This is the worst insurance…
This is the worst insurance company—stay away. I planned to start my policy with Hippo+ on October 31, but I was charged immediately for more than a month in advance. That would have been fine if the charge had appeared in my payment history, but it didn't. I tried calling and couldn't reach anyone. I called Hippo, and they couldn't reach Hippo+ either.
I demanded to cancel, but was given the runaround. Eventually, a representative called. I requested a refund and cancellation. I received the refund, but my policy was not canceled. A week later, I had to call and tell them not to issue a second refund because I had already received one.
I called again to confirm the policy was canceled and waited on hold for an hour and a half. When I finally reached someone, I was told that despite requesting cancellation right after the refund, I still had to sign a cancellation document to make it effective—even though the policy wasn’t supposed to begin until the end of October.
This company gives customers the runaround, and reaching someone is a major challenge.
Do not work with Hippo
My experience with Hippo was absolutely unacceptable. This was not simply poor customer service. The underwriting process was inaccurate, judgmental, and deeply offensive.
As part of the inspection process, I was required to provide photographs and videos of my home, including the interior. I complied with their instructions in good faith. Their inspection report then repeatedly misinterpreted what they were looking at and used those misinterpretations to make sweeping claims that our home showed signs of vacancy, neglect, and deferred maintenance.
For example, our brick home was repeatedly described as having extensive painted wood siding. Shade cloth near our air-conditioning unit was misconstrued as a tarp covering a blocked and therefore missing window. They stated that there were no vehicles on the property as evidence of vacancy, despite never asking me to photograph our driveway or anything near our driveway. They also claimed there were no signs of active occupancy despite having videos of the interior of my fully furnished home, which clearly showed evidence that an entire family lives there.
Our home is older but we recently replaced all of our windows and our sliding glass door through Renewal by Andersen at a ridiculous cost. The windows are beautiful privacy glass, which is specifically why you cannot simply look through them from outside, and the fact that we have curtains. Their report characterized them as dirty (they're not, they're dark) and used the inability to see clearly inside (due to the privacy coating and curtains) as evidence of vacancy. There were, in fact, viaible houseplants and things close enough to be seen through the windows in the photographs and videos.
I responded to their report in detail and explained the factual inaccuracies point by point. Their response completely missed the point. Rather than addressing the inaccuracies I identified, they told me there was “confusion surrounding the location” of the photographs. There was no confusion about where the photographs were taken. They simply misunderstood what they were looking at and then failed to comprehend the explanation when I corrected them.
That was the final straw.
The entire process felt invasive and deeply violating. You are asking people to open up their private homes to an insurance company, and there should be a basic expectation of accuracy, objectivity, and respect. Instead, I felt that my home and the way my family lives were being judged based on a handful of photographs and videos.
We are a family living in an older rural home, raising our children, and caring for our animals. Our home does not look like a perfectly manicured suburban model home, and apparently that was enough for Hippo to make sweeping assumptions about whether we actually live there and whether we take care of it.
I would never knowingly give my money to a company that treats prospective customers this way, and I will never recommend Hippo to anyone. The way this inspection and underwriting process was handled was unacceptable from beginning to end.

Customer service was the big win here
Customer service was the big win here. Hayley provided literally the most empathetic, caring, and compassionate experience I've had with a home insurance person in my 44 years of life. Give her a raise and then multiply it times ten. Seriously. My policy rates skyrocketed this year from (apparently) all the crazy natural disasters taking place and while I am sympathetic/empathetic with everyone suffering from that, it's up to you (yes YOU, Hippo) to diversify your financials apart from everyone else in this industry to not force your policyholders to carry the bag for you when shit hits the fan (pardon my french). Hayley helped me revise my policy so that it didn't break the bank and maintained affordability without shopping other providers. Again, that woman is worth her weight in gold on an exponential level. SHE alone is the reason I'm giving you above a 2 star rating.
