SCAM - Don't buy their "unlimited" plans, you won't get what you paid for!

I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with Ahrefs' customer support and their unfair, opaque restriction policies.

My workspace has 5 paid accounts, and two of them were abruptly restricted/blocked by their automated system. When I asked support (Julia) which exact terms of service were violated, they admitted that they do not have fixed numerical limits (like X requests per minute or Y reports per day) written in their Terms of Service. Instead, they hide behind vague phrases like "usage patterns exceeding typical user activity."

When I pointed out that my request rate averages out to roughly one click every 10 seconds (performed manually through the UI, perfectly fitting a normal human pace), they simply repeated automated bot-like responses. To make matters worse, they told me that even if I do not violate anything right now, the system will keep the account restricted for 1 to 2 weeks (essentially until the end of the billing cycle), and they refuse to lift it manually.

So, let's get this straight:

You advertise "unlimited access with no credit limits."

You penalize users for working fast or intensively, calling it "suspicious" even if it's completely manual.

You refuse to state clear rules or limits anywhere in your ToS so customers actually know what they are allowed to do.

You take people's money for paid subscriptions and leave accounts locked/restricted for weeks with zero manual support intervention.

This is essentially paying for a service and getting locked out because your internal automated heuristics feel like a user is working too efficiently. If you have a cap on how many reports an active SEO specialist can view per day on a standard plan, put it clearly in your pricing page instead of hiding behind arbitrary algorithmic bans.

Terrible experience, zero accountability, and daylight robbery of prepaid subscription days. Avoid if you actually plan on doing heavy SEO work.

Hi, we’re sorry to hear about your experience.

Ahrefs’ unlimited plans don’t use credits for standard usage, but they are still subject to our fair use policy, as mentioned on our pricing page. Restrictions may be applied automatically when activity significantly exceeds typical human usage patterns, including unusually intensive activity over a short period of time.

These restrictions are temporary and are lifted automatically. They are not something our Support team can manually remove or override.

We appreciate you sharing your feedback with us and can assure you that we take it seriously. We use feedback like this to continue improving our systems, including how these restrictions are applied and communicated.

Suspicious activity detected

I bought the 250 USD per month plan. It worked great for initial 10 days after that constant restrictions called "Suspicious activity". Support cant do anything from lifting the restrictions to telling why this is happening and when asked why they have their reasons ready. "We do not provide the specific reasons to avoid abuse of our tool." They let you talk to a bot initially, and even emails are replied to by bots, which is even more frustrating. From a month-long subscription,

I will not be able to use the tools for 2 weeks. Why? coz my usage is too much. They advertise the plan as unlimited. If you use it like it is unlimited, they ban you from using them.

I agree that there must be many people trying to misuse their service. They really need to work on their detection systems.

Hello!

We’re sorry to hear about your experience.

Our abuse prevention systems are designed to protect both our platform and customers from unauthorized or high-risk activity. In some cases, restrictions may be applied automatically when certain patterns are detected. For security reasons, we’re unable to disclose the exact signals or triggers behind these decisions.

We understand this can be frustrating and we appreciate the feedback regarding both the detection system and support experience. Improving the accuracy of these systems while maintaining platform security is something we continuously work on.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

Constant “Suspicious Activity” Errors – Service Unusable

I’ve been using Ahrefs for my SEO work, but lately it has become almost impossible to use.

I constantly get the error:
“Suspicious activity detected. Your usage activity indicates potential violations of our terms…”

The problem is that I am using the tool normally — no automation, no abuse — just regular SEO analysis. Yet access to reports keeps getting blocked for no clear reason.

This makes the service completely unreliable for professional work. You never know when you’ll be locked out again.

I contacted support multiple times, but instead of resolving the issue, they gave generic responses and did not fix anything. Even worse, they refused to provide a refund, despite the fact that the tool is essentially unusable.

For such an expensive service, this is unacceptable.

At this point, I cannot recommend Ahrefs to anyone who relies on стабильную работу инструментов. There are better alternatives that actually respect their users.

Hi there,

We understand how disruptive it can be to run into repeated access issues.

“Suspicious activity” restrictions are triggered automatically when usage patterns match signals associated with potential misuse. These systems are designed to protect the platform and all users, and they don’t rely on a single action or manual decision.

