A Price Promise worth looking at more closely
I approached ITS intending to spend more than £5,000 on DeWalt equipment and genuinely expected to place the complete order with them.
During the process I ended up comparing the exact products and packages across several other UK tool retailers. DeWalt subsequently confirmed directly to me that the retailers I was considering were authorised DeWalt retailers.
That comparison completely changed my view of the value of the ITS Price Promise.
ITS limits its Price Promise to Screwfix and Toolstation. That limitation is not my criticism. Customers can read the terms for themselves.
What interested me was what happened when I looked beyond those two retailers. I found identical DeWalt equipment available from other authorised retailers at prices which, across an order of this size, made a significant difference.
That raises an obvious question for me. If some of the most price-competitive authorised retailers sit outside a Price Promise, how much reassurance should a customer actually take from that promise when deciding whether they need to compare prices themselves?
I nearly didn't.
I was ready to spend more than £5,000 with ITS because I wanted the convenience of buying everything from one place. It was only because my experience led me to start checking the exact model numbers and packages elsewhere that I discovered the difference.
To ITS's credit, towards the end of the process I received considerably better assistance. My quotation was reviewed, errors were corrected, a clear breakdown was eventually provided and an attempt was made to improve the overall price. I appreciated that and it is important that my review reflects it.
Unfortunately, even after that, the overall difference remained too large for me to justify keeping the complete order with ITS.
I am not going to tell anybody where they should or shouldn't buy their tools. I can only explain what happened when I took the time to compare the exact same equipment across authorised retailers.
I certainly know what I will do before placing a substantial tool order in future.
