The course was interesting

The course was interesting, however, cannot be used as a certificate without the full payment as the disclosure states, therefore, even with completion you can't use the training for your resume.

If it seems too good to be true, it is... You can find the programs offered through other informational programs without having the trainer explain that you're not one of their students but a client.

Honest Review: Cybersecurity Bootcamp with edX/University of Minnesota

I am currently attending the Cybersecurity Bootcamp offered by edX in partnership with the University of Minnesota. While the program’s curriculum provides a strong foundation in cybersecurity concepts, its execution falls significantly short in key areas such as infrastructure reliability, instructor quality, and responsiveness to feedback.

Prestigious Branding, Misaligned Delivery
One of the primary reasons I chose this program was the use of the University of Minnesota’s name in its marketing. Like other edX bootcamps, the program leverages the reputation of prestigious universities to attract students. The advertising creates high expectations, giving the impression that these institutions are deeply involved in the program's design and delivery. In reality, the execution feels like it’s outsourced to third-party providers with limited oversight from the university itself.

If not for these well-recognized names, I would have honestly chosen Simplilearn’s Cloud Computing Bootcamp, which I’ve attended in the past. Simplilearn consistently delivered organized sessions with smart, professional instructors who ensured a seamless learning experience. Unfortunately, this bootcamp does not live up to the same standards.

No credit for course removed from certification program

I had enrolled in a certificate program "Foundations of AI IBM professional Certificate". However one of the courses "Introduction to Watson AI" within the program was not available for most part of the year and was only available for a two months in between which had outdated content from 2019. Even that was taken off and I was not able to achieve the program certificate.

I contacted them over multiple emails, but no response from their support team. No refunds provided to the certificate program to which I was enrolled in.

There are errors within the program and the customer service is poor they do not even reply let alone solving your problem. The errors are within the answers to the tests and also labs which you need to pass to get the certificate, so if you fail you have to pay them again
the poorest program i have ever enrolled, find somewhere else to gain any certificate you are seeking

Essentials of Data Literacy using R

I started a data analytics course with edX at the end of April (2024). I thought I could get through it quickly. I am not sure where I am in the class because there is no navigation or widget to show me my progress in the course. The class is a few years old and the course specifically said that if you have a problem using R, post a message on the discussion board and someone will contact you within two business days. The first R error I encountered took someone 2 weeks to contact me, BUT I first had to contact customer service to elevate the issue. I am on my second R error and entering the third week of waiting for someone to help me. I have no idea if I will be able to complete this course due to the lack of technical support. I am very unhappy and frustrated.

The proctoring for exams is BEYOND…

The proctoring for exams is BEYOND DREADFUL. I have wasted 8 hours with support, trying all items. Then 20min on hold to a support number which does not work.

Their systems are dreadful. What is the use of proctoring IF IT DOES NOT WORK.

The course structure was poor and the demands ranged from simplistic to insanely complex - not that the "guess your way to success" assessments gave any challenge. I got a certificate. University of Maryland

I started the Project Management course from the University of Maryland in June last year (2023). I should have completed it by mid-Jan 2024, but the course got postponed due to some “module re-design” activities according to EdX’s team. I was supposed to take the official Project Management Professional certificate by Q1 2024, but the university is keeping on posting 2 modules without giving any explanation. This is unacceptable!

Current student. Not worth it.

A little background. I've always worked with computers and been ahead of my time but I've never worked in the IT industry. I spent my time working HVAC until I was injured and could not work in the field anymore. At that point the company decided that I'm not worth anything to them. Take any advice of my family I decided to get into the IT world. Doing research I was presented with multiple recommendations for cyber boot camp EDx through the University of Minnesota. We are now close to halfway through and have been giving contradictory information from the recruiter and the instructor after the deposit and complete payment was completed. No refund policy after the first 30 days or so. That's when everything picks up pace. My thought was try to capture as much information as possible. It's been nothing but bottlenecks of not having access to the virtual environments using your own credit cards to create temporary accounts to get access to some environments. Instructors saying hands up they don't know what to do but reach out to the powers that be. In the end it's super frustrating because I'm committed to completing this course. The instructor said that if you fell behind 80% of the time people do not complete and bail out. With the bottlenecks it makes it almost impossible. Spend your time trying to troubleshoot how to get into the environment instead of being in them to practice. For $10,000 a student 51 students a class with over 200 classes that type of budget should be able to afford to present you with prepaid environments. The instructional staff is supportive as possible. But you really get the concept that they're not being supported on the upper end and it's the same thing. You would figure the people that are trying to teach you IT would know how to troubleshoot the IT issues to be able to teach you the IT. I should have read other reviews on Reddit prior to signing up for this particular class but was just desperate start the right structure into a new beginning for my career and future. Totally feel taken advantage of. Doesn't feel it was worth the money. Absolutely give you exposure to a lot of information but you can watch a YouTube video somebody clicking on Windows and it's not the same as working hands-on in a virtual environment. I hope that at least this reaches out to one person and then they decide not to take this class save themselves $10,000. Computer science degree requires calculus prerequisites and that is not my strong suit. I can figure almost anything out but from what I understand they just laugh at you if you have an edX certificate. A lot of the people in the industry just spent their time paying their dues and they look at you as you're trying to weasel your way in with it 6 month class with a company that doesn't really support you in the way you would need to really launch a new career. The career seminars are more review of information rather than prospecting employers. The same information about networking on LinkedIn can be found on the LinkedIn web page. The instructors won't give any personal references. Please avoid this company at all costs.

