Avoid The Hartford For Auto Insurance

Switched my auto insurance to Hartford in February after hearing they had special discounts for AARP customers. In May my wife's doctor told her that she could no longer drive anymore. So I called customer service to tell them that we would need to take her name off the policy since she would no longer be driving. The customer service person told me they would take care of it. A couple of weeks later I went in thru their App to check my policy and saw that it had been flagged for cancelation. Called customer service to find out why policy was flagged for cancelation, and I was not notified. Customer Service told me it was a underwriting decision, and could not give me anymore information about it. I ask the person on the line if I could speak to a manager about this. She told me a manager would call me in the next 48 hours. Nobody ever did. I have had auto insurance for over 50 years, and have never experienced this kind of service or conduct. AARP should be ashamed promoting this company. I will never buy insurance again online only with a local agent. If this story let's others considering Hartford to think twice before getting auto insurance thru them. Then writing all this down was worth the time.

Fraud: they find a reason to not honor your claim.

They sold me flood insurance for $600 only to deny my claim when I actually had 1" of water in my condominium. They have all this small print that excludes coverage based on almost anything they can dream up. God forbid they actually insure my property for water damage completely beyond my control. Then I can't cancel the policy, which is bull shit.

Small business insurance

have had small business insurance through The Hartford For 13 years,
On June26th, I filed a claim for loss of revenue, the claims department said I would get 67% of the revenue we lost for the month we were out of business.
A week later the claim was denied, because someone at the hartford did not do my audit properly. I have been calling every few weeks to get the paperwork fixed fixed an updated.
Now that the paperwork is updated, they won't backdate so I can get paid out on my claim. They refuse to backdate it even though it was their fault that nobody updated my policy properly, very upset customer.

This company is awful

This company is awful. I filed my FMLA on Aug. 25th. I along with my doctor have filed all necessary paperwork. I have not received payment, nor have I received an update. No one can give me an answer. Jodi Shields is supposed to be my rep and she has not returned my call in over a month. Her supervisor Jessica has also not returned my call. I have begun filing a lawsuit and paperwork will be served naming Jodi and Jessica. AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE.

After years of paying on time with the automatic payment our credit card expired and instead of calling us the company cancelled our policy. We didn't have any idea until until the sent us a letter. A month after the policy was cancelled 😭.
Unfortunately this company changed management or something because this situation is becoming a normal procedure with Hartford Insurance company for the past few months.

After years of being insured with…

After years of being insured with Hartford, I finally had to leave because of the constant runaround and problems with my workers’ compensation audits.

This year was the final straw. I provided my tax documents, completed the audit, and submitted everything they requested\. Despite that, Hartford changed my classification code and calculated a premium that was nearly THREE TIMES what I had normally been paying.

I contacted them multiple times trying to get the audit and classification corrected, but instead of getting the issue resolved, I continued getting passed around and receiving different information.

I eventually canceled the policy and went with another insurance company. Then Hartford charged me nearly $3,000 related to the cancellation short rate calculation. What made this even more frustrating was the way they determined the effective cancellation period, resulting in what amounted to an outrageous charge associated with essentially one day of coverage.

I am a solo business owner with no employees and very limited payroll exposure. I am not even required to carry workers’ compensation insurance for myself, yet I chose to carry coverage responsibly. After years as a customer, I expected much better treatment.

My audit/classification dispute is STILL not completely resolved
Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Hartford for a small business. If you are self employed or a very small business, I strongly suggest comparing other insurance companies before choosing Hartford. I wish I had done it sooner

I called this company a few years ago…

I called this company a few years ago to get a home/car bundle. I was unable to do that due to having fuses instead of a breaker box. That was the only hold up. Now I have had a breaker box put in. After an hour on the phone I was told i was not eligle because I have a small section of flat roof coming from my upstairs patio doors. The roof was just ripped out an replaced with high quality material. They could give me no reason other than I was ineligible because its flat. I would not recommend this company and the reps are not very knowledgeable.

I’m not letting this go!

I am deeply disappointed with the lack of action taken by the insurance company regarding the coverage deductions from my check for nearly a year. Despite filing a claim for my accident insurance, I was informed that I do not have coverage. I have provided them with proof of coverage, including check stubs, but my inquiries have consistently received the same response: "| will look into it." This situation is extremely frustrating, as I am unable to speak with someone who can take immediate action. I am considering filing a lawsuit against the insurance company to recover my funds or settle my claim. Tamica Stokes

DO NOT GET HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE WITH THE HARTFORD

I have been going back and forth with Hartford Insurance Company for 10 months, and they still haven't refunded me the $1500 I am owed. My mortgage company had already paid for the year from September 28th 2025-September 28th 2026. Since December 10th 2025 I cancelled my insurance with them, and notified them via phone call. They informed me that I need to have my new insurance company send a declaration stating that I've switched insurance due to Hartford's high premiums. My new insurance company gave them the paperwork on January 10th 2026, and when I called to inquire about my refund, they told me they didn't receive it. They then sent them the declaration again two weeks later, and they still said they didn't receive. My insurance company had to send the Hartford my declaration a total of five times over the span of 9 months because "they didn't receive it". After all of these months, it is now September, they are just now informing me that the best way to navigate this situation is to make an account on their website, and upload my cancellation documentation there. So that's what I did! I talked to a representative last week, and she informed me that they received it however it takes 24 hours to reply. 7 days later, and I have heard nothing from them.