While this can be frustrating, it doesn’t necessarily mean there was intentional misuse — only that certain activity patterns were flagged by the system.

Our support team can review the situation, explain what may be causing these triggers, and suggest how to avoid them going forward. They aren’t able to override these protections, but they can help clarify what’s happening.

Title: Paying for a Service I Can't Use - Ahrefs' "Suspicious Activity" Nightmare

My Experience with Ahrefs Support:
I'm a paying customer who recently shifted my business focus to analyzing expired domains for purchase and resale. This is 100% legitimate business use.
The Problem:
Despite STAYING WITHIN MY PAID PLAN LIMITS, Ahrefs keeps flagging my account for "suspicious activity" and restricting my access daily. I'm literally paying for a service I cannot use.
Their Response:
When I explained my legitimate business use case, their support team essentially told me:

"Your usage pattern deviates from the norm"
"We need to protect our resources"
They keep applying restrictions even though I'm NOT exceeding my rate limits

The Reality:
They're using "security measures" as an excuse to prevent paying customers from actually using what they paid for. My work changed - that doesn't make it suspicious or abusive.
What's Particularly Frustrating:

I offered to upgrade to a higher plan - they didn't provide clear guidance
I'm a single user, not sharing my account
I'm within my subscription limits
They keep restricting me anyway

Account Protection at the Expense of Customers:
Ahrefs claims they need to "protect resources," but there are technical solutions that don't punish legitimate paying customers. Other SEO tools (SEMrush, Moz) handle high-volume domain analysis without these issues.
Bottom Line:
If your work involves analyzing multiple domains regularly, be warned: Ahrefs may restrict your account even when you're staying within your paid limits. Their "suspicious activity" system appears to prioritize automation over legitimate business use cases.
I'm now forced to consider alternatives like SEMrush or Moz because I literally cannot do my job with these constant restrictions.
Save your money and frustration - look elsewhere if you need reliable, consistent access for domain analysis work.

$249/month paid, still treated like a criminal – Ahrefs abuses its monopoly

I paid $249 per month for Ahrefs with a clear purpose: finding expired domains and analyzing referring domains using Batch Analysis.

While doing manual research, Ahrefs suddenly blocked my usage with the message “Suspicious activity detected” and accused me of using bots.

This is unacceptable.

I contacted support and clearly told them:
I am a real, paying user
I was using Ahrefs manually
No automation, no scripts, no abuse
Instead of providing logs, proof, or real explanation, the support agent simply sent me a privacy / usage policy link and ended the conversation.

Let’s be honest:
If heavy usage is not allowed, WHY sell a $249 plan?
Why not show clear hard limits inside the tool?
Why randomly accuse users of bot activity without evidence?
This behavior clearly shows Ahrefs acts like they are the only SEO tool in the market, ignoring basic customer respect.
Blocking access first and explaining later (or not explaining at all) is bad business practice.

Ahrefs is expensive, arrogant, and unsafe for serious SEO professionals who actually use the tool heavily.

They are thieves and scammers!

They are thieves, I have paid for a "Standard account," and all I get is suspicious account activity, contact support and upon asking the support, they said you are using Ahrefs extensively, If I have paid for something, then I'll obviously use the way I want to use it!

And their support system lacks the most important thing which is "Support"!

Most of the time site is down, and no data is fetched; upon asking the support, they aren't doing anything!

And in response, they are saying that its for few hours, How many few hours? like 200 is few hours for you?

They are just lying to steal your money, never buying this Ahrefs again!

They are just there for the money and not the support they need to provide!

Now they have removed my "standard account" and demoting me to free account, remember renewal date was Aug 21, 2024!

They are thieves and scammers!
Stay away from them!

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. These restrictions are automatically put in place when users show activity that goes against our ToS, including but not limited to, account sharing, data scraping, and executing unauthorized calls. You can find out more here: https://ahrefs.com/legal/terms#unauthorized-uses

When you spoke to support, you acknowledged that you had recently been using the service outside your normal usage. We do understand your frustration. However, please understand that these restrictions are only temporary (a few hours) and are in place to ensure the stability of our platform for all of our users. Without them, we run into the downtimes you mentioned in your review. Thank you for your understanding.
