Makemkv Reviews 

I started using the software late 2025 under the limited free banner. My free version lasted until January for which I could have just extended the free period but I chose to buy the license.
I've had an approximately 90%, a couple discs failed due to being too physically damaged making the movies inaccessible (the thing I am trying to avoid). This was not the software's fault!!
I'm a tech guy so supporting a dev(s) helping me make my media more accessible to me feels like the right chose, at least for now they aren't making me sign up for a subscription like other services.

Software is fine but claims to be "free" whilst randomly stopping working every time the key expires. Then you can go on forums or reddit and get a load of self important self righteous idiots forcing you to buy it. Support the developer? I'm a developer and I get supported very well from my day job. I don't charge for any of my hobby projects because I am not a scam artist. If you are too lazy to generate a new key every year, I suggest you stick the project on github and let some real developers work on it.

FOSS is good, MakeMKV is a scam.

Don't waste your time with others this is the best.
This works quick and well to rip dvds without no hassle. I tried VLC and Handbreak and they are just too confusing this just works perfect everytime.

One review below has criticised the lack of support for new content. But given this is 100% freeware I'd say a bit of patience is worthwhile. As is, it's perfect for my old collection.

The developer doesn’t keep the software decryption keys updated frequently which means you can’t convert your newer video files quickly. The last one it’s been two weeks and still no update to the database. Go with Leawo Uhd Ripper instead, they always update their database so much faster than Makemkv and sure it costs a little more but MakeMkv can’t compete with the quality or speed of software and data base updates.
