Stay away from this concept of finding an attorney. Claudia Brice was my assigned attorney. Spoke 5 minutes and I have been billed $732.00.

There a reason that these attorneys use this form of finding clients. In my opion they are not good attorney's She talked to me for 5min and now they say I owe MFL $732.00 It scamy/scumy!

I do not think he was ready to handle this level of complexity. He is a good guy but advising me to not go to my hearing destroyed my creditability and now I have lost custody of my daughter and other stuff. Been over a year since I was a primary parent to a non existent parent.

My experience with attorney Kathryn…

My experience with attorney Kathryn Johnson was awful. I spent thousands and saw little progress on my case. I was billed hundreds weekly including for “ strategy meetings”. She has never informed me of what her strategy on my case actually was. She withdrew abruptly leaving me to fend for myself during serious custody negotiations with the opposing party. I’m highly disappointed with the service I received from this firm.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience with this law firm. I have been let down multiple times poor lack of communication absolutely no preparation and I have been charged for multiple different employees without my knowledge. This place is not somewhere i’d reccomend if you want to win a case or not be charged outrageously

Unethical billing practices

WOW! I'm even more angry that I didn't read these reviews before hiring them to complete a simple guardianship transfer - which I was told they could do. Jasmine Johnson was assigned to my case and I was billed MULTIPLE times for "research" and not an ounce of work was done on my case. When I finally fired her, I was billed an additional $100 for the email attachment of the 'official' letter closing my case with their office. I've disputed the charge with my credit card company multiple times and yet they continue to keep recharging me for it. I spent thousands with them for ZERO work product. They are the most unethical firm I've ever worked with.

RUN!

I strongly caution anyone considering Modern Family Law, and specifically attorney Kathryn Johnson, to think carefully before hiring. My experience with her and this firm was extremely disappointing.

From the start, communication was poor. Ms. Johnson often did not respond to emails in a timely manner, missed or arrived late to scheduled meetings, and even blocked my phone number. She did not return calls or text messages, and I rarely received updates unless I specifically requested them, despite the firm's contract stating that clients would receive weekly updates after meetings.

In my case, Ms. Johnson repeatedly confused my ex-husband's name with someone from another case, never scheduled mediation despite my paying two retainers for it, and did not file the subpoenas or motions she said she would file. She came to my temporary orders hearing unprepared--without the necessary evidence or documentation--and it left my case looking unorganized in court.

This was not my first disappointing experience with Modern Family Law. My previous attorney with the firm, Erica Larson, quit just weeks before my hearing. When Ms. Johnson took over, she attempted to withdraw from my case after only three days, citing "over-communication," even though responses from her were minimal. She later attempted to quit a second time two weeks after my hearing, leaving me scrambling.

Eventually, we agreed to end our attorney-client relationship, and I retained new counsel--Amber Hinson with Hinson Singla--who has been excellent. Despite knowing I had new representation and having no contact with me for four weeks, Ms. Johnson later invoiced me for work she allegedly did during that period.

Additionally, Modern Family Law's billing practices are concerning. They charge for the attorney's hourly rate, the paralegal's hourly rate, and the managing attorney's hourly rate for the same meeting. I was often left wondering where my money was going and why my case was not moving forward.

In my personal experience, Modern Family Law did not fight for me as a client, did not communicate effectively, and did not prioritize my case. Based on what I went through, I would not recommend this firm or Kathryn Johnson to anyone seeking family law representation.

Lack of Experience

Lack of Experience, Oversight, and Professionalism

I hired Kathryn Johnson to handle a family enforcement case, not knowing she was a recent law school graduate with no practical experience. Unfortunately, she was given my case without proper oversight from the firm, which became a major problem.

She misplaced important documents multiple times, forcing me to resend them and monitor my billing closely, since the firm charges $36 per email. She did not understand my divorce decree or mortgage-related details, and she never contacted the title company, I had to do most of the work myself. She also failed to consult any experts, despite clear gaps in her knowledge.

One of the most critical missteps was her failure to list herself as an expert witness, which meant I couldn’t recover attorney’s fees even if I had won. She submitted key evidence just five minutes before the hearing, and in court, she couldn’t operate her laptop prompting the judge to ask her why we were even here, since the decree clearly answered the question.

On top of that, she asked me for a 5-star review the same day I hired her, before doing any real legal work. Completely unprofessional.

I spent $18,000 over 12 months with no resolution. The firm promised experience and support and I received neither. If you need strong, knowledgeable legal representation, this is not the place to find it.

Helped my family

My family was really in trouble this last year and this firm was able to help greatly to straighten things out. I watched where they were and where they ended up after their case. Night and day. Thank you.