Another great fall

Back in the beginnings, there was true enthusiasm to offer MOOCs of quality and improve their platform, people engaged in the forums.

Now that I come back. A lot of features are missing, worse navigation of the course forum/boards.

The quality of the teaching now varies more than of the worst competitors: You can find really great courses still, but there are also courses even without videos and that look more of a blog post with ez quizes you can cheese in an afternoon.

For example, took one course from Linux Foundation on kubernetes, and it was really great. Decided to take the next in the program (again from Linux Foundation), and it was all opinions of the creator on a subject, with quizes that didn't match what was explained... Not the only case, even with some universities, there are great courses and others that really don't teach.

Another hardship I found is the amount of courses classified as "advanced" (in contrast to beginner and intermediate) that are still introductory (some with "Introduction" or "Fundamentals" in their titles.
You can take masters and microdegrees that to some extent could go deep in a topic, but it seems to me the focus of the creators is to make more courses to keep charging higher prices, while not dealing with very advanced material and industry applications, although this is more recommendable to get practice yourself at this point.

I was doing an LLM course the labs stopped working for me might course and edX support said that's a problem with the staff delivering the course. The staff delivering the course responded with a scripted message the forum thread I started and then went dark.

EDX can be used in different ways

EDX can be used in different ways. I personally have used EDX since its inception. I am a huge fan of e-learning and wrote to the UK government 40 years ago when the internet started with the massive opportunity it presented to improve UK education - deaf ears of course (read Rory Stewart's book on how government does not work). But EDX and FutureLearn have provided significant resources for everyone in the world online and if you 'audit' the course (as I do) then they are completely free. Yes some vary in quality, but some of the courses I have reviewed are simply the best courses I have ever taken in my life - and I have a UK Hons Degree done way back when. So, I suggest people stop & think before paying - Audit the course FIRST - then, if it is good quality and is what you expect, only then pay if you really need a certificate.

Save your money and avoid these courses (funny, I typed that as "curse" the first time and thinking about it I can't say that was actually a typo).

Having taken their cybersecurity Bootcamp, I have to say this was hands down the worst educational experience of my life! The management and delivery of this course is awful; the course materials are appallingly written, many times our instructor didn't even know what they were trying to convey to us or get us to do, and they are not regularly updated to reflect changes in the technology (VMs, etc.) that the company has us as students use. Speaking of technology issues, the daily litany of technical issues surrounding trying to access your student VMs, course materials on github, etc. is unreal. I don't know if I was in a training course or an episode of the Hunger Games hoping the odds would ever be in my favor whenever I logged into class, or tried to access course materials and VMs to do my homework and projects.

Other reviewers are spot on when they say that this course will not leave you prepared to take the professional certification exams or have you job ready; it merely introduces you to topics that you will need to know about. I concurrently followed several other cybersecurity courses on other, significantly more affordable, platforms just to fill in the gaps of what I'm not learning from this course.

In retrospect, I wish I'd known the course syllabus in detail so that I could have studied these topics on my own and saved the money I'd spent on this course and put it towards an actual degree in the subject.

This company is Satan incarnate

This company, edX/2U, is performing a money grab. They advertise about this great opportunity, a way to improve your living situation by learning a skill that is in need. I was sold by their salespeople on a great opportunity. When I finished, received my paper, paid my money, and couldn't find work... I was told there was no guarantee to find employment. Every response seemed as thought it was scripted.
not to mention, my mom passed away in the middle of the bootcamp I was enrolled in. I was grieving, I wasn't able to learn anything or retain any info. my mind was on mourning the passing of my mom. edx/2U counselors offered me one excused absence of the two days I missed when my mom passed. They didn't offer anything outside of that excused absence. No postponed class, maybe restart in a new class, a refund..Nothing. they are a greedy corporation that wants your money. I'm sure they've rebranded and are probably running this same scam under a new name. Just be careful.
