0 Stars - Abbeycar Thessaloniki: Unsafe Cars and Disgraceful Service

Easily the worst and most dangerous car hire experience we’ve ever had.

We arrived to collect our rental and immediately noticed engine management and oil warning lights lit up on the dashboard. When we took the car straight back, the desk agent admitted she already knew about the problem and gave a series of excuses — “just a bulb,” “a sensor,” “the catalytic converter.” Not once did she confirm the vehicle was safe, nor offer any paperwork or explanation. She tried to push us to take it even despite us explaining it wasn’t safe or legal to drive a car like that.

She then checked two more cars, both with the same faults, and told us “all cars have this problem.” She said that they did not have any cars without warning lights. The attitude was appalling — rude, dismissive and completely unconcerned about customer safety. When we refused to drive a clearly unroadworthy car and it would result in bad reviews, she shouted at us, “Are you serious right now?”

Abbycar left us stranded, forcing us to pay for a last-minute €350 hire with Europcar up the road plus taxi costs to get there. Thankfully, Discover Cars (who we originally booked through) were contacted after and secured a full refund and reimbursement, but Abbycar themselves have shown zero integrity, zero accountability and zero concern for safety.

Abbycar is knowingly renting out unsafe vehicles and gaslighting customers who refuse to risk their lives driving them. This company should not be allowed to operate.
Avoid them at all costs.

despite having bought full insurance…

despite having bought full insurance coverage we were charged with further € 300.- for travelling on a ferry boat in a country full of islands and for a very minor scratch they could not even prove that has been made by us. All this to be paid immediately under constriction because, otherwise, they would not bring us to the airport with the shuttle, thus loosing the flight.
we had a flat tyre and the support we received from their assistance (in the middle of nowhere) was: "this is not covered by us you should repair it"
WILL NEVER BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY AGAIN

Never again!!!!!

Booked a hire car through car8 a third party who directed me to Abbycar in Zante, Greece. Was advised I’d get a Hyundai or similar. Arrived to find I was given a very small Citroen. When we complained we were told it was the “or similar” car. I asked to upgrade and was told it would cost more money which I was happy to pay. They then said there was nothing available and to come back in 2/3 days. We did and were given an old Suzuki. The interior door was ripped and the material hanging off. The bodywork was dented and scratched. The window wipers were shredded. The interior was dirty which is ironic as I was told not to get sand in the car! They really couldn’t be bothered with us at all. I would not recommend this company at all they just want your money and don’t care what they give you.

Not recommended at all & there's more…

Not recommended at all & there's more than one reason why.
You don't pick up your car just outside the terminal building as they imply. Instead you're greeted by an uninterested unhelpful employee is a shed, who advises you to wait until you're picked up to go to where you really pick up the car.
You'll then be collected by another equally uninterested & unprofessional employee, who will spend the whole time on the phone (on loud speaker to his mate) and take the short ride to the garage / shed & parking lot on the edge of a main road.
Then the next delightful employee will try and con you out of more money whilst signing the paperwork for your car.
Heaven forbid the name on your credit card doesn't match exactly the name when you booked the car. Expect some BS excuse about insurance & then a request for even more money.
Our car although newish sounded like a bag of nails & had quite a few niggly issues. It was safe though.
Don't be fooled by cheap prices & their description of services. Go with some one reputable & enjoy more of your holiday.

Scammers

We reserved a car for 7:00 PM, but our flight was delayed for five hours, and the office was already closed. The next morning, we arrived at the office and they wouldn't give us a car because we were one day late, even though the car was booked and paid for four days. Scammers.

We hired a car from saranda port in albania. They have friendly staff. Good cars to hire. Only small issue we had is waiting for our deposit back which took nearly one month. Apart from that I highly recommend abbycar and will definitely use them in the future

I would stay away from this car rental…

I would stay away from this car rental company. We had booked a car with the lowest category fully comprehensive insurance. Upon arrival, the owner of the rental company strongly advised us to purchase additional fully comprehensive insurance, arguing that we had booked through a third-party provider, and if something were to happen, he wouldn't get the money from the third-party provider and we'd have to cover the entire damage ourselves! When we jokingly said that we didn't want to take out additional insurance for €60 per day, the owner of the car rental company got furious and cursed at us. After apologizing several times in Greek, we got the vehicle without having to purchase the threatened additional insurance. I advise everyone to beware of these rip-off schemes, which are unfortunately common in Greece. Furthermore, the rental car voucher must be presented in printed form, and a credit card secured with a PIN must be present in the name of the driver.

