When I went on Medicare 7 years ago
When I went on Medicare 7 years ago, I chose United Healthcare for my Medigap Insurance because United Healthcare is endorsed by AARP. I was under the mistaken impression that AARP had the interest of their customers, senior citizens, as a top priority. Two years ago, when I was informed by United Healthcare that my Medigap insurance would be increasing to over $290 a month, I decided to check into other policies. Since this is Medigap every company must offer the same coverage based on the Medigap plan (i.e. A, B, C, ... N). I contacted two companies and was offered the same coverage under plan N for $130 LESS than I was going to be paying United Healthcare. It is now two years later and I am still paying $110 less than I would have been paying United Healthcare 2 years ago. United Healthcare was paying AARP a royalty so they can be the "recommended" Medigap and Medicare Advantage providers. Three years ago, this royalty came to roughly $875 Million for the year. In 2024, United Healthcare has agreed to pay AARP $9 Billion for these rights for 12 years instead of a percentage royalty each year. So, if you are currently using United Healthcare for Medigap or Medicare Advantage, you should check out other companies like Cigna, Mutual of Omaha, Humana, or other companies depending on what is available in your state. As long as you can get coverage, you will save a bundle.
Also, CVS just entered a royalty agreement to allow Oak Street Health to be named AARP's trusted care provider of choice. The terms of this agreement have not been released but if you are under the impressions that AARP is looking out for your best interests as I once believed, forget it. AARP works with the highest bidder, regardless of how that affects their customers.

This organization is a scam and a rip off. How sad is it that they say they're for the elderly to make life easier and offer helpful discounts and deals. I'm sorry that I'm even subscribing to them the only thing keeping me paying for it is a good dental plan. I do not recommend anyone buying into this it's a lie and it's ridiculous. I purchased a Subway Gift Card a few weeks ago great deal, $20 for a $25 card. Went into two different Subway stores in my town and they would not accept it. When I contacted AARP two times they said contact the vendor that's not their problem and so on. This is really ridiculous what kind of like an organization is supposed to be for elderly people while they're just ripping you off and making lots of money. Do not I repeat do not subscribe ever
If I could put Zero I would
If I could put Zero I would. AARP Travel claims all sorts of benefit discounts when in reality we paid $245.00 more for our week than my sister. She booked with hotel directly. I went through AARP with it's many claims of discounts and savings. When I called to ask AARP why the hotel check out bill was $700 and AARP took $945 from our VISA he said it was for the Expedia booking fees that AARP collects. So while members report poor value, service issues, and frustration with pricing. There are hundred's of complaints about the program’s execution, misleading wording but its lawyers keep the tiny print so vague it does not constitute fraud. Just Beware!

I am SO SICK and tired of the email and junk snail mail I get from AARP. I block every of them but I want them to STOP. I wouldn't join them if they paid me.
TWO cases
Sad that negative stars cannot be awarded.
I had two cases that remained unresolved with AARP. One case pertained to their vehicle insurance carrier - The Hartford - and the other involving a demonstrably false article sent to their entire membership.
Throughout the complaint process, I have been repeatedly assured that someone would contact me to discuss these matters. To date, no one has followed through on those commitments. The lack of communication, ownership, and progress was unacceptable.
As a customer, I made every reasonable effort to work through the established process and exercised considerable patience while awaiting updates and resolution. However, after months and months and months and months of waiting, I have no confidence that these cases are being actively managed or that a satisfactory resolution is forthcoming. I have been swept under the proverbial carpet.
The failure to honor commitments, provide status updates, or communicate with me as promised has severely undermined my trust in AARP and its customer service process. Unfortunately, my experience now mirrors many of the negative reviews I have read, particularly those citing my own disappointments.
I even requested immediate escalation to management to review both cases, a clear explanation for the delays and lack of communication, and a definitive plan for resolution. I repeated my expectations to be contacted promptly with a status update and the specific actions being taken to bring these matters to closure.
When commitments are made and repeatedly ignored, trust is eroded. They simply don’t care.
You guessed it – they were not accommodating. I canceled my decade long membership, so here I sit sharing.
terrible they pray on seniors beware

