RUN FAR AWAY 🏃‍♂️

Despicable Customer Service With Dishonest and Conniving Employees. Reserved Rental with 3rd Party Insurance As Required Under Mexican Law. Staff REFUSED To Accept Insurance and Wanted A $1500 Deposit With No Guarantee Deposit Would Be Returned. This Experience RUINED Our Vacation As We Could NOT Engage In Other Activities Which Required Transportation.

Took $3400 for broken tail light

Someone hit my hire car and broke the tail light when parked in supermarket. Thrifty told me they would take $1000 from my card when I dropped it back. When I got back home they had taken $3400 from my barclaycard. No explanation for what the money is for and no damage invoice. Impossible to get an information or appeal. Avoid this company.

STAY CLEAR of Thrifty Car Rental

When we arrived to pick up our car at Thrifty car rental at Puerto Vallarta Airport which we pre booked and confirmed pricing and payment arrangements, they added a courtesy fee that was nearly three times the amount of the booking itself stating this was not insurance but a fee that would allow us access to police and repair reports in the event there was damage to the vehicle during our rental. STAY CLEAR of Thrifty’s car rental.

Shameful behaviour from Thrifty

On 14 September 2023 I booked a rental of an SUV from San Jose del Cabo airport for the period 3rd to 12th November through a price comparison website. I paid £151.31 in advance for the rental.

When I arrived at San Jose del Cabo airport on 3rd November I proceeded to the Thrifty desk in the baggage hall. I was told I would be met by a Thrifty representative outside. When I left the airport the Thrifty representative informed me that Thrifty had no cars available and I should come back the following day to see whether anything had changed. He could not guarantee there would be a car available then, but in any event this was not possible as my wife and I were not staying in the area – we had rented a villa three hours to the north. The Thrifty representative said there was nothing he could do, and suggested I rent a car with another company. He then introduced me to a Europcar representative, who said Europcar had a car available for the period 3-12 November for USD700. When I asked the Thrifty representative whether Thrifty would cover this cost, he said they would not. I asked the Thrifty representative to let me speak with his manager, but he declined. Having no choice, I rented the vehicle from Europcar. My brother-in-law had also rented an SUV for the same trip and was told by Thrifty that they had cancelled his reservation because he had arrived at the desk 20 minutes late due to a flight delay.

I will obviously never rent with Thrifty again. Their behavior in this case has been shameful. They seem to care little about honouring their contractual obligations, or for the significant costs that their customers have to bear as a result.

Absolutely appalling service

Absolutely appalling service. Reserved a car and showed up to the Oaxaca airport and they didn't have it. In their T&C apparently says subject to availability which means they are happy to take a reservation and payment without actually committing to providing the car. Offer me a waiting list to get the car i reserved 5 days after!!

Save yourself the pain an avoid the company. Just so angry and disgusted.

Extortion attempt

Avoid this company by all means.
On 14/08/2022, we rented on line on the Thrifty Car Rental website a Category L / Standard SUV car from the period from 16/08/2022 to 26/08/2022 for the amount of MX$ 5402.24, totally paid upfront through my American Express card.
On 15/08/2022, we visited the Thrifty/Hertz office at CDMX Campos Eliseos to check that everything was in order for this reservation and that there would be no surprise on the next day.
We were given assurances that everything would be organised for the next day.
I left my mobile phone number in Mexico in order to be contacted, should there be any problem.
On 16/08/2022, when we arrived at the Campos Eliseos office at 9:30 am, we were told us that a car was available but that it was of a higher category and that we had to pay additional fees amounting to MX$ 1,000 per day or MX$ 10,000 for the total rental duration, in other words an increase of about 200%.
This is clearly a rip off or extortion attempt.
We were also told that, if we did not pay this amount, we would not receive any car.
Extorsion and blackmailing are simply not acceptable and constitute very serious unethical behaviour and we refused to pay any additional fees and requested a refund which was received within the next 4 days together with a standard letter offering us a one day voucher. In view of the seriousness of the issue, this definitely looks like a joke.
We wrote emails both to the CEO of Thrifty Mexico and to the CEO of Hertz in the USA to complain about this highly unethical commercial behaviour. Without surprise, both remained unreplied.

Booked a car at the Cancun Airport…

Booked a car at the Cancun Airport itself. Prices where lower than online (big difference). I saw low ratings for most rental companies including Thrifty so I was hesitant at first but they offered full insurance for free. The rental was actually performed by Hertz and everything went smoothly. The car was good, the service was decent and we did not get screwed by anyone. Also the car was as promised.

Forced extra charges

Company forced to take additional liability insurance to release the car indicating that the liability insurance clearly included in my rental was insufficient.

If it was possible to give this company…

If it was possible to give this company 0 stars I would. Avoid this shixxty so-called car rental company at all cost! We arrived at 13.00 Dec 29 and had reserved and pre-payed the booking at Thrifty Playa Del Carmen. We even arrived one hour before our pick-up but was told by the agents that no car was available and was put on a waiting list with over 30 other people! What is the point of prepaying and book a car in advance? We had lots of luggage and a 2-year old baby with us and had to take a taxi to Mahahual. This completely destroyed our vacation. What a disgrace! I have never had any problems in Europe, this is just the worst car rental experience ever!!!

DO NOT under any circumstances rent from Thrifty

DO NOT under any circumstances rent from this company! We arrived in Cabo San Lucas on Wednesday 8/30 and rented from them with "100% coverage". We were unaware that we were arriving just ahead of tropical storm Lidia. We drove 30 min to our hotel and parked the rental about 2hours before it began to rain. We were hotel bound all day Thursday and into Friday as the storm hit our area hard. We were evacuated from our hotel on Friday morning by military police. On Saturday we returned to our hotel on foot to retrieve the rental, but the water had risen and there was mud in the vehicle. I called Thrifty upon our return to the new hotel and turned in the keys to the car; however, I was extremely distressed by their customer service. It was non-existent, not once did they ask if everyone is ok. They immediately requested another credit card and stated I might be liable for the car if they had to take a loss but could not guarantee anything until the car was evaluated. What happened to 100%coverage!!! It was a natural disaster, how am I liable?? They never disclosed any exceptions and you would think 100% means 100% right?
Their lack of service and deceptive practices are unacceptable. They charged my card again without authorization and have held my funds illegally! Their business license should be revoked.

NOT recommendable

We rented a mini-van for 12 day but ended up returning it after 7 days. Less than a day after we picked it up we had a flat tire. We found out that there was a big hole on the inside of the front tire which they had tried to hide with a quick-fix. Luckily the tire didn't explode while driving 130 km/hour on the freeway! It took three days and lots of phone calls before we were able to have it fixed (new tire) and we had to pay and they would then refund the money when returning the van. So as soon as we got back to Mexico City we returned the van and the damaged tire as well!!
Be aware that the full cover insurance is very expensive, but you don't want to rent a car in Mexico without it. In our case the rent was 10.000 pesos, and then the full cover costed 15.000 pesos! So a total amount of 25.000 pesos. But don't forget to bargain, we saved 2000 pesos without pushing them very much.