Avoid AbbyCar – Poor Practices Both Locally and Internationally

I want to warn future customers about my experience with AbbyCar. What should have been a straightforward car rental in Montenegro turned into a nightmare because of unfair charging practices, unsafe vehicles, and a complete lack of customer service.

The local office blocked deposits and added unexplained charges, while the car itself was not safe to drive. When I raised these issues, the local staff told me that only AbbyCar International could resolve them. Unfortunately, contacting the central office was even worse: my emails were ignored, no clear explanation was given, and they showed no willingness to help.

For weeks I was left without access to a large amount of my own money, causing stress and financial difficulties during my trip. Instead of taking responsibility, both the local and the international offices tried to push the problem away.

👉 My advice to travelers: avoid AbbyCar altogether. If you must use them, be extremely careful — check every charge, keep all receipts, and don’t expect support if something goes wrong.

No professional company should treat customers like this. I regret giving them my money, but I hope this review helps others avoid the same mistake.

Extremely bad service. Unwilling to find other solutions to help the customer

Even though the terms mentioned a credit card was needed for the deposit, Carjet still accepted my debit card for payment without a clear warning. At pick-up, ABBYCAR refused three other debit cards and cash for the deposit, leaving me completely stranded with no support. I lost my prepaid amount and had to rent another car from another company, who didn't have problem with our cards and cash, at a much higher price. Extremely disappointing experience and very poor customer service – unfair and misleading!

🚨 I paid to rent a car with AbbyCar Rentals for my vacation… and ended up with a wreck, €200 stolen, and a complete scam with zero customer service. 🚨

⚠️ Scam, danger, and radio silence: my nightmare experience with AbbyCar Rentals Santorini

On August 9th, I arrived in Santorini, excited to start my holidays.
I picked up a car booked via Carjet (ref. CJT-184715214) with the AbbyCar Santorini Airport franchise.

On paper, everything looked fine.
In reality, it was the beginning of a nightmare.

❌ The car delivered: an old Peugeot 208.
• Broken windshield wipers.
• Fuel gauge not working.
• Overall condition: unacceptable.

💳 Security deposit charged: €500.

The very next day, the car broke down:
• Clutch failure.
• Battery died.
➡️ Vehicle stranded on the roadside, putting our safety at risk.

After 2 hours waiting, a representative named “Elvis” (no last name given) brought us a replacement car…

And what a replacement:
• A dirty Clio with almost no fuel.
• Faulty brakes, soft pedal.
• Wipers broken again.

Basically: a ticking time bomb on Santorini’s winding roads.



📅 On August 14th, at drop-off, the representative suddenly announced:
👉 €150 deduction for fuel (even though the gauge never worked).
When I refused, he changed his story: “the streets were too narrow to provide assistance.”

Result?
€200 taken from my deposit.
No receipt. No proof. No explanation.



Since then, I’ve contacted AbbyCar through:
• Their official website (complaint submitted),
• LinkedIn,
• Facebook.

Result ➡️ Total silence for over a week.
No response. No customer service.



So I now ask publicly:

❓ How can an international company rent such dangerous cars?
❓ How can they arbitrarily keep customers’ money with made-up excuses?
❓ How can they completely ignore formal complaints?
❓Maybe Vasilis Mouros can help me to resolve the situation ? 🤔

Looking at the hundreds of negative reviews online, it’s clear this is not an isolated case… but a well-oiled system of abuse.

If you travel to Santorini prefer companies like Hertz, SIXT or Europcar . I never have such problems with them



👉 Today, AbbyCar has stolen €200 from me and put my safety at risk.
And given their silence, I have no doubt left: this company operates like a scam.

🔎 AbbyCar, I am calling you out publicly: will you finally respond and refund?
⚠️ Travelers: be warned. Behind their “attractive deals” lies a mechanism of organized fraud.

