The best reference manager, made by researchers and non-profit!

I've been using Zotero for about 15 years and, while it was already really useful at the time, it has improved so much in the past few years, with more regular updates that do not add useless or bulky features but instead make the program work more efficiently. So I thought it was time to give back and say how much I love Zotero!
You can use it to gather references (for example, research papers, including the actual pdf of the article), organise them, tag them, add notes to them while reading, export the notes, and most importantly cite the references in any format you want in a host of programs (Word, Libre Office, google documents..).
The only drawback at this stage is that it doesn't work with Word Online, but apparently they're working on it.
Oh, and I forgot: it's open-source, and from a non-profit organisation, which should mean you can use it with with a clean conscience :)
Thanks Zotero for being around! Please do not change :)

Awesome application

Awesome application for the researchers.
This application has saved me so much time with citations and references while writing my research papers.

Kudos to all the teams who developed this application.

SO useful!!!

SO useful!!!
Such a great application to store and organise academic references. Only found it in 3rd year of uni (devastating) and it's been such a lifesaver!! Gone are the days of having a million tabs open for weeks on end until an essay was done! Don't know how I'd have written my dissertation without it honestly.

Great reference-keeping software. Big file size though.

This is very useful software for any academic or student. It's a simple way to keep track of and use references in your papers. My only real complaint is that it is a HUGE program for what it does, 350mb. This should be refactored to be about 20% as big. Takes up way too much room on your system. Please update it to modern standards and reduce the size to something reasonable.

I don't understand why people like this…

I don't understand why people like this application. The only thing it can do effectively is store files, making it about as useful as the bookmark feature standard on any internet browser. It rarely adds citations correctly, both in-text and in the bibliography. Three times now I have had my entire bibliography deleted by the Zotero application on various documents because I put them in manually thanks to the inefficiency of the application. That is hours of work completely unretrievable, replaced by the inaccurate and incomplete versions Zotero automatically puts in. They have no customer service staff, only a "discussions board" lacking an FAQ.

I would not recommend.

Excellent reference manager tool

Have used other tools: refman, calibre, endnote, cite - but Zotero is the best. Free if you have a smaller database. If you wish to store pdf's and videos in the z-cloud, you have to pay a reasonable fee for space. I feel it's worth it.
Zotero has the usual reference facilities, but in addition is very useful and easy, when you wish to index a webpage - and if it is structured by reference standards then that is stored. And with the pdf version automatically added if you have access to it at the site. Very nice.
You can search and import from ISBN.
And a group can share their references.
Is works with Libre Office, OpenOffice and MS office. (a bit difficult with google docs, but this is a google issue). Add references to your manuscript, generate bibliography. Oh - so easy.
In my world - i would not do without it.
