Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 346 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with their subscriptions, citing issues such as unexpected credit limits, changes to terms of service, and accounts being downgraded or suspended without clear explanation. The customer service received widespread criticism for being unresponsive, unhelpful, and often relying on AI chatbots that failed to resolve problems or provide human interaction. Reviewers frequently felt that the company was not transparent about changes to their paid plans, leading to significant dissatisfaction with the service. Conversely, some people found the AI tool useful for research and praised its ability to provide sources with citations, considering it a powerful and effective AI for their needs. However, even some of these satisfied users experienced problems with their subscriptions or customer support, highlighting a disconnect between the perceived quality of the AI and the overall service experience.

Extravagant Price, Unusable for Visual Research

Billed $211.00 for an annual subscription based on its reputation for research, but it is an absolute trap for visual workflows. I use photo uploads as my primary research method for vintage jewelry. Within TWO HOURS of signing up, the AI capped my usage and claimed I hit a "month's worth" of photo searches. A one-year contract that becomes completely useless in 120 minutes is a broken product. To make it worse, customer support hid behind an automated refund policy and refused to fix this. Do not buy if you need image analysis.

Perplexity MAX Is An Unfunny Joke

We are a Perplexity MAX subscriber. The AI does GREAT work. But, IFFFF there are any Humans at Perplexity, they simply take subscription fees and then won’t reply to any emails. We have submitted multiple complaints ranging from the AI insisting we live where we do not, to our MAX subscription being told we maxed out our image submission limit after uploading fewer than thirty images. That’s ridiculous for a MAX client. We have received no reply from a Human at Perplexity regarding our issues. The chat bot only argues with us and demands sensitive personal info we would not give anyone on the internet, but ultimately says it will comply with a direct order from us to send our complaints to a Human. But no human ever contacts us after weeks of waiting. So, either the AI is lying and never sends our complaints to a Human, or the Humans are rudely ignoring a Perplexity MAX subscriber. (*former subscriber as we will not be renewing Perplexity). Either scenario shows that Perplexity is a terrible company which just happens to have a really great AI. Definitely won’t pay any longer for a MAX subscription just to lose hours arguing with an obstructionist chatbot and be ignored by “Humans”. Good Luck.

How Perplexity Turned a “Free” Year…

How Perplexity Turned a “Free” Year Into a nasty $322 Surprise
When I first signed up for Perplexity Pro through the Optus 12‑month complimentary offer, it felt like a no‑brainer. As a digital marketer and SEO consultant, having access to a premium AI assistant promised better research, faster content ideation, and a way to streamline my work across multiple client sites.

Optus and Perplexity marketed the free 12‑month Pro subscription as a value‑add worth around AUD $300, designed to showcase how powerful Perplexity could be. What they downplayed was what happens when that free period ends: you’re quietly converted onto a full annual plan, in USD, unless you happen to remember the exact renewal date and manually cancel in time.

That’s exactly how I ended up with a charge of 220 USD plus conversion fees, totalling more than AUD $320, without any meaningful chance to say “no thanks.”
btw - I DIDN'T get a renewal notice and am charging back thru my bank - if you have a subscription, good luck, I'd cancel it NOW

I absolutely loved Perplexity until…

I absolutely loved Perplexity until three days ago. All my threads, except for 8 went missing and the live agents had me doing the same things over and over, telling me I created my account with a different email. I use 1 email address! I had so many drafts of important documents and templates etc. I am completely lost and although the service team seems to be on it, they are not resolving anything as they keep telling me to do the exact same things. Why can't they restore them from the back end, since they keep telling me they aren't lost.

Perplexity scam user

I’m a paying Perplexity user and recently had a very disappointing experience with their credit system and support.

While using the Comet browser, I hit a hard block: “You’ve hit your limit for browser control tasks.” The interface made it seem like buying more credits would let me continue, so I purchased 5,000 Computer credits for $50. Within about 2 minutes I realized these credits do not remove that browser limit at all. The credits are still 100% unused.

I immediately asked support to cancel and refund this mistaken purchase. Their AI agent admitted the product design didn’t clearly explain the difference between the Comet limit and Computer credits, but still repeatedly refused a refund, saying that Computer credits are non‑refundable “regardless of whether they’ve been used,” and that their 24‑hour refund language only applies to subscriptions, not credits.

In other words, it’s very easy to buy the wrong thing because of confusing design, and even if you notice the mistake immediately and haven’t used anything, they will still keep the money. I’m now disputing the charge through my card issuer. If you use Perplexity, be extremely careful around credit purchases, because mistaken purchases apparently won’t be reversed even when reported right away.

DO NOT USE THIS

DO NOT USE THIS. IT TRICKS YOU INTO SUBSCRIBING. THEN WANTS MORE MONEY IF YOU TRY TO USE IT.
This company is a rip off. I was charged $199.99 for a one year subscription that I didn't want. I cancelled the subscription, but I can't get a refund. My account is supposed to be active until April 2027, but the system won't let use anything without paying more for credits.
There is NO customer support. I hate this crap and am trying to figure our which law enforcement or federal agency I need to contact to get this fixed.
DON'T get screwed like I did . DO NOT HIT THE "RESTORE" BUTTON! IT WILL CHARGE YOU FOR ANOTHER SUBSCRIPTION.

I really liked the perplexity until few weeks ago. Currently after each answer it switch back to "best", and chosen model is so bad that it can't properly write single words, quality have dropped and make it unusable. I'm moving to competition.

