EDP Solar - the most incompetent business I ever dealt with
If I could give EDP Solar negative stars, I would.
Where to start?
Ah, yes, the panel installation.. I purchased a two panel configuration using premium Samsung product. Two techs who showed up tried to install a scratched panel that was outside the factory package. After a short persuasion I managed to convince them that I don't want a scratched panel. During their work they showed zero concern for their own safety and safety of my property, working with live wires without even bothering to flip the closest fuse switch. I guess they just felt lucky that day.
I wish that I stopped this charade right there.
After reading technical documentation for the panels and looking closer at the installed ones, I noticed several issues. I am an electrical engineer with 35 years of experience working for Fortune 100 companies in US, so I can certainly read technical documentation and analyze electrical/mechanical work.
I noticed that one of the panels is hanging off the brace support by 2/3 of its width and, of course, 2/3 of its weight. This causes the panel to bend and stay stressed, possibly vulnerable to cracking under high temperature or wind. Second issue is that both panels were installed at 7 degrees of incline, while the manufacturer (Samsung) recommends at least 13.5 degrees to facilitate self cleaning. Ideally, these panels should be installed at about 40 degrees for better efficiency. Obviously, loss of about 10% of efficiency of panels does not matter to EDP because they will gladly sell me the energy that my panels don't produce.
In meantime, October rains kicked in and I realized that the roof where EDP Solar installers worked is leaking.
I created several tickets with EDP Solar support to address the above issues, together with photos and Samsung technical documentation. Each and every ticket was apparently closed after a few weeks without a single visit of tech support team. I received only cookie-cutter email responses saying that 'we did not notice any problems using our remote monitoring'. Since all three of the complaints were related to purely mechanical issues, I have no clue how they could possibly verify the mechanical installation using remote monitoring (unless they have cameras installed, which they don't).
By the time I received responses to my tickets, the month of 'take it back' warranty has expired, so I was stuck with EDP Solar, which at this point appeared completely unwilling to fix any of the issues. I fixed the roof leak at my own expense because I could not rely on EDP to (not) correct the problem during the rainy season in Porto.
Then it gets even better - EDP Solar sent me a 130€ bill for a tech support visit that was never scheduled and no one ever showed up. This was, I suspect, probably some sort of 'yes, this is what you get if you mess with us' kind of pressure tactic. As a long time New Yorker, I kind of get this 'wise guy' approach to the problem.
So the next step in this ordeal was going to EDP Loja, creating an official complaint for failure to act in good faith on specific technical issues with installation and falsifying a business record for that phantom 130€ bill. I got a response letter from Mr. Duarte Bettencourt - a total corporate BS stating that the installation was performed to 'quality standard at EDP', filled with completely irrelevant facts that did not in any shape or form answer any of specific issues I raised. This 'analysis' was of course made without anyone actually taking a look at the panels.
The only benefit I had from this was that EDP quietly credited that bogus 130€ bill after I threatened to sue them in court. Of course, there was not a single word of apology.
Unless you are already yawning, here is the icing on the cake. The other day I got an email from EDP Comercial about 'a great opportunity' to sell the surplus energy produced by solar panels back to EDP at a measly 25% markup after following a few simple steps - register a CAE 35113 event with Finaçes portal, register your IBAN and account with EDP. Then, EDP will be producing semianual bills and send them to Finançes electronically. Since Finaçes expect monthly billing, you must log in into Finançes every month except for the semianual bills and create a missing bill entry.
How stupid is this?
No one at EDP apparently ever thought that this is inconvenient to thousands of their customers. I guess creating monthly bills is somehow way too complicated. But aren't they already doing exactly that to bill their own consumers? Or maybe to send two actual semianual bills and 10 zero amount monthly bills? Or maybe EDP just doesn't want customers to claim money?
So, here is my plan B: as soon as my 10% EDP Solar discount ends in October this year, I'll be saying goodbye to EDP - by far the most incompetent gangster business I’ve ever dealt with.
