I recently completed the advanced professional diplomain addiction studies course and found it both engaging and informative.
The cours offered range of interesting topics that encouraged learning and discussion within the group.
Mike and John taught us and both were excellent. The knowledge and experience between them is second to none.
Overall, it was an excellent course and I would highly recommend it to anyone who would like to gain a deeper understanding of addiction and how it affects the mind and body. I will definitely be completing another course in the future.

Regarding different learning styles, people often mistake me for a theorist! However, in fact, I am a reflector 🙂.
I am sitting here working and smiling to myself at that sentence in your letter. You mention “mind and body”, which immediately brings to mind the enduring mind–body question in psychoanalysis and psychology more broadly. While the brain is, of course, part of the body, the question of where, or even what, the mind is remains far more complex. It is a question that remains open within psychoanalytic thought, as well as within many other psychological and philosophical traditions. I am not sure we will ever discover precisely where the mind exists.
It also reminds me of an essay I graded yesterday on Freudian psychoanalytic theory, particularly regarding the body, the ego, unconscious processes, and how bodily experience may be represented, displaced, or expressed in psychic life. Freud’s observation that “the ego is first and foremost a bodily ego” is especially relevant here, as it suggests that the ego is not detached from the body, but is formed in relation to bodily sensation, perception, and experience (Freud, 1923, SE XIX, p. 26).
Lacanian psychoanalysis develops this question further by distinguishing among the Symbolic, the Imaginary, and the Real. In Lacanian terms, the body is not simply a biological organism; it is also a body caught in language, desire, signification, and jouissance. At the same time, aspects of bodily experience may remain resistant to symbolisation. They may therefore be understood in relation to the register of the Real: that which cannot be fully captured, represented, or resolved through language (Lacan, 1972–1973/1998).
In other words, there is a fascinating question here concerning what can be symbolised and spoken, and what remains outside language, expressed instead through the body, silence, symptom, or the unspoken. This is precisely why the relationship between mind and body remains such an important and unresolved question within both Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic thought.

I recently completed a fantastic addiction course and found it both engaging and informative. The course was very well run, with a wide range of interesting topics that encouraged learning and discussion.
Mike and John were excellent facilitators, bringing knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to every session. I particularly enjoyed exploring the theories of Freud and Jung, which added a fascinating psychological perspective to understanding addiction and recovery.
Overall, it was an excellent course that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of addiction and human behaviour.

P.S. You forgot to mention Dr Rik Loose and his book, The Subject of Addiction: Psychoanalysis and the Administration of Enjoyment. I had the privilege of being taught by Dr Loose during my own training, and he is not only an excellent lecturer but also a significant author in the field of psychoanalysis and addiction. The book is available on your Moodle LMS page and is well worth returning to for this discussion.
You may remember Freud’s theory of the pleasure principle, particularly as developed in “Formulations on the Two Principles of Mental Functioning” (Freud, 1911, SE XII, pp. 213–226), and later reconsidered in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (Freud, 1920, SE XVIII, pp. 1–64). In simple terms, the pleasure principle concerns the psyche’s tendency to seek pleasure and avoid unpleasure. However, in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Freud complicates this idea by identifying forms of repetition, compulsion, suffering, and drive that cannot be explained purely by the pursuit of ordinary pleasure.
This is where the later Lacanian concept of jouissance becomes especially important. Lacan develops Freud’s insights by showing that enjoyment is not always the same as pleasure. Jouissance may involve an excessive or painful form of enjoyment: something that exceeds the pleasure principle and may carry consequences for the subject. In this sense, jouissance can be thought of, in simplified terms, as enjoyment beyond ordinary pleasure, or as pleasure with consequences (Lacan, 1959–1960/1992; Lacan, 1972–1973/1998).
It may also remind you of Freud’s essay “The ‘Uncanny’”, where he explores the strange experience of something being both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time (Freud, 1919, SE XVII, pp. 217–256). That is perhaps why these psychoanalytic ideas can feel humorous, puzzling, and unsettling all at once: they often involve opposites that seem to coexist, such as pleasure and pain, familiarity and strangeness, or desire and consequence.
And, of course, we must not forget poor Jacques Lacan, the French psychoanalyst who plays such a pivotal role in post-Freudian psychoanalytic thought. While Freud introduced and developed the theory of the pleasure principle, Lacan reformulated the question of pleasure, desire and drive through the concept of jouissance. Although jouissance is an ordinary French word, Lacan gives it a distinct psychoanalytic meaning, linking it to enjoyment, excess, the body, language, and the subject’s relation to desire.
So, in summary, Freud gives us the pleasure principle and then complicates it in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, while Lacan develops this further through jouissance. Rik Loose’s work on addiction is especially relevant here because addiction can be understood not simply as the pursuit of pleasure, but as a relation to enjoyment, repetition and consequence.

I recently completed the December intake of the Professional Diploma in Trauma-Informed Intervention for Counsellors, Psychotherapists & Allied Healthcare Professionals at ICPS College, and I can honestly say it was a fantastic experience.
The course was exceptionally well structured, combining strong theoretical foundations with practical, real-world applications that I could immediately integrate into my professional practice.

BE CAUTIOUS. The founder/academic director changed the terms and conditions during the course and expected us to abide by them. These conditions included that no student was allowed to speak to each other unless it was in the WhatsApp group that the founder was in, which is highly unethical and left students fearful of speaking up about concerns to each other. I also received private messages from the founder asking if I wanted have a psychotherapy session with him. Please research the course's "accreditations" (ICPA/ICPHAA) and the ICPS's academic director.
I was unenrolled from the course and issued a refund, which was never honoured, and ICPS emailed me stating they would only honour the refund (issued 17 days prior) if I removed my negative review from this platform.

Do your research before paying for anything
I recently took 5 modules of a 10 module CPD in traumatology. I had serious ethical concerns with the way the course was run and the college founder so much so I chose not to complete the course and asked for a refund. Changes terms, conditions and policies on a whim to foster secrecy and a lack of transparency. Spends most of his time in modules talking about himself/clients. When I asked to speak to this person directly about these concerns I received quite threatening emails from a “college administrator”
Also please check the accreditation of the college and course tutors before signing up and screenshot the terms and conditions as they can change on a whim!
Furthermore I had been issued a refund by the college which never came through, when I questioned this I received an email denying a refund was issued even though I have proof of this.
With regard to the reply below:
1. A refund from stripe was issued to me on May 26th 2026 but no money ever hit my account. I was never told a refund could not or would not be issued. This matter however has now been referred to the fraud unit of my bank and is also being investigated by the gardaì.
2. The terms and conditions pdf file issued by the college was only issued after I asked for a refund on 26th of May.
3. I have tried from the beginning to communicate with the college on the two emails they have mentioned and have been very patient with them and have actually been told not to contact them again.
4. With regards to the modules, although Michael the “college founder” only gave one module himself he did “ shadow” the lecturer for two other modules and consistently interrupted for long periods to talk about himself or try to convince us to sign up to his “accreditation” body.
I do have proof of all of this.

Was apprenshive before I joined the online course however after the first night within minutes of our lecturer John, I knew I had made the right decision, the group,and the content were made all the more comfortable by John who set the most supportive tone. 😀

I have attended my first session on the compassionate mindfulness and resilience course and I am very impressed so far. The course content and materials are very beneficial and in depth. The course is easy to follow and the lecturer is lovely and very passionate about his teaching and content. I am looking forward to the remainder of the course and would encourage others to sign up!
