of operations in customer experience ia unheard of. Do not trust this company for good service.
I would rate a 0 if I could
Avoid this company.
Worst insurance provider I've dealt with. The sales rep made it sound easy. Well signing up and paying them was easy. Filing a claim is where it falls apart.
I've been a Type 2 diabetic for 20+ years, on insulin and other medications. Here's how my claims went:
Jardiance claim - Rejected. I've been on it for three years and my previous insurer covered it without issue. This company demands "special approval" via a form my doctor charges $50 to complete. Still waiting.
Dexcom (diabetic supplies) claim - Rejected. They want proof of one year of insulin dependency. A current prescription isn't enough now I'm chasing pharmacy records just to get supplies I obviously need.
A prescription from a treating physician should be enough. Instead, every claim is paperwork, phone calls, and out-of-pocket fees to access coverage I already pay for.
So far
$350 to the insurance company
$500 worth of medication and supplies
$50 to a doctor for a form for the insurance company
$0 from Blue Cross for my claims
Almost criminal!
Other providers may cost a bit more. Pay it, it's worth every cent.
Bluecross Travel insurance coverage :
Bluecross Travel insurance coverage :
Flight Delay Service includes:
access to a hotel room and $50 per person allowance, up to a maximum of $200 per policy for delays of 6 hours or more
My experience resulted in no any money from Bluecross after I claimed!!! The reason is that the delayed flight should be 6 hours or more delay in the same day, not delayed to the next day. Unfortunately, my flight was delayed to the next day.
In the regulation from Bluecross there is no this date limitation! It is cheating.
It took more than one hour for me to wait for someone to talk to on phone.
Blue Cross and Bad Business Practices
I am using my wife's email to post this review after my spouse reviews it... Don MacAlpine, Regina, Saskatchewan... Fed up with the bad service from this business (a move to a new, fancy building that was followed with repetitive delays of refund applications (did NOT happen before this move) and changes in policy policies (e.g.-my wife has both extreme hearing and COPD issues. While she had to fight for refund for two hearing aids in the past, she was outright denied this benefit AFTER paying for 60 YEARS into this business. Additionally, two years ago, she was paid for monthly oxygen use and is now denied anything but 'equipment fees'. Therefore, on March 30, 2026, (we) I walked into the local office and informed them that we were cancelling the Blue Cross coverage AND were blocking the April payment. We moved to the local GMS office where service was friendlier and more personable. Today, April 21, 2026, we received a nasty letter from the SAME Blue Cross office demanding that we pay the April 1 'fee' AND an NSF charge of $20. AND informing us that they would 'try again' to remove those funds INCLUDING THEIR NSF charge. This is NOT the only business that we have experienced showing this kind of arrogant behaviour. We are currently fighting with the local Natural Gas supplier on a similar issue, BUT this is UNACCEPTABLE behaviour from a corporation that claims to be for human health but does everything to create needless stress for its clients. Will Blue Cross change its behaviour??? Too late for us... they are GONE out of our lives AND we would NOT recommend this company to any other person.
I used Blue Cross travel insurance for Annual 30 Day Travel Policy
I used Blue Cross travel insurance for an annual policy. While vacationing in Turks and Caicos I experienced a medical issue that could not be treated on island and was advised to get back to Canada ASAP! I could not fly commercial so I arranged a Medivac to Toronto.
Blue Cross uses a 3rd party to manage claims called CanAssistance. It was easy to open a claim but follow up was very difficult with long wait times on the telephone and little information when you did get through.
The claim situation started in January and was not resolved until April with pretty much 100% of my costs reimbursed. (I was out of pocket $80k for 3 months) I had heard so many Travel insurance "Horror Stories" that I was expecting to have to hire a lawyer and fight for my claim. This did not happen. IT JUST TOOK A LONG TIME TO RESOLVE.
In hindsight, I was perhaps too impatient. The process was quite stressful but Blue Cross covered my serious claim and I would use them again!