Good Product but Pathetic Customer and Management Support

Product: Definitely one of the best qualities. The important part is that they cite the sources. They scan the available online sources. You can also restrict the searches to academic sources, and the deep search is a great feature.

Service: Pathetic and terrible, especially the customer support chat service. There is no transparency about the content upload limit for training or customising your AI model. The support team is rude and unkind, treating their customers poorly. They do not care if the customer is saying something to improve. They always tend to sell their higher-end subscription product. They intend to sell higher-priced products all the time, which means they make it difficult to use your pro feature effectively, even though you are supposed to use it legitimately. If this company has to grow and sustain itself in the race of the AI market, they should take their customers seriously. Despite being a great product, their operating structure and management will make this company a nightmare for customers.

Refund policy is criminal

The automation was meh. Minimal tokens for a paid sub make it not a good value. Limited use you can get more elsewhere in terms of AI. They charge a full year upfront and they fight your for a refund. Abusive practices.

Lack of integrity and customer service

They gave me this ridiculously long free trial that I didn't realize I had. Then they started charging me, and I didn't realize I even had an account with them. Several months went by that they charged me before I noticed the charge. They would not refund me, even though I never used the application. And now, I never will.

Customer Care: ask your LLM to explain you what it is

I have not too many issues with the service, the website seemed to work OK, the models available were OK, the application for Android acceptable even though it was missing some functionalities available already for some time in the web version. However the customer service is a total disaster: I was able to talk with Sam and Phoebe, apparently two chatbot, and never got to speak with a human. Issues I resolved by themselves, it was most likely driven by bugs in their platform. But now it's 3 days to get my account restored to pro and, beside being told by Sam or Phoebe that they are experiencing a high volume of tickets and that the billing team has taken my ticker under their responsibilities, I have no clue how long it will take and in the meanwhile I have no access to continue my chats using the preferred LLM. Really disappointing. I would rather appreciate a better way of communication. I'm really considering looking at other solutions to because this is unacceptable.

Judgement after one year of pro subscription.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

If only there was 0 stars, deserved, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY, truly awful, logged me out remotely and blocked access on PRO account subscription, refused access to private data! (sensitive conversations) with financial info etc. totally dishonest, patronising untimely and awkward support, gave up in the end. Best avoided, much much better out there Free and paid, don't expect they will survive given their awfulness in this competitive sector, bye bye Perplexity, wear the TRUE bad press Sam.

VERY MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT PERPLEXITY

I’ve found Perplexity’s AI useful, but their customer support has been extremely unresponsive. I submitted multiple help requests and waited weeks without any reply, which forced me to cancel my Pro subscription. For a paid service, I expect at least basic acknowledgement and timely responses, and based on my experience I cannot recommend Perplexity to anyone who might need reliable support.

On a side note: Perplexity helped draft the paragraph above. The product is ideal for basic research, but it never tells you how many credits a deeper search will cost until after the fact. There is also no direct human contact. Perplexity.ai made mistakes in my information, confirmed that the errors were its own fault, and after I canceled my subscription (with special permission), it restored credits that had been deducted due to those AI errors. That is when I renewed.

Caution: if you use Perplexity.ai, ask in advance how many credits a deeper search might cost you.

Predatory upselling practices to their Pro subscribers

I upgraded to a Pro membership a couple of months ago before they started their current bait and switch, predatory, upselling tactics with their “Computer” product. They gave me 2,500 “free” credits. I selected the Sonnet model for research, not math or deep thinking reasoning. I never selected or used “Computer” for what should have been use of their search function. The model then frequently self selected “Computer” without asking me and burned through all 2,500 and I started getting warnings that I need to buy more credits. Perplexity used to be my go to AI for research but in their desperation or whatever you call their behavior they alienated yet another paying subscriber. It is unfortunate because I used to recommend this product but will not do so in the future. They really need to rethink their customer experience and how they could better support and treat their paid subscribers. I’ve lost trust in the company’s management.

I was using this tool about 6 months

I was using this tool about 6 months, than I decided to try to another AI. After cancelling, I got promotion 10$ instead of 20. I pushed continue subscription with promotion, and I was charged same 20$. Support ignored me for a month, after my notification they rejected to give refund or continue my subscription.
Feels like a fraud. I was disappointed and deleted my account.

COMPLETELY BREAKING AUSSIE LAW - 100% GRUBS

I gave them 1 star because there was no option to leave 0 stars. This company 100% of the time works against the laws and is solely focused on not giving you access to your data. They are grubby, give no care for you, only want your sub and HAVE zero respect for your data or your information. I hope they burn in hell!

This is the WORST AI experience I have…

This is the WORST AI experience I have ever had. We were on a roll, I paid for the subscription then it ways "we can't go to the next step until your account resets" I was like, what, I paid for a subscription, what do you mean. So basically paying does nothing, absolutely nothing. I do graphics of t-hirst, it said I can only do one graphic every 30 days. Ummm I run a business, paid for a business access and you are telling me I can only do 1 graphic every 30 days? I said well I have tokens, he basically told me, that means absolutely nothing. I contacted customer service, they were not nice at all, was shocked. Told me that it is what it is. I will not recommend or use this app ever again. Acted like "We don't need you so go somewhere else if you don't like it" , I said BS in a text to the customer service rep and got reprimanded telling me to watch my attitude or else. I WILL NEVER USE THIS APP AGAIN! Freaking crazy , they think they are untouchable, guess what, you are not and you won't last.
