Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 294 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people found the platform frustrating due to issues with cheaters, unfair matchmaking, and a general lack of support for new players, making it difficult to enjoy the game. Customers frequently reported problems with the rating system, suspicious games, and accounts playing far above their stated level, leading to a sense of unfair competition. The customer service was widely criticized as non-existent or unhelpful, with many feeling that the company does not care about its users or their concerns. Reviewers also expressed dissatisfaction with the subscription model, citing issues with managing memberships or trials. However, some customers also noted that the platform has a lot to offer in terms of game variants, puzzles, and forums, and that it can be a good resource for learning more about chess. A few other people also felt that the website is well-designed and that the features generally work, despite the reported issues.

Site filled with selective Hybrid cheaters without resolution

Every time I start winning a game, the other player makes suspicious critical moves and flips the game into their own victory or checkmate. The first few months I looked internally at me, but over time the evidence is clear, and it’s obvious, this site is filled with so many hybrid cheaters that selectively cheat in critical positions or when they’re losing and upset about it. I’m hundreds below my rating and I’m not even upset about it, it’s just disgusting. Leaving my two accounts and lessons of 3 years because it’s so demoralizing.

I despise that chess.com can’t use AI somehow by now to ban hybrid selective cheating immediately instead of a lazy sneaky hidden “fair policy” team that isn’t transparent or consistent. Do better

Paid account disappeared without explanation

I had a paid yearly Diamond membership on Chess.com, and after contacting support about creating a fresh account and transferring my membership/account-related data, my account suddenly disappeared without any clear explanation.

It does not appear to be closed or banned — it simply looks like it no longer exists. When I tried logging in with my email, I was asked to create a brand-new account.

This is extremely concerning because I lost access to a paid service I purchased, along with personal account data, blogs, friends list, profile history, and other content that had value to me.

I waited around 4–5 days for a response from support before this happened, and after contacting support again from a new account, I still have not received a meaningful answer after two days.

This situation has caused serious stress and has negatively affected my mental health. It also makes me question the safety and reliability of the Chess.com platform. If a paid user’s account and data can disappear without warning, explanation, restoration, refund, or timely support response, that is a major trust issue.

From a customer perspective, this feels unfair and potentially deceptive, because I paid for a service and then lost access to both the service and my account data without explanation.

Until Chess.com resolves this properly, I cannot recommend trusting the platform with paid memberships or important account content.

Cheaterscom

I think its a good website if u want to learn more about chess but when it comes to pvp there are just far too many noobs that just sit there in godmode. What i mean is they use two phones, they use one to mirror your moves against ai and then do the perfect moves back so there is no way you can win, they will disguise a couple of moves to make it look legit but i can always tell the difference between a computer and a human. Computer gets me mad because its teef and a human will normally lose against me unless he is really really good at chess. Now its getting out of hand, i played like ten cheaters in a row. Chesscom need to do more about this situation or employ ppl to be an admin to play against people and manually ban cheaters.

Also i see the noobs crying in the comments about their son got banned fir cheating. Good keep banning these guys because they get me mad when i play them. Serves your son right for cheating cry baby in the comments

Premium member unfairly restricted from…

Premium member unfairly restricted from tournaments
I am very disappointed and frustrated with my experience.

I pay for a Premium membership because I genuinely enjoy playing chess, especially tournaments. However, my account was suddenly restricted from joining tournaments due to an alleged “Sportsmanship Violation,” and I do not understand why.

I did not intentionally disconnect, I did not abuse the abort feature, and I was simply playing normally. My internet connection can sometimes be unstable because it is not connected by cable. If there was any disconnection, delay, or connection issue during a game, it was not intentional and should not be treated as bad sportsmanship.

I lost some games, but losing should not be treated as bad sportsmanship. I always try to play fairly and respectfully.

What feels especially unfair is that many players on the platform behave dishonestly or break the rules, yet honest players like me are being restricted without a clear explanation or proper review. I understand that rules are necessary, but honest Premium members should not be automatically restricted without someone properly checking the situation.

The automated response says the restriction will go away after playing regular games, but I mainly play tournaments. That does not feel like a fair solution, especially for a Premium member who pays to enjoy the platform.

I would like my account to be reviewed by a real human support agent. Premium members should receive clear explanations and fair support, not just automatic restrictions without proper review.

Please review my account manually and explain exactly why this restriction was applied.