A disgrace to the car rental industry.
A danger to customers everywhere.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

We booked a hire car for 9 days and although it says you need a credit card, it does say on their website if you don’t have a credit card you can buy additional insurance at the reception upon collecting the car. We don’t have a credit card and were not willing to open a credit card just for this, especially when the website says that you can avoid this by purchasing the additional insurance. I also didn’t want to get a credit card for this after seeing several reviews stating they don’t give you the desposit back and this is around £1400. When we arrived at the location in Heraklion, they refused to offer additional insurance and said as we don’t have a credit card we were unable to take the car. The staff member at the pick up was so rude. We spoke to the supervisor who was also rude and wouldn’t let us buy the additional insurance, despite me reiterating several times that their website says you can do this. Customer service also did not answer the phone. We were sat there for 2 hours trying to sort this and all of the staff were unprofessional, rude and unhelpful. We had no choice but to walk away with no car as this was wasting our holiday and they clearly weren’t going to help us resolve this. I’ve also sent an online query regarding this with no reply. Do not use this company!!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! As soon as we got the car they charged €1700 euros to our card, aswell as a transaction fee of €20 they impose for transactions. We dropped our car off and apparently we went ‘off road’ meanwhile the ‘off road’ was the road to our apartments. They charged us a €365 ‘off road fee’ even though they have the ability to track the car. Beware of we’re you go as they track you. The staff would not take any responsibility and we’re disrespectful towards us trying to get our money back that had been conned out of us. We also payed for us to pick up and drop the car off at the airport which they also did not do - very untrustworthy and unprofessional. Do not recommend. Additionally while we were in their office trying to make sense of the situation, people next to us had the exact same problem except they were charged €400 for a late fee of 2 hours that they were not told of. Aswell they had just arrived for their holiday and abbycars had given their car they hired to someone else - they are left without the car they payed for. Think very carefully about using this company, not the stress you need on your holiday.

We made the huge mistake of renting a…

We made the huge mistake of renting a car from Abbycar. Before renting, they explicitly guaranteed that the so-called full insurance would cover everything, including windshield and window damages. They also told us the insurance would cost €95 for 4 days.

However, when we went to pick up the car, they suddenly demanded €150 for the insurance and then claimed that the full insurance does not even cover glass damages. This was a blatant scam. Naturally, we refused these new and dishonest conditions. After arguing for 1.5 hours with their head office, we could not reach an agreement.

But since their office is located on a highway in the middle of nowhere, we had no other choice. Out of desperation, we accepted their terrible terms just to get the car. At that point, the woman working there — clearly unprofessional and manipulative — told us she had “cancelled” our rental and refused to give us the car. She did this deliberately to put us in a desperate situation. In reality, she never even cancelled it in the system; it was simply a malicious move to trap us.

As a result, we had to go back to the airport and rent another car last-minute at FOUR TIMES the original cost. This was intentional fraud and humiliation.

While we were there, we also witnessed many other customers arguing with the same woman. She was charging people for scratches and dents that they clearly hadn’t caused. This is nothing but a massive scam operation.

⚠️ Avoid Abbycar at all costs! They are deceitful, predatory, and should not be trusted under any circumstances.

I rented a car in July at PDL Azores…

I rented a car in July at PDL Azores location for 5 days. The reservation site nor the emailed voucher did not provide true information about that the actual car pick up is offsite, far from the airport, 5km at a petrol station in an island highway and far from the city itself. We had to call and wait for 40 minutes before being picked up as they consolidated 3 passenger flights into an old courtesy van without AC. The Abbycar site opening hours are not suitable for customers with PDL flights before 10AM nor arriving after 4PM, and only if you pay a steep e50 surcharge would they agree on an early car dropoff with courtesy van. The total price charged ended up being higher than the more competitive car rentals within the PDL terminal. The personnel at the station was not friendly at all. The only positive was that the car was clean.

Absolute shocking and wish I read the reviews prior to booking. Unfortunately I was in a rush and guess what… due to being in a rush I picked what I thought was an affordable car for 4 days.

Was a quick easy process taking my money £200+ paid via debit card and the order was confirmed.

