Solid Home with Some Quirks
After one and half years now in our home, overall, I'm satisfied with my M/I home, though there are a few areas worth noting for prospective buyers. The quality of the utilities is great—I'm pleased with the furnace, water heater, water softener, air exchanger, and sump system. The home feels well-built, though there are some minor imperfections, like bowed walls, which caused gaps at the fireplace mantle. Fortunately, these don’t cause major issues.
There are a few design choices that I wish had been different. The single-hung windows can be tricky to clean, and they let in noticeable drafts—cold air tends to rush down the staircase from the upper floor to the lower. Also, the home has only a single-zone heating system, meaning the basement tends to stay in the upper 50s even with the main thermostat set to 68. I’ve had to supplement with electric heaters to stay comfortable.
From a functional perspective, the third-car garage space is positioned in a way that’s really only suited for a small car—not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing. Electrical capacity was another surprise—running both a heater and a TV in my basement office pushes the circuit to its limit, causing it to blow. If you work from home with multiple devices, you may want to consider an electrical upgrade.
Despite these quirks, the home offers good value, and most issues are manageable. That said, future buyers should be aware of certain factors like heating limitations, electrical capacity, garage space, and especially the drafty windows, which can contribute to noticeable temperature fluctuations in different areas of the home. Overall, it’s been a positive experience, but careful consideration of these details will help ensure a more comfortable living environment.