AARP NOW app Crossword & Sudoku are bad
I used the AARP NOW app for Crossword & Sudoku. If you don’t finish a game/puzzle you can’t continue it later - they discard it. Very frustrating. You expect ads with free apps but some of theirs are obnoxious, long and some blare at you with the volume at max. I finally said enough and deleted the app. I might bring it back sometime and just not play any games with it.
This organization has lost its purpose…
This organization has lost its purpose and mission. After nearly 30 years of membership, we decided that we can no longer support this entity. They have done very little to support seniors like me and my issues, yet, they promote and celebrate individuals who in fact actively support either the policies or worse, the politicians who are determined to take hard-earned benefits from the very people this organization was supposed to protect. They are a lost cause and our contributions will go to more deserving groups.
False claims and no advocacy for seniors
Two experiences have made me believe that AARP does not do a good job for seniors. First, they endorse Consumer Cellular service and on TV advertisements say that AARP members get two lines for $55. This is false. I made the switch from T-mobile because they were raising our rates to $80 so I wanted to save $25 a month and switch. Consumer Cellular adds $18 in fees to the bill so I pay $73 a month, not $55 as AARP would have you believe.
Second - a recent ballot issue to raise property taxes has been put on the ballot in the county where I live. This tax, if approved will cost seniors significant amounts of money and not benefit them at all. I asked AARP to advocate for seniors and help to oppose the measure and they basically said they're too busy to help. Very disappointed in them.
Used their travel services to book a…
Used their travel services to book a flight and a car which promised 30 % discount and even though the booking was easy to do online, I tried to cancel one of the passengers for the flight which was literally impossible to do, then was told car rental would be $258.00 for the week and AARP charged me $652.86 and even though I called several times and sent them the receipt from Avis and from them and the charge on my credit card they refused to refund me the difference.
I could have booked the car with Avis myself and paid less than half for what they charged me. No discounts just ridiculously overpaid.
When I called them needless to say I had to call 4 times wait for someone the first time that never came back on the phone, the other times they just kept apologizing but did nothing even though they could see clearly in the paperwork what I was complaining about. Needless to say the frustration of trying to have a conversation with someone that you can hardly understand.
Lesson learned.
Absurd, to be sure
Wow! I never expected to see so many reviews, and so negative at that. AARP is a big FAIL. They neglected to get my membership started, but immediately sent life insurance offers to purchase. Weeks later I called to get the ball running, had to deal with a really not smart AI system, followed by a rep. whose English was far too difficult to decipher to be fielding customer service calls. She transferred me to dead space, or maybe the next rep. Picked up but has me holding on mute just to get a break he/she is not entitled too. Finally, the app. is a fail as well because the email to verify my account was set up never arrived. So that makes AARP 0:7? I lost count. So idiotic a company adept at losing customers cannot be in my purview for good or services.
Cancellation Difficult
Company is asking for a lawsuit. They don’t make it easy at all to cancel. They have renew buttons everywhere and you can search preferences and various tabs for days and not find a clear cancel button. I had to call in to cancel and when I tried to have the lady make a report for customer feedback on the issue she rushed me off the phone. There are laws in place to make cancelation easy without confusing prompts and AARP fails here.
Massive amount of mail
I get at least one renewal notice per week from these people and sometimes 2. It’s shameful how many forests they burn down to send out all their mailings.
I was a member for several years and…
I was a member for several years and cancelled about a year ago because I wasn't really using their services. Decided to give it another try, but when I went to renew, the website kept giving me a payment error, even though my credit card company confirmed payment, and then confirmed payment refund. Did this twice, so I called customer service. Got someone from customer service who had a heavy foreign accent and I couldn't understand a word she said. During an exhaustive conversation trying to understand her, I finally gave up. Entirely. I give up on AARP. Not worth the effort.
Paid with debit card over the phone on…
Paid with debit card over the phone on 7/02/26 for the amount of $10.80, they took out $21.60 without consent! Absolutely stealing! Paid at 8:08am # S-870451586 Called back at 8:56am to file a complaint once I saw my bank statement on 7/02 as well. I amwas told that a full refund in the amount of $21.60 would be returned to my card. Incident # S-870450232. 7/13/26 at 5:18pm I called back to find the status of my refund. I was told that no complaint was ever filed and the incident was faked. It did not exist. This lady claimed that her name was Amy and she claims she has to get authorization for a refund which can take up to 10 business days to get approval. New incident # I-570070226. I also requested the complaint dept phone number. She provided me with 800-828-5979, which appears to be scam related...... 7/14/26 8:13am I called again today to be sure that my complaints were properly filed. The individual claiming to be Alan, claims he could not understand me and stated I would have to call back in another 2 hours if I wanted to speak to a supervisor. Overall, AARP is stealing and I am highly dissatisfied of my service! Contemplating on filing a policy report as well and I absolutely will be leaving a negative review!
