Hello Michele RD, unfortunately, you haven’t provided your reservation number here, so we are unable to comment on your specific case.
It is not entirely accurate to say that there was a major fire at the hotel you booked. The correct information is that a major fire occurred at the neighboring sister property (Viva Wyndham Domenicus Beach).
The Viva Wyndham Domenicus Palace itself was not affected by the fire. The only accurate statement is that, as a result, the advertised shared use of certain areas of the sister property would not be possible for a certain period of time. Otherwise, the services at the Palace Resort itself were available without restriction. The beach at the Viva Wyndham Beach Resort also remained accessible, and the hotel management at the Palace additionally offered alternative dining options.
A trip to the resort you booked was therefore entirely possible. Nevertheless, we also offered free rebookings. It is true that the alternatives were not located in Bayahibe, but this was due to the current booking situation and the availability of rooms at our disposal. We did not pressure any of our guests to choose these alternatives or to reject them. We simply tried to offer our travelers alternatives at all.
We deeply regret that you now perceive all of this as an “absolute nightmare” and believe you see “corporate greed” in it.
Update regarding your additional comment: First of all, thank you very much for pointing out our typo (Dominicus). Thank you also for clarifying here that the fire did not occur at the hotel you booked, but at the neighboring sister property. Incidentally, we are still unable to provide any specific information regarding your case at this time, as we still do not know who you are. However, you are of course welcome to send us an email so that we can address your concerns and feedback in more detail.
update2: Yes, the option to use facilities at the sister property was part of the offer. However, some of these services—such as access to the beach or watersports-were still available. With regard to dining options, the hotel you booked provided additional in-house dining options and concepts due to the circumstances.
Against this background, in our opinion, there was no entitlement to cancel the booking free of charge, nor was there any entitlement to rebook to a significantly (!) more expensive alternative hotel. We understand that you have a different opinion on this matter and now suspect “corporate greed.” Nevertheless, we had offered alternatives at no extra charge, and depending on the actual restrictions, a reduction in the travel price could also be discussed. You are therefore still welcome to write to us so that we know who you actually are. However, it doesn't make sense to continue discussing your case here on this platform.