My account has issues sending friend requests, and it has a bad ranking system. My game loads slow as im trying to play. It has bad cheaters and doesn't detect them for a long period of days, they cheated in my games 20-25 times. In my other account, the title "play a friend" doesn't work, as I click on it to send a game to my friend. It disappears and I can't see my friend list. I never recommend this app.

It should be possible to challenge a friend by entering their username in the menu: Play > Play a Friend. You can view your friends list and invite friends by tapping on the icon at the top right of the app's homescreen.

In terms of cheating, we use advanced methods to prevent cheating whenever possible, and to immediately ban players who use help in games. Some losses could come due to an opponent cheating, but the good news is that our statistics show cheating actually occurs in less than 1% of games. Giving each opponent the benefit of the doubt can help you keep a strong mindset, play at your best, and get back to a winning streak!

Chess.com needs a new system for pairing up players.

As I play chess.com I get paired up with people who are the same ELO as me but in elite divisions which means that they are at a higher skill level so I think that chess.com should put you with yiur rank, so if yiur a silver rank then you get paired up with a silver ranked player, which I’m getting paired up with elite leveled players and it isn’t fair

Thank you for this feedback. Leagues are more of an indicator of how often you play chess, rather than one's skill level. On the Leagues main page, you can find more details on how the Leagues system works:
www.chess.com/leagues

In general, match-ups are based on rating level, which is the most accurate measure of your skill in the game. You can filter games by opponent rating using the menu: Play > More > Custom game. For more details on how the rating system works on Chess.com, visit:

They banned my 12 year old son after…

They banned my 12 year old son after about 3 months and did not issue any refund while we paid for one year. Not sure what he did wrong, but he is a young child. If he did something wrong, you should issue a warning with an explanation first and if you ban him, you should issue a refund for unused 9 months. A minor child can't break any contract terms because contacts with children are not valid to begin with.

Update 1: Hello, I followed your link to the main chess page. I clicked on your support page. An AI handles your support page, but it is pretty much useless. It could not locate the account based on the username and would not provide an email address to live support, and just closed my inquiry without providing any meaningful information. The child's username is maximis98. He does not remember the email that he used. He believes that he did not use any email. Please reactivate his account or issue us a refund for the unused 9-10 months of the membership. We purchased a one-year membership, but you deactivated his account after about 2-3 months of use.

Update 2: His username was maximis998. When I asked for a pro-rated refund, I received a message that Membership purchases for accounts closed for violating the terms of service cannot be refunded. Please take note that a minor can't violate any terms because any agreement with a minor can't be valid. A minor lacks the capacity to enter into an agreement.

Update:
We're sorry for the trouble, but there does not seem to be any Chess.com account with the username "maximis98". This could be explained if the username was changed recently or if it were spelled slightly differently.

Please submit a refund request as detailed above, and our Billing team will assist you as soon as possible.

Thank you for this feedback. So that available moves will be displayed when you select pieces in games, make sure to enable the option "Show Legal Moves" in Board settings. On our website, you can access these settings by clicking the gear icon to the top right of the chess board while on the Play page. On our app, you can access this setting in the menu: More > Settings > Board.

On the Chess.com app, you can also enable the setting "Confirm each move" in the menu: More > Settings > Play > Live Chess.

We're working to implement the "Confirm each move" setting for Live Chess games on our website as well!

Sanbaggers, failing premium featurs

I don't know about engine users - chess.com is apparently trying very hard to ban actual cheaters. There are A LOT of cheaters who are banned every day. But, for example, sandbagging in tournaments is just normalized on chess.com; I don't see them banned as much as engine cheaters.
And I have to talk you out of buying subscriptions on chess.com. A lot of premium features are just filled with BUGS and don't work, like studying your own openings, where you see almost all of your games as draws, and you don't see the real statistics. This is wild for such a huge company and these subscription prices. And the "support" is an AI chatbot that only gaslights you into thinking that everything is working. I am not even talking about the fact that all these features are just right there, free on another popular chess website.

Thank you for this feedback. We have automatic detection systems in place to identify and ban sandbaggers, as well as cheaters. These accounts are immediately banned from Chess.com!

We completely understand how important the concern is with sandbagging, especially when it comes to tournaments. With that in mind, our team is exploring potential restrictions or criteria we can add to tournaments to prevent newer accounts with un-established ratings from participating.

It should be possible to view your win-loss-draw stats for all your games using the Explorer or Openings tools on Chess.com. So that we may investigate the issue in more detail, please contact our Support team or submit a bug report at:
