Terrible Experience

They failed to explain their key drop off times to us. After this lack of communication they refused to acknowledge their mistake and instead said they would take our deposit rather than trying to work with us. This caused a terrible hassle for my family, it completely uprooted our traveling plans and caused my kids to cry because our trip was cut short. I have never seen such disregard, negligence, and unprofessionalism from a car rental company, they made everything complicated when it should’ve been simple. Shame on Green Motion Glasgow.

Rented a car for a holiday around…

Rented a car for a holiday around Croatia and Montenegro. Henry/Hrvoje was super helpful. I had to drop the car at a parking lot because of a medical emergency, and he took care of it and finished the paperwork. 10/10 service from him and understanding.

The prices are affordable too, and the cross-country fee was reasonable.

Rude staff, Cars in Horrible Condition, Scam insurance and horrible pick up/drop off experience.

Rude staff. The company charges 30 euro for debit card reservations and make you buy expensive insurance if you don’t have the credit card. I had a touchless credit card that they refused to process, so they forced me into something terrible.

My rental was 166 euro and they forced me into 210 euro "FULL BODY-TO-BODY INTERNAL"insurance I didn’t want just because I don’t have a credit card. They also lie about the condition of the car on pick up so make sure to film a detailed video of the car before pickup.

They basically trap you into low initial rates and then charge upwards of 600%+ on their rental.

MOST OF ALL - THIS INSURANCE IS A SCAM, IT COVERS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. THEY FORCED ME TO PAY 600 EURO FOR A SMALL SCRATCH ON THE BACK OF THE CAR WHICH WAS ALREADY IN TERRIBLE SHAPE.

Update : They just made me pay 800 euro on top of 120 euro rental and rejected full insurance that they made me pay for using debit card. Total rental for a crappy old car : 950 euro instead of sticker 120 price. Disgusting company that deserves to go out of business

The car smelled, the AC barely worked - and the car itself was worth 4-5k euro tops, and they billed me 180 euro additional for "insurance claim processing" that they do internally, estimating this basic cosmetic damage at 590 EURO!!!

The staff also all behave like you owe them something and they genuinely hate every customer. There is also no AC in the office and pick up/drop off can easily take over 3 hours together.

Avoid this hellhole at all costs

DO NOT USE!!

Car was not as ordered.
I took video before and after the rental, no damage can be seen in either. They claimed a scratch on the passenger rim as cause for a £230 deduction from my deposit. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM

Green motion Newcastle

Green motion Newcastle, rip off merchants, hired a virtually new car which I thought was in excellent condition, returned it 3 days later and they managed to find 2 damaged spots on the rear passenger side rear inner wheel arch which nobody would ever see or notice on an inspection, £500 worse off, avoid.....

My experience at collection raised serious concerns.

The employee serving me, Dylan, was very friendly throughout. When I mentioned I hadn't used my credit card for a while, he commented on it. When the card payment failed, he suggested the card may have been deactivated because it hadn't been used recently. He then tried the magnetic strip, which also failed. Another employee offered him a different card machine, but he declined and continued to insist the issue was with my card.

At that point, I was told my options were either to pay by debit card and purchase a full insurance package costing around £700 (my original rental was approximately £72), or to take a much smaller Fiat 500 for around £500. I was also told there were no other options and that I would not be able to get a car otherwise.

Before agreeing, I called my bank. They confirmed there were no issues with my card and that the problem appeared to be on the merchant side. After I returned to the desk and explained this, Dylan made a quick phone call, tried the card again, and it worked immediately with no issues. I was then told it must have been the card machine. He then went on to offer me a free upgrade on the car I had rented.

I cannot say whether this was deliberate, but the sequence of events made me very uncomfortable. If you're told there's a problem with your card and are then offered expensive alternatives, I strongly recommend contacting your bank before agreeing to anything. The car itself was fine, and I wasn’t charged when I returned it, but this experience left me with significant concerns.

Agent broke parcel shelf, I was blamed.

Upon return, having rented a Polo, I was carrying golf clubs. The back seat rest was hinged forward, the parcel shelf removed.
The agent put the back seat upright, trapped the parcel shelf and snapped the plastic locating pin.
I was blamed for this! Only the two of us there, his word accepted. 30 minutes later I left having paid for the damage and told insurance would recompense me. I had to pay in order to catch my flight.
Insurance does not pay internal damage so I found out later!
As I had paid in order to get out of the office to checkin for the flight (just made it, last at the counter), the matter was closed by Green Motion. No interest in taking any blame. My fault. No apology.
DO NOT use them, or do so at your peril.

Horrible service

Horrible service.
Stay away from them. I booked everything online and was to pick up at the Gatwick Airport branch. My credit would not work there(worked everywhere else before and after visiting them).I had to now pay for a more expensive insurance since I was now using my debit card and pay an extra £400 for a deposit. I have since returned the car and for over 2 months now i am yet to be credited with my deposit despite numerous emails and calls. Currently exploring legal action against them. I had a dreadful experience with their service, and I strongly urge others to avoid them. I booked everything online and intended to pick up my rental car at the Gatwick Airport branch. Upon arrival, my credit card was unexpectedly declined, even though it had worked perfectly everywhere else before and after my visit. This forced me to buy a more expensive insurance plan and pay an additional £400 deposit using my debit card.

I have already returned the car, but despite multiple emails and phone calls, I have yet to receive my deposit back—over two months later. I am now actively considering legal action against them for this unfair treatment.

I can confirm that security deposits are automatically released by Green Motion on the last day of your rental after it has been established that the rental vehicle has been returned in the same condition as it was provided, and there are no further outstanding charges.

Please visit https://greenmotion.com/terms and select the country you rented from to see the deposit information which will advise the general timeframe that you can expect for the release of the deposit.

Whilst in most cases this is available again within 10 working days, unfortunately, this can take up to 30 days depending on the bank that you use. We suggest that you contact your bank as they may be able to speed this process up for you.

Green Motion's policy is to use pre-authorised transactions for our security deposits, which ring-fence the amount within your account, not charge it. This pre-authorised transaction will allow us to make charges if necessary at the end of the rental, but unless this occurs no money will leave your account. Due to the nature of this transaction, the release of these funds may not show on your bank statement as a separate transaction. If you believe that you have been charged your security deposit, please contact your bank and ask them to provide proof of the transaction as a charge on the first day of your rental so that we can look further into this for you.

If this amount is still not available in your account after 30 days from the last day of your rental, please contact us at escalation@cs.greenmotion.com.

Avoid Green Motion at Milan Bergamo Airport

Our experience with Green Motion at Milan Bergamo Airport was extremely disappointing.

Our scheduled pick-up time was 9:30 a.m., but we arrived at the pick-up location at 8:50 a.m. From the moment we arrived, three of us repeatedly tried to contact the company by phone, SMS, and WhatsApp. We never received a single response, and the WhatsApp number provided wasn’t even registered.

We waited at the pick-up location for over an hour, but there were no employees, no information, and no car. During that time, several other customers with reservations arrived and experienced exactly the same situation.

Eventually, we had no choice but to contact booking.com, through whom we had made the reservation. They immediately acknowledged that the situation was completely unacceptable and helped us start the refund process.

As we were travelling with our 6-month-old baby, we couldn’t wait any longer. We had to rent another car through a different company at a significantly higher cost just to continue our holiday.

This was an incredibly stressful way to start our vacation. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend Green Motion and would strongly advise others to choose a more reliable car rental company.

Don't bargain on getting your security deposit back in 7 days

The car was an MG. I didn't realise how filthy the windscreen was until I was on the motorway and the sun shone on it. It was as though I was driving through dense fog. Very dangerous and very frightening. I booked through carjet who had advised a security deposit of 1200 would be held on my credit card and returned 7 days after the car was returned. Green Motion actually held 2000 and tried to get me to take out additional insurance which I didn't need as I had taken out platinum insurance with Carjet.
The security deposit was not returned for 16 days and resulted in my bank paying my credit card and putting me over my agreed overdraft.

Avoid

Avoid - rude, dismissive and unhelpful

Zero stars for customer service

Arrived 5 mins late for pick-up, staff still there (despite not picking phone up as I was travelling to them), told couldn’t help but to phone in the morning.

Phoned 8am and told booking will have disappeared off of system no attempt to help - will never use again and I recommend everyone else to avoid

My experience with Green Motion was lacking…

My experience with Green Motion was extremely disappointing. The staff member who checked me out was professional, and I specifically paid for an extra rental day while declining all other optional extras. When I returned the car, I was told the payment had been recorded as a vehicle upgrade instead, and I was charged an additional £30.

Despite providing evidence that I had made an additional payment, the branch refused to acknowledge that a simple administrative error could have occurred. Rather than investigating or trying to resolve the issue, they insisted I pay first and pursue reimbursement myself through email, with no customer service phone number available.

What disappointed me most wasn't the mistake itself, but the complete lack of compassion, accountability and customer service. A genuine attempt to investigate the issue would have made all the difference. Instead, the entire burden of resolving Green Motion's error was placed on me.

Stay away from green Motion!!!

Stay away from green Motion!!!

Rented a car through this Company. Absolutely awful, the worst service I have ever experienced.

I Arrived 30 minutes before I was supposed to get the car, Got it 1,5 hour later. The people at the desk were extremely rude and tried to hold customers and waste their time, because the cars werent ready When they were supposed to.

3 families before got extra Bills of 200-600 euros. I myself got an extra og 600 even though I brought a Mastercard credit, and debit card.

They insist on full insurance from them, even though you already have it. It is clear that they are doing all they Can to scam people, and exploit the fact that you have no other choice than to pay….

Please pay a bit more in the beginning and stay with the safe brands that wont rip you off in the end.

Horrible - EV trap/secret fees

Horrible. Bunch of secret fees. "Upgraded" to an electric without mentioning it was an electric. Sort of sprung an electric vehicle on us after we already signed the contract. Horrible customer service. Useless employees. Way too expensive. Never ever book here. Trust me, the money you "save" on the initial booking will double tenfold once they drop the 1500 extra dollar secret fees on you. Use literally any other company. Bicycling would be better.

