Having suffered a ransomware attack on…

Having suffered a ransomware attack on my QNAP NAS (Qlocker the name of the virus) I found myself many files encrypted with an unknown password. Purchased elcomsoft program: they guaranteed that I would find the password but IT DOESN'T WORK. Refund requested. THEY DO NOT GIVE ME IN fact they almost gave me the idiot. Stay away from this company, they are just scammers. They rely on Digital River (a company I respected, bought a lot of stuff from them and always satisfied) and I was very surprised by this; they should stay away from elcomsoft

VERY bad and slow support

VERY bad and slow support

So in their blog article "Elcomsoft vs. Hashcat Part 3: Attacks, Costs, Performance and Extra Features" they say "We stand behind our product, quickly resolving the issues once they are reported."

It is already very funny when you compare this claim to the real performance of their support, but it become hilarious when you see that in their article they compare their support to the forum of the free tool hashcat.

So, I bought Advanced Office Password Recovery in order to recover the password from an important old Word 2003 file that I don't remember anymore.

Problem : their program doesn't support GPU acceleration for Word 2003 file.

Hashcat does.

Result : on my laptop with a NVIDIA RTX2070 GPU, hashcat can compute 400 million passwords per second on my computer, vs less than one million with Advanced Office Password Recovery.

So Hashcat is 400x more powerful than their software on my laptop. And it's free.

And wait, the free forum of Hashcat is actually WAY better to answer any question than the support of ElcomSoft.

Their first answer took 7 DAYS to come back. It took a few hours on Hashcat's forum.

Their 2nd answer took 2 days (way to go !)

Their 3rd answer was the same day (are they actually becoming good ?)

Their 4th answer took... 6 WEEKS (with 3 emails in total from me asking them to reply).

And well, the quality of the answers was not so great, to say the least.

So my advice : first try hashcat, and if really it doesn't work for you, then you can consider ElcomSoft's products, but just pray you will not have to contact their support.

Very helpful tools

I like their tools a lot because they do many truly helpful things to work with encrypted data on computers, iPhones and as far as know some cloud services like Google (maybe more). Highly recommend their Disk Decryptor and EDPR for breaking passwords. Helps me a lot.

Great promise, impressive capabilities, customer service miss

Great promise, impressive capabilities, customer support miss.

Short version: this is an impressive product - and it fills a massive need in the market.

But, suggest you are REALLY sure it works for EXACTLY your needs before purchasing - the refund policy is extremely customer un-friendly.

In my case, I downloaded a trial version to see if it would help solve a short term need. Demo said I needed a paid version. I upgraded, since it was worth it for me to spend 200 to solve the problem. However, only AFTER purchasing, the software let me know that I couldn’t extract iCloud data without the forensic edition (6-8x more expensive).

Unfortunate all around - had they simply refunded the purchase when it didn’t work as promised, I’m 100% sure I would have purchased at a later date, and likely would have recommended it to many others too.
