Supply chain department - discrimination and harassment
I worked in the Supply Chain department at EUH Main Side under manager Carlos Ortiz. From day one, I experienced racially discriminatory behavior and harassment. Carlos told me I look like I use illegal drugs or smoke, based solely on my appearance. I maintain a professional appearance, always come with a haircut, hair done professionally, and dressed in accordance with Emory's dress code. I have never smoked, used drugs, or consumed alcohol. I take care of my mother who has cancer and would never do anything to endanger her. His comment was false and based on stereotypes about my race and hair. I offered to take a drug test on the spot and contacted the university about this accusation. The matter was dropped, but the comment itself and how it was handled have stayed with me. For my first month, Carlos refused to give me a badge like everyone else. Despite being assigned to supply rooms, he made me ring department bells and buzz in like a patient instead of a worker. I had to contact a director, Kelly, multiple times over a month to get this resolved because Carlos saw no issue with sending me to rooms I had no access to. Carlos also speaks down to me whenever I bring up concerns. When I raised an issue about another associate placing an order for a nonexistent department, Carlos dismissed me and treated me like I was unintelligent. He offered no help and leaves my texts on read. Carlos also touched and slapped me on my backside on multiple occasions. This physical contact was unwelcome, inappropriate, and made the workplace hostile. I never received write-ups or negative feedback. I was always on time and completed all assignments. I was given the most departments daily and completed everything asked of me. However, my contract, without explanation, was prematurely shortened after reporting these issues. If HR is reading this, please survey employees about Carlos Ortiz. I am confident I am not the only one who has experienced this.