Rejected payment card (credit/debit), forced duplicate insurance, inferior vehicle and poor service

We had an extremely disappointing and unnecessarily expensive experience with Green Motion.

We booked a vehicle through CarTrawler, including full insurance through XCover. All documentation and online check-in had been completed before we arrived.

1. We were not allowed to collect the car before the exact rental start time

Our booking started at 15:30, and we arrived at 15:00. We were told that we could not collect the car early — or even remain in the queue — until exactly 15:30.

We therefore had to wait outside for 30 minutes and only rejoin the queue at the exact start time shown on our rental agreement. The service at the desk was extremely slow, taking approximately 20 minutes per customer. As a result, we did not reach the counter until around 16:00, despite having arrived 30 minutes before our scheduled collection time.

This made the process unnecessarily frustrating and delayed the start of our trip significantly.

2. Our credit/debit card was rejected without a clear explanation

At the counter, we were informed that my card could not be accepted because it was a “dual circuit” credit/debit card.

This was the first time we had ever encountered such a restriction. We have used the same type of card with other car-rental companies without any issues, and the employee could not provide a clear explanation of why it was unacceptable.

While waiting at the office, we also saw at least two other couples experiencing the same issue.

3. Pressured into purchasing duplicate insurance

We were told that the only way to collect the vehicle was to purchase Green Motion’s own full insurance, despite already having full coverage through XCover.

We felt we had no real choice. Refusing would have meant losing the rental completely, so we had to accept Green Motion’s insurance at an additional cost of €530.

This was added on top of the original rental cost of approximately €500, meaning we paid around €1,000 for a 10-day rental.

What made this situation even more concerning was that, when the €530 insurance charge was processed, we were asked whether it should be charged to the credit-card or debit-card function of the exact same dual circuit card that had supposedly been rejected. This gave us the impression that the card policy was being used to pressure customers into buying Green Motion’s own insurance.

4. We received an inferior vehicle

We had booked a 2025 Ford Puma Hybrid or similar. Instead, we received an older Fiat 500X.

In our view, the Fiat 500X was not comparable to the vehicle we booked in terms of model year, fuel efficiency, hybrid functionality, specification or overall vehicle class.

5. The fuel policy was not followed

Green Motion’s stated fuel policy was full-to-full. However, the vehicle was handed over with an almost empty fuel tank.

We therefore had to drive directly to a petrol station before we could begin our journey, which was the opposite of the agreed arrangement.

Overall experience

Overall, this was a frustrating, time-consuming and extremely expensive rental experience. We arrived early, completed all required documentation in advance, and had already purchased full insurance. Despite this, we experienced delays, a rejected payment card, pressure to purchase duplicate insurance, an inferior vehicle and a car with almost no fuel.

We expect Green Motion to acknowledge what happened and refund the unnecessary €530 insurance charge.

Based on this experience, we cannot recommend Green Motion and will not rent from them again.

Update after Green Motion response:

Green Motion states multiple times during the booking process that “a physical, major credit card in the main driver's full name must be available for the security deposit”. What they (deliberately) “forget” to mention is that they reject credit cards which also have a debit card function.

If your card is a combined credit/debit card (which is standard for most Mastercard credit cards in the Nordic countries), DO NOT rent a car here unless you are willing to pay €50-60 per day for their own full insurance package instead.

Appalling experience

Appalling experience. I was charged nearly £400 for a small scrape on the wheel arch which had definitely been there already (in 38 degree heat we didn’t take a million photos as we usually do, unfortunately) and when we got in the car, next to the fuel gauge it said 300 miles, which we took to mean 300 miles of fuel left, so we returned it with 380 miles and were told we were being charged for having less fuel!! Absolute scam. Other people returning their cars also had bad experiences. To cap it all, waited 45mins for shuttle bus to return to Heathrow, which then stopped at a load of hotels before eventually getting to the airport. Never using this company again.

I had a highly disappointing experience…

I had a highly disappointing experience at the Green Motion desk at Edinburgh Airport on July 3rd regarding my prepaid reservation.

Upon arrival, the staff member, Dilyan, refused to honor my booking due to a minor name discrepancy ("Nico" instead of my legal name, "Mikolaj"). Despite my attempts to resolve the issue, he claimed it was impossible to amend the reservation and insisted that I enter into an entirely new contract at the significantly inflated price of £550.

The lack of flexibility and customer service was appalling. When I explained that this unexpected cost was not feasible, I was offered no alternative solutions, effectively leaving me unable to collect the vehicle I had already paid for. I was forced to rely on public transport to reach my destination. I am currently seeking a full refund of my €170.81 prepayment and would advise others to avoid Green Motion when booking a car.

There was a minor dent on the car from…

There was a minor dent on the car from our accident and they overcharged us triple what any normal mechanic in Cyprus would have charged.
When we told them about of this scam they brushed us off and continued to charge us without our consent.
