Scam Alert

Please be very cautious when considering this company. I have been a very good customer with Discount Power since day one, always paying on time and never having any issues. To be fair, I never had any service issues either—it was just power, and it worked.

Earlier this month, I kept seeing a message in my Discount Power app saying: “You have until August 15, 26 to pick a new plan before it expires.” So, I figured it was time to shop around and see what was out there.

I ended up signing up with Chariot Energy for one of their “free nights” plans. Not only does it provide me with free electricity from 11 PM to 6 AM, but the daytime rate was also better than what Discount Power was offering me. So I did what anyone would do in that situation and switched.

Today, August 17, I received a call from a manager at Discount Power telling me that I have a $300 early termination fee.

I explained that there must be some kind of mistake. The ONLY reason I switched was because their own app was telling me that my plan was expiring on August 15 and that I needed to choose a new plan before then.

The manager explained that the message in the app was supposedly referring to renewing the existing plan 12 months from now and that my current plan was actually good until August 2027.

I told him I didn't understand why I should have to switch back to Discount Power in order for them to waive a fee that, based on the information their own app gave me, I had every reason to believe would not apply.

He then told me the only way he could waive the $300 fee was if I went back to Discount Power.

At that point, I told him I'm sorry, but I don't think what they are doing is ethical. You're telling customers they have until a certain date to pick a new plan “before it expires,” then charging them a $300 early termination fee when they act on that information, and the solution you're offering is that I return to your company?

The notification in the app didn't say “your renewal option expires.” It didn't say “your plan will actually expire in August 2027.” There was no fine print, no additional explanation, and no link to clarify what “expires” meant, this is extremely misleading.

I have now switched to another provider that offered me a better plan, and I have no reason to switch back simply because Discount Power says they will waive a $300 fee if I do.

I'm sharing this so potential customers can make an informed decision and, more importantly, pay close attention to what these companies are telling you about your contract, renewal dates, and early termination fees.

Just sharing my 2 cents so you don't have to put up with shady and unethical business practices.

They misinformed and won't let me prove it

I was a long term and used to be a customer that thought they were a good electric company. That all changed in 2024. My contract was up and I started looking for a good, long-term deal. The rules about electric rates had also changed near this time or so I believe. The rates posted at this point in time did include the Centerpoint charge.

My contract rate, that was expiring, was 9.9 cents/kWh. When I got online (powertochoose.org) I saw rates that were 13.9 to 16.9 cents/kWH which was alarming. I called Discount Power to see if they had any additional rates that were not listed on powertochoose.org or if they had any 'deals' for existing customers to continue their business. The salesman was nice enough and went to tell me that my old rate of 9.9 cents/kWH did not include the Centerpoint charge and that the plan I was looking at (14.9 cents/kWH for 60 months) was essentially the same as my expiring plan. I asked a number of times for him to clarify this and he reiterated that my electric bill would be essentially the same. I finally agreed and signed up for that 'deal'.

The following month, I got my electric bill and it was 45% higher than before but it was July and it was a hot month. The following month my bill was higher again and 50% higher than the 2 previous August bills. I looked at the bills and compared to the previous years bills for the same time period and found the issue. My new contract rate was correct; however, my old, expired plan for 9.9 cents / kWH, did include the Centerpoint charge. I felt like they lied to me and I remembered that they record all the phone conversations. I called their customer service department to complain and after explaining that I felt like I was 'bait and switched' they said that they would go to the 'archives' and listen to the phone call to see if I was indeed 'lied' to by their representative. After waiting for 30 minutes, the new customer representative came back and said that they had listened to the phone conversation and the part where their representative stated that my bill would be the same wasn't in the recording. I asked if I could listen to the recording, they said that wasn't allowed. After making me feel like I was crazy, I accepted this plan as my plan and knew I'd be moving in the future.

Move ahead to 2 weeks ago, I moved out of the house back in September 2025 but it took until April 2026 to sell the house. I got my final bill with a contract termination fee. I called customer service and asked to speak with a customer service manager. After waiting for a while, a CSM took my call and I again explained what happened in 2024 and they went back and found the call recording and listened again yet somehow didn't hear where their salesperson told me my bill would not be changing much. I again asked if I could listen to the recording and I was told they don't allow that. Again, I feel like maybe I'm crazy and they could have resolved that by letting me listen to the conversation. I make my living working in sales and working with numbers and I'm positive of what was talked about and the explanation of the rates yet they won't let me hear the recording that would ease my concerns (or prove me right).

I asked if since I had fulfilled half of my contract period if the early termination fee could be cut in half; they said no. I told them they left me no option but to write bad reviews about their company, their customer service and their business practices.

DO NOT GO WITH DISCOUNT POWER...they are not the 'discount' that is in their name!

Overpriced

I know prices have gone up but we've gotten the highest bills we've ever had through the whole year.

Switched and won't go back. Prices are absurd.

Where's the ZERO star rating?

This company has gone from bad to worse. Almost Every other month they are hitting me with all kinds of fees. My AI called it double stacking penalties and fees. I had to replace my bankcard due to my bankcard being stolen and I had to wait on my bankcard and it caused me to be late on my payments and they hit me with late fees on the same day. When I called them about it, they were very non caring. Luckily I am close to the end of my contract because the quicker I can say Hasta La Vista to this company the better. I found another company Ill be switching over to who has better rates and better customer service. I go over to them next week!

Double Charge Rip-off

I had Value Power, they sold out to Discount Power and switched me mid-month. Rate didn’t change but they charged me a Monthly Base charge from both Value and Discount Power for the month of December. If they did this to all Value Power customer’s they could possibly have ripped off several Hundred Thousand Dollars. What a scam!!!

If I could give zero stars I would

If I could give zero stars I would. My power company SW&L sold my account to Discount and I had absolutely no idea until my power was shut off this morning. Apparently, they sold my account and I did not receive any sort of communication from Discount Power (I did a deep dive into my deleted messages, spam, missed phone calls and voicemails. Nothing!) So I call to pay the past due amount and let the agent know I'll be switching service as soon as humanly possible and they have the gall to charge me a disconnection fee of $125 even though I do not have a contract with this company. In reading other reviews on BBB and Google they turn people over to collections. I'll gladly pay the $125 to be rid of this unscrupulous company but not before letting as many people as I can know to stay far away.
