Disappointing Stay That Falls Well Short of Five-Star Expectations
We stayed at Centara Mui Ne to celebrate my wife’s birthday and, unfortunately, our experience fell well short of what we’d expect from a property marketed as a five-star resort. This was especially disappointing given our previous excellent experiences with the Centara brand.
Before arriving, we advised the hotel that this stay was for my wife’s birthday and that we are both lacto-vegetarians. We also requested an early check-in as Centara members. Despite this, our room was not ready until after 2:30 pm, reception was chaotic, and there was little visible management presence.
One of the highlights of our arrival was Mr. Bao, who kindly took the time to show us around the resort before escorting us to our room. His professionalism and initiative were greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately, our room had not been properly checked before arrival, as the safe was locked due to flat batteries. Although resolved quickly, it reflected a lack of attention to detail. The room itself was comfortable enough, but the resort generally felt tired, with poorly maintained grounds, dirty outdoor furniture and an overall standard that did not reflect a five-star property. We also experienced almost no water pressure on our first morning.
Dining was initially the biggest disappointment. Despite informing the hotel of our dietary requirements before arrival, vegetarian options at breakfast and lunch were extremely limited and we repeatedly had to explain our needs. However, once the restaurant team understood our preferences, they went out of their way to help.
Special recognition goes to Miss Thi, who consistently took ownership of our dietary requirements, Miss Thuy at the barista station for her warm and attentive service, Miss Moon for her hospitality during breakfast and lunch, and Miss Van, who helped make my wife’s birthday dinner special. Our final dinner was excellent, complete with a surprise birthday cake and a thoughtful birthday announcement from the live band, creating a memorable end to our stay.
The hotel’s guest messaging app and call centre also deserve praise. Responses were always prompt and efficient. Unfortunately, there often seemed to be a disconnect between what was communicated through the app and what was delivered on the ground, reinforcing our impression that the frontline teams were doing their best but lacked management support.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment was that, despite the hotel knowing this was a birthday celebration and despite several service issues, no member of senior management ever approached us to acknowledge the occasion or ask about our experience.
Our request for a late checkout was accommodated, which we appreciated.
Overall, this resort has the foundations of an excellent destination, thanks to its caring and dedicated staff. Unfortunately, they appear to be let down by inconsistent management, poor operational oversight and a lack of attention to detail. We left with genuine appreciation for the people who looked after us, but disappointed that the overall experience never lived up to the standards we associate with the Centara brand.