Flew over to Crete- Chania, located the service desk ‘Abbycar rental’. Staff were rude, and insisted I needed a credit card for a deposit?

Nowhere was it highlighted that a credit card would be required like other car rentals. Instead they tuck it away in like section 9 of the t&c’s.

Had they have stated like others on payment ‘credit card required’ I wouldn’t have purchased.

Rang up to express my dissatisfaction about the credit card, and I was shut down immediately, obviously implying that the company always have these complaints regarding credit card queries.

PLEASE NEVER USE THIS COMPANY. Never thought I would get scammed. They’ve made thousands from this scam it’s crazy 🤣🤣

SCAM SCAM , run of this rent a car..

Good afternoon,
I want to express my deep dissatisfaction with your service at the Athens airport rent-a-car. I have never been treated so badly and robbed as I was with your car rental company.

I hired your services, including the PREMIUM package, which on your website stated that I was covered for any damage to the car.

I picked up the car at around 9 p.m., and the staff, clearly in a rush to leave, carried out a vehicle inspection so superficial that it was impossible to properly see anything. I didn’t worry much because, having purchased the PREMIUM service, I shouldn’t have to care about scratches or damages.

As soon as I left the rental office, I noticed the front wheel making a strange noise, like a stone stuck in the tire. I ignored it and continued my journey to central Athens.

The next day, on the 19th, I didn’t use the car and traveled by metro instead. On the 20th, I checked the wheel and realized the noise was caused by a screw stuck in the tire.

I called the agency, and the arrogant staff member told me I had two options: either go to a workshop and pay for the repair, or they would charge me the full price of the wheel. Now I understand why, even with the PREMIUM service, I had to leave a €150 deposit, which according to your website is meant only for fuel if the car is not returned with a full tank. But in reality, it’s a scam—those €150 are just a way for you to take people’s money in the most dishonest and mafia-like manner possible.

So I had no choice but to go to a workshop to fix the tire.

I used the car for 10 days. At some point, a bush or something similar caused a small scratch on the car. It was minor, and I didn’t worry because I had purchased the PREMIUM service, which guaranteed I was covered for any damage.

Now, to my astonishment, your arrogant employee forced me to pay €150 for that scratch. I argued that I had bought the PREMIUM package, but with complete disrespect, she raised her voice at me.

I refused to play her game. Since I don’t speak Greek, I refrained from arguing further and paid. But I did not pay willingly—I was ROBBED. I WAS ROBBED by your agency.

I will wait to see if you deduct the money from my account, and with legal support, I will report your agency for fraud, theft, mafia practices, dishonesty, and lying.

The least you can do is return the money that was stolen from me.

I won’t become richer or poorer because of €150, but what’s at stake here is seriousness and integrity. I will expose your agency on every platform, joining the countless others..

Scam and abuse

Scam and abuse! I booked a car in a higher category but was given a lower one. They charged me a hidden “boat fee” of €150 (twice!), and later €470 for a tiny scratch that could have been removed with a simple polish. On top of that, I had to wait more than 40 minutes for their shuttle under the burning sun at the airport.

This company is dishonest, manipulates prices, and takes advantage of customers. My previous experience even ended with my credit card being hacked after a payment with them.

Avoid at all costs — nothing but scammers!

My wife and three children had been looking forward to our holiday all year and we had booked our car through Abby Car several months in advance.

After flyting from London we arrived in Athens in the evening and were left waiting in the car park trying to find AC taxi service. After calling them they then left us waiting for another 30 minutes before collecting us.

When we finally arrived to collect our car the receptionist accused us of being late after leaving us in the car park!

My wife had uploaded my details as the driver (which they could not see on there system), so wanted to charge us an extra 100gpb to add myself. When finally giving in to this request even after showing them the proof they then requested a credit card for a security deposit, but they would not take my wife's AMEX or our joint credit card it had to be a different one in her name.

We lost our whole 11 day rental fee that had been paid and to top it off the woman behind reception was extremely rude and unhelpful. It was the worst introduction to GREECE but we had a four hour drive with three kids and it was already getting late. Surprise surprise though, their taxi driver knew another smaller company down the road where we could pay another 850gbp for a car hire.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY - GO TO A MAIN DEALER AT THE AIRPORT.