Each representative I speak to is giving me conflicting information. There seemed to be no communication or notes left behind the scenes. I had to tell each person I've talked to over the past 10 months the same story over and over again. They are giving me a hard time and they are holding onto my money. I personally feel they just don't want to pay me, and that is why I've received this treatment. Nobody cancelling with an insurance company should ever have to wait this long for a refund! I should start charging them a 25% interest rate at this point. When you ask to directly speak to the department you need to, they tell you that you can't and that everything is done through the computer. Ludacris!

This company does NOT provide cheaper insurance for 60+ individuals with a clean driving record/No accidents & no DUIs. They charge the same as any other insurance company out there or are comparable. The advertising on TV is false advertisement & you have to have AARP to get insured by this company. I've found no benefits that I will use. Even Denny's who is one of the businesses that allow AARP, there are restrictions & you cannot use on anything but regular priced items that are really high priced. Seniors don't get a lot of money & we should be able to use AARP w/o restrictions!!!

ZERO STARS

We would give zero stars if possible, the absolute worst!!! I did an auto and homeowners policy online and no great discount even for AARP. Then we receive a letter in the mail that they will suspend our auto collision and comprehensive if we did not perform a CARGO inspection with a weeks time, meanwhile the place they recommend near our home was not available until three days after their deadline. Now I am reinstating with our prior company and we have no auto insurance until my prior company reinstates our policy. Their customer service is nonexistent and the CARGO deadline is ridiculous and it should be against the law to pull your auto insurance for this reason, especially if you have a verified appt. STAY AWAY from this horrible company, I will cremate them with bad reviews on the internet and with friends every chance I get!!!

Surprise, we're not paying!

While my entire world financially crumbles around me during an injury, they failed to mention anywhere whatsoever the apparent "1-week elimination," which is an excuse they have to not pay out for disability. I received less than half of what I was promised, and now I'm not sure if I'll even make rent. When I called to seek resolution, the soulless representative did nothing for me but notify me of this for the very first time.

THE HARTFORD IS THE WORSE

The Hartford is WELL DESERVING OF THE 1 STAR RATING. The Hartford Renter's Insurance is a RACKET. The Hartford's pattern and routine is to collect premiums and make all excuses not to pay out. I reported stolen property, WHICH IS COVERED UNDER ITS RENTER'S POLICY, GOT A POLICE REPORT, AND THE HARTFORD ONLY PAID ME $475 FROM MY $60,000+ RENTER'S POLICY. NO REASON GIVEN. How is it the Police Department investigates and merits giving me a police report to legitimize the crime of my stolen property, but The Hartford denies my claim. MY ONLY CLAIM IN OVER 15 YEARS. Then my property is damaged in my LOCKED storage unit by rodents. AGAIN, MY CLAIM DENIED AGAIN. IT IS JUST THE SAME AS ME NOT HAVING RENTER'S INSURANCE. WHEN A CUSTOMER OBTAINS A POLICE REPORT FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, CLAIMS SHOULD BE PAID OUT. DON'T GET RENTER'S INSURANCE FROM THE HARTFORD. ALL THEY DO IS COLLECT PREMIUMS AND MAKE EVERY EXCUSE TO NOT PAY OUT.

GET BACK TO THE OFFICE!

I needed a quote. Went through filling in the online from, just to have me call them. The guy on the phone was nice enough, but the 22 minute conversation was unbearable. Kids screaming in the background, pots and pans, and other indiscernible noises were making the whole conversation (on his end) very difficult to hear/understand. Countless requests (on my end) to repeat himself were getting annoying. He started the conversation by saying the usual "we'll be recording this conversation for quality purposes. . .". Well, some executive needs to listen to this crap. What quality?!?! Seriously! I think we've all had enough of the very unprofessional "work from home" calls. Get your weak & spineless employees back to the office. You want my hard earned money? Then earn it! I've lost count of people eating, cooking, roosters crowing, kids screaming, people driving distracted and various other animals being the soundtrack of "professionalism". And no, I won't be contributing to your profits for you to continue this absurdity.

I called Hartford-AARP auto claims for…

I called Hartford-AARP auto claims for "advice ONLY I specifically said I do NOT want to file a claim" but the system requires that Hartford AARP immediately open a claim when you call they DO NOT MAKE you aware of this. I rec'd letter stating claim was filed I called Lead Manager Amy she was very abrupt did not listen, cut me off, was condescending, said the process is set up to protect Hartford from being sued. I called the adjuster, Michael, he listened, explained very professionally that the claim was just a technical step to allow him to give me advice and it was not a real claim. The first lady did not minimize my stress and tell me this from the start - instead she repeatedly said "Oh we would never tell you that we have to open a claim to speak with you."???OMG... Michael listened when I said I described that as a consumer we should be informed of this process BEFORE ANY CLAIM is started, as in my case I only needed information. That first lady was an example of how NOT to communicate. She had very bad customer service, and Michael de-escalated with the information I needed to helped me understand - the main message is this process is horrible to start a claim without your knowledge or agreement. I immediately called that Jerry ai app and they found major national carrier Prudential at 1/3 the cost with MORE COVERAGE, seriously.

I like the employees

I like the employees, but the hartford phone AI recording system sounds so so rude and would put any customer off and also confuses the customer. If you get in ana accident you get thousands of letters with figures on it and showing what was cover but then not covered or says still under review followed by customer care saying verbally but not in writing not to worry that everything is being paid for. if your car is gone you can rent one but need to pay a fee which was shocking as customers need to get to doctors and felt isolated in recovery. i still use them until i recover.
