I have ended up with a sturdy 18’ x 36’…
I have ended up with a sturdy 18’ x 36’ polytunnel. Looking back I would say this was only because I watched all the relevant videos beforehand and then used my own judgement on three matters that only became apparent to me as I progressed.
Firstly the tube hoops when assembled are wider than the span. Over 21’ and needed compressing to 18’ when installing over the base tubes. Because the 50mm tubes are need significant force to compress/tension I made the decision to concrete the base tubes in the ground. And I am glad I did as the base tubes remained level and properly aligned and square after the hoops were installed.
Secondly, I used the green polythene, which in practice heats up very quickly in the sun and expands and sags, and when the sun goes and it cools it then contracts and is fully tensioned around the frame. The advice First Tunnel give is that the polythene should only touch the hoops. But in my case it touches both hoops AND any tubes fitted between (and inside) the hoops - Not just on a sunny day but also when it’s colder and fully tensioned! So what? Well 2 things. Install and fully stretch green polythene on a sunny day! Especially if you are using a trench method and using soil backfill to tension to the polythene. I was lucky as I just happened randomly to have installed the green polythene on a very hot day. Secondly, also put anti hot spot tape on the ridge tube and any other reinforcing tube fixed inside the hoops. You will need to buy extra tape.
Thirdly you really need to degrease the tubes where you put on anti hot spot tape - soap and water is not really good enough! a proprietary degreasing spray can worked for me with kitchen paper towel to clean off the gunk.
