Account terminated without reasoning; do NOT recommend
I do NOT recommend Bitstamp. My account was suddenly terminated without any explanation, despite the fact that I had not used the account for years other than the initial deposit. There is no reasonable basis for any alleged violation of their terms and conditions.
Bitstamp states that it reserves the right to terminate customer relationships unilaterally and without providing meaningful justification. Their customer service is highly unprofessional, extremely slow to respond, and very difficult to reach. As a customer, you are left with little recourse and no clear communication.
Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Bitstamp.

In the USA, we have a saying: "If we don't take care of our customers, someone else will". I now have accounts set up with several of Bitstamp (and Robinhood) competitors and EVERY ONE OF THEM is so much better than Bitstamp in every way possible.
Too bad negative stars isn't a possible rating.
Verified account restricted, no reply from support for a weeks
TICKET #BIT-2358502
I’ve had a Bitstamp account for several years and never had any serious issues before. The funds were deposited via SEPA back in 2021 from my personal bank account.
Bitstamp asked me to re-verify my documents and my EU residence. I completed the verification, and the documents were accepted. But my account is still restricted. I can’t trade, I can’t deposit, and most importantly, I can’t withdraw.
To be honest, I don’t understand what’s going on. If Bitstamp needs anything else from me, I’m ready to provide it: source of funds, bank statements, tax documents, proof of SEPA transfers, whatever is reasonable. But I need someone to actually tell me what is missing.
The problem is that support is not replying. I opened a ticket and sent emails, but I still don’t have a clear answer, a timeline, an explanation, or a list of documents they still need. Several weeks have passed with no real response.
How are we supposed to use a service like this?
At this point, I’m genuinely worried. This is a significant amount of money for me, and it’s extremely frustrating to have everything frozen without any clear explanation. I’m not asking for special treatment. I just want someone to review the case and tell me exactly what is needed to lift the restrictions, or at least allow me to withdraw the funds back to my verified SEPA bank account.
I have also sent a formal complaint to Bitstamp, but I haven’t received any meaningful response yet.
Is there anyone from Bitstamp here who can please take a look and escalate this?
Thanks!

Frozen accounts
Without going into detail, if you are a small trader don’t bother as they don’t really want you, froze my account, didn’t accept any of my explanation why I invested slightly over what i stated i would invested, nether did they accept my id.
absolutely disscussting customer service, three months later they closed my account just when bitcoin was at near bottom with my loss of £3k, beware!!!

BE CAREFUL before you sign up with them... Very concerning experience with Bitstamp.
I’ve been fully verified since 2022, but since 2025 I’ve had repeated issues withdrawing my funds. Despite providing all requested documents, my account is still restricted with no clear timeline.
Support is slow and gives generic, inconsistent responses.
Based on my experience, I would strongly advise others to be cautious when using this platform.

Not great, but not as horrific as for some others. Good and bad.
Recently had the experience of an account being frozen due to KYC/AML (actually it was a SoW issue).
Summary - the experience with customer support & complaints dept. was slow, their comms were extremely very vague with no real answers to questions ... HOWEVER, I did get my account and funds unfrozen after around 3 weeks, so it wasn't the total nighmare that some others have had to endure.
This was despite some of the crypto deposits having been obtained many years ago, so the info I could provide was probably not ideal from the gummint / regulator / bureaucrat point of view.
If I'd been asked to rate Bitstamp before this recent experience, I would have given it 5 out of 5! There ARE some things to like about Bitstamp:
- Fees, spreads etc are low
- Prices are correct as far as I see
- Day to day the trading engine is rock solid
- Never had any real problems in 6 years before this
- Information provided which eventually did unfreeze
my account, was not overly extensive or difficult
Back to the recent experience. Tips:
1./ After a couple of weeks of slow and vague Customer Service responses and after reading a lot of helpful (and scary) Reddit posts, I decided to escalate to a Complaint. Don't know if this helped, but I suspect it did.
2./ Keep it polite. The people who work there are just doing a job, probably a very difficult one because of the systems in place (which let's not forget were insisted on by regulators, who are part of the establishment, and actually may not really have user's best interests at heart).
3./ If you receive a warning message saying that some KYC / AML / SoW information will shortly be required, MINIMISE your funds held on the exchange WITHOUT DELAY. Do it same day! (Unfortunately many people are probably only going to read this after their account has actually been frozen and they are in the support nightmare).
4./ It is not clear to me even after the experience whether Bitstamp actually may have a major liquidity problem (April 2026) and is delaying customer access to funds as a result; or whether they just have a really poor customer service procedure and / or due to KYC/AML being genuinely tricky with regulator demands and "old funds" being difficult to evidence.
Of course if it's the former, that would indicate they might be comingling customer funds with exchange funds, which is the most serious possible NO-NO. It's hard to believe that Bitstamp in particular, would risk trashing their legitimacy and reputation (which was excellent years ago) with a move as seriously illegal as that. Maybe it's possible if their profits from degens have evaporated, profits from responsible users don't wash their face, and they are going to quit before full regulation... of course, I'm just speculating here, obviously I DON'T KNOW!
If the latter (just poor support system) then this has been going on for years and it's way past time that Bitstamp should get their act together, beef up manpower to reduce delays, incorporate much more helpful and informative messaging, including detail on EXACTLY what information is being asked for in the specific case, provide some statistics on how long the process / freeze is likely to take at the outset, etc etc. And make sure customer funds are never withheld for unreasonably long periods... the target should be a few days at the most.
Time will tell.
Very disappointing support experience.
Very disappointing support experience.
Responses are extremely slow, and when they finally reply, it is usually just generic standard messages that do not address the actual questions asked.
I have already uploaded the requested documents multiple times, yet the issue remains unresolved.
Meanwhile, my account has been frozen and withdrawals have been blocked, without any clear explanation or proper assistance.
A financial platform should offer faster, competent, and case-specific support. This experience has been unacceptable.
Froze bitcoin for 22 working days due to minor issue.
Freeze funds for minor issues. Can't give lead time for when unfreezing. Non-customer facing department deal with it and no one can give you an accurate answer. Froze my bitcoin for 22 working days even though I jumped through all the kyc/aml hoops immediately. Final insult was blocking me on X for respectfully asking for resolution. Will NEVER use again. Went to Kraken. Bitstamp is a P.o.S exchange.
Not a scam but terrible customer…
Not a scam but terrible customer support and verification procedure. I was verified customer and they suddenly asked for reverification - that took almost 6 months where they asked very private documentation. During that time my assets were frozen.
I would not recommend that service.
heads-up for anyone attempting to use the once trusted service …
25/03/26 heads-up for anyone attempting to use bitstamp: I’m experiencing major issues withdrawing funds that I moved from cold storage. Despite a long history of successful and trusted transactions with bitstamp, my withdrawals are now bouncing back to my bitstamp wallet with no explanation provided, I've lost around 50GBP on failed attempts to withdraw my funds today.

