88 Film's online store is a complete mess, with non-existent customer support.
They constantly mess up orders from EU customers regarding IOSS/VAT matters, and instead of finding solutions, they proceed to ignore emails and complaints, or try to come up with all sorts of excuses, in order to avoid making matters right with their customers, and refund undue VAT fees that are a complete result of their incompetence.
If you are located in the EU, use their store at your own peril. And be prepared to pay VAT twice, once to them (they are IOSS registered, and collect VAT under your local rate), and then again to your local customs (since they then fail to properly follow through with their IOSS formalities). Plus be prepared for overly inflated declared amounts (and the resulting VAT that comes from it), because they "forget" to reflect discounts during sales on their customs forms. How about that?
On this last order alone, between the VAT they collected when I placed my order, and the lovely VAT bill I had to pay to my local customs (over the amount they declared, which is far more than what I actually paid 88 Films for the items), the amount I paid of VAT in total is very close to the item's value.
So far, 88 Films failed to take any responsibility for yet another mess with undue VAT bills, nor did they try to make things right in any way, and refund me for these undue fees that are a complete result of yet another failure from them. In this particular case, it was close to 60€ of extra fees.
Every other UK label I know where something like this happens is quickly to take responsibility over it, and fix things with their customers. But not 88 Films, that's not the way they do customer service. It's better to just ignore people, in hopes they take the loss, and shut up about it.
Sadly, this IOSS problem with EU orders isn't something that's just affecting me, many EU users are reporting the same problem with their recently placed orders.
This order has easily turned into the worse shopping experience I ever had by shopping directly from a label.
Mistakes happen, but then, those who make them need to step forward, and do things right.
But again, not 88 Films. It's easier to just ignore emails, and hope people forget about it.
I won’t get into detail about the discs themselves, suffice to say that I’ve always found them of excellent quality in terms of picture and extras. On that front they are always to be recommended.
I’ve recently had a couple of minor issues which have meant that I’ve had to get in touch with their customer services. On both occasions my problem has been dealt with promptly and on the day of my email. It is an excellent service and no one should hesitate to get in touch with them if they too encounter any issues.
Excellent company great quality products.
My only gripe is trying to log in as the spambot software is buggy when i try to verify I am a human & won't log me in despite answering the question & receiving a green tick I am human.
This needs fixing ASAP.
88 Films offer some of the best box sets for Asian cinema. I've ordered multiple times from them and the goods always arrive well packaged.
The only issues I've experienced are one time I ordered the limited edition of a film and the standard version arrived. Plus, recently there have been a few delays which I've been told has been due to a warehouse move. The good thing is that they were very prompt in answering any emails I sent.
Overall if you're going to buy a 88 Films release then it's definitely worth buying direct from their website.
88 Films web site.
Terrible.
It was a fierst time for me. Tried to place an order for various blu rays - using a Mac - with bot Firefox and Safari. Took an age to be able to place the order, the site was not in the least uswr friendly - then, on both browsers it would not let me pay !! Tried sending an email to customer service, even that did not work - just an asterix, and the clear button.
Will not. bother using again far too much hassle. Will look to spoen my money with someone who can, in the year of 2022, actualy have a working USER FRIENDLY web site. !
UTTER RUBBISH !!
88 Films were always a good company for Blu-rays in the cult/exploitation field but they really increased over the last two years with even better product quality and service. Their website is not perfect and it takes a bit too long until pre-orders are on offer but you got the feeling that they care about their customers. I´m from the EU and the company was that fair to warn ordering directly from their site when they experienced some problems and better use other dealers (zavvi etc.) at that time.
I wish they had a form where you could request future movie titles on their page.
Yesterday I received my order from your team. The item in question was "The Young Master" and you put such love into this release. Keep up the excellent work Richard and James.
Best wishes
My review is specifically for:
88-films on myshopify.com
The website is not really mobile friendly and doesn't allow for login. Otherwise the website is easy to use.
The shipping took roughly two weeks to Sweden during Corona times.
It seems like the website is run by either one or just a couple of people, based on how long it takes for them to reply to emails.
Their films' covers are designed for the collector in mind with numbered spines based on release number. They generally publish lesser known titles which would otherwise be difficult to acquire physically.