Bitstamp has been extremely frustrating and financially damaging
Bitstamp terminated my account without explanation after confirming it was in good standing. Because of this, I was forced to sell my Bitcoin at a bad time and lost about 40% of my investment. Customer support refused to provide any reason, citing “confidentiality.” Very concerning experience.

Stole Funds
They froze my account for a year for no reason, rarely responded as I chased and would not let me withdraw.
They then forced shut my account without reaching out and only shut the account and liquidated my funds once the market rate was lower than what I had purchased. They refused to respond to legal action and they refused to assist or justify to their behaviour or pay back.
Total SCAM !

I'm frightened they'll keep my money.
I have to admit, it appears this company has gone down hill since it was took over by Robinhood and KYC has been implemented. Or rather the KYC has been poorly used, as it seems to take a shoot first ask questions later approach. It's the same story everyone else is giving, withdrawals and deposits blocked for no reason even though I've been a loyal customer for about 10 years. "Submit more evidence for this" "submit more evidence for that". It certainly seems like perhaps their systems are automatically blocking accounts?
Luckily I can at least still buy and sell if the market moves using the money already on there but I'm so scared that my money will just end up being stuck in their hands even though it is genuine and legitimately obtained. Honestly, customer support is vague and feels like the responses are copy and paste, and it feels like I've got to climb a mountain to prove im a legitimate investor. I know KYC is new but I'm scared now after all these other reviews. It's sad to give such a low rating because they were brilliant and prompt up until recently. However this is a reflection of how I feel at this moment, I know it will probably be okay and there's probably a delay from the volume of people having KYC issues but it's very scary.
The silliest part is that you can buy coins from THEM, and they still will block you from moving them.. either asking you to prove funds or confirm origin of a different crypto sent in from Binance for example. If you've sent them like 5 bitcoin from some random address you've never used, fair enough, maybe put that particular transaction on hold, but when they can clearly see, you bought coins from them from your bank account from them, why are they blocking you withdrawing in GBP or moving those coins? If you state you will invest up to $10,000 for example, please dont go over accidently buying crashes, you'll trigger a KYC review.
I will change this review if this issue is resolved.
*UPDATE*
The problem has gotten worse, I now cant even sell my crypto if I wanted to because they've now also disabled trading and there hasn't been any response from bistamp, I can't do anything at all and im just stuck until they reply which could take God knows how long. Appalling. It has to be their systems automatically blocking you because no human can be so silly? I was literally just waiting for them to reply from March 4th after sending info and trading was blocked today on the 25th?
The only mild saving grace is that they did respond to my complaint and new support ticket promptly, so it doesn't seem like they're avoiding me, I just hope I have trading reactivated again at the very least because its not fair.

Don't trust them
Don't trust them. They are scammers. First they block your money, then they ask you to prove your identity, income, tax number, and other personal information. Even after providing all the requested information, they still don't enable the account.
Update 03/12/2026
Bitstamp by Robinhood contacted me again through the Trustpilot website, asking for the same information that I had already sent them before.
It seems that they only care about their reputation on social media, while at the same time they “screw over” their customers.

Hi everyone Be careful with them! Suddenly they don't let me withdraw the coins.. They told me they need to do verification. I provided them with everything they asked for (ID, bank confirmation, etc.) and they still don't let me withdraw the coins for a month now that it's under review. Coins that I bought from them. Really cheeky and looks like a "bite". I told them Danny is going to post it online and I see Danny is not the only one. Does anyone know what's going on there?
