Air Transat traumatic experience - nearly destroy my Canadian holiday

If I I am deeply dissatisfied with Air Transat.

My rating would be -5 stars or triple Fs.

My experience has been highly disappointing. Flight arrangements for 1st August 2024 (bear in mind the tickets were booked in November 2023). Despite providing all necessary documentation and evidence at check-in, my family’s tickets were not recognised in their system at Manchester Airport. The staff falsely claimed I had used a third-party agent, which was incorrect, and support emails clearly confirm my direct booking. After contacting customer service for 40 minutes, I was charged, but it yielded no results—my tickets remained unfound. I noticed my seats had been allocated to another passenger, so it was a case of double-booking, which I won't admit to. I contacted customer service again (30 minutes), and we were assigned another seat shortly before departure. On the flight, we also did not receive the meal we had paid for, adding to the frustration. This flight ordeal, including emotional distress and a negative travel experience, involved separating kids from their grandmother.

After my trip, I chased Air Transat on Facebook and by telephone for 4 months. Their complaint system is designed to wear down complainers like me. The whole experience resulted in a maximum of $150 in compensation, a contribution towards future Air Transat airline tickets. I haven't used Air Transat since what good is this compensation?

No admission of double booking. No sincere apology. The baggage handler even broke one of the luggage.
It is unacceptable to treat my family this way.

Now I get to the airport 4 hours early due to this experience. Living with the constant fear of double booking and accused of lying.

Note the experience is on 1 Aug 2024 not 31 Jan 2025.

Home from a wonderful winter getaway!

Home from a wonderful winter getaway!
Just returned from my 10‑day holiday at the extraordinary Grand Sirenis Mayan Beach Resort & Spa in Riviera Maya, Mexico. I have to give a huge shout‑out to Air Transat for making both flights smooth, comfortable, and truly enjoyable.
A special thank‑you to Sarah, Flight Attendant at Air Transat for organizing my booking with such care.

Grateful appreciation as well to Flight Director Gurinder Singh, Flight Attendant Jelena, and their entire onboard team. Their professionalism, warmth, and genuine hospitality made the journey a pleasure for me and for everyone on board.
It is always a joy to see great people elevating the travel experience. Thank you to both teams & Skal: Frank Vismeg,

Very bad customer service

How is it acceptable to wait more than two hours just to speak with a representative? This is extremely unprofessional, especially when the issue is caused by a problem on your website. Please take action to significantly reduce wait times.
Two hours seems to be the minimum—I have even waited three hours, only for the call to be disconnected. This is one of the worst customer service experiences I have encountered. You need to do better.

Lisbon to Toronto

I flew from Lisbon to Toronto and Toronto to Lisbon with Air Transat and would say that compared to flying with Air Canada, their service is worse. Firstly, they don't offer headphones or a blanket and dinner service didn't start until almost four hours into the flight. It was very basic even for airplane food standards.
My return flight landed in Lisbon over an hour late which didn't give me enough time to catch the connecting flight from Lisbon to Barcelona. When I mentioned this to an Air Transat flight attendant upon landing, his response was 'What do you want me to do about it?' I was simply looking for some assistance in a stressful situation and was treated very rudely. Extremely unprofessional and unhelpful. Will definitely try to book with another airline in the future.

Delays, awful food, missing luggage

Flying from Toronto to Manchester on Saturday 3rd Jan at 19:15hrs by 19:00hrs the captain informed everybody was on board and we were just waiting for the last few bags to ne loaded. That's when the problems started. The bags started being loaded and then stopped on the conveyor. Then some bags were removed and more were loaded into the same hold apparently because there was an imbalance weight wise. This took about 2 hours to resolve and, as we found out at Manchester, resulted in 15 bags being left in Toronto presumably because the plane was overloaded. Normally we take sandwiches to eat on the plane because the food is not very good but this time we didn't; what a mistake as they served Lasagne which was absolutely disgusting; probably the worst thing I have ever tasted; 2 forkfuls was enough. How anyone could taste this and think it was acceptable is astonishing.
P.S. Still waiting for luggage

Impossible to make a booking

Impossible to make a booking!
Although flight selection on the website is OK, it is impossible to pay for the flight to finalise the booking because Air Transat can't handle UK card payments. The secure card authorisation, or whatever it is called simply doesn't work and bombs out.

So I tried to call the reservation centre. The problem here is that after a plethora of menu options I was told that my call was very important but they were really busy and the the waiting time was currently 2 hours. I never got to find out because I was cut off after about 30 minutes.

If it is this hard to make a booking, what it the rest of the experience like? I decided that I didn't want to find out and I booked flights with Air Canada, which were actually cheaper, as was the seat reservation fee for extra legroom.
It remains to be seen what that experience will be like, but it's a great start. You will probably read about here in 9 months.

Air Transat has terrible customer…

Air Transat has terrible customer service.
I flew with them to Canada, and it was fine. But I wanted to modify my flight, and it was a nightmare. I paid for a modified ticket, but it wouldn't let me do it online, so I had to call the helpline. First, I was on hold for 1 hour, and the system went down. The caller said that they would call me back, but they never did. Then I was on hold for 2.5 hours; four days later, the prices had doubled. If you are unsure about when you will return and may need to change your flights, it's not worth it.

Horrible airline

Horrible airline. Customer service useless, desk agents useless. They were instructed at LGW by Canadian Immigration to let me board but the desk agent kept saying she couldn't process my boarding pass so I was denied boarding. Wouldn't help me at all, couldn't offer alternative flights, wouldn't call someone to authorise a boarding pass, wouldn't put it in writing that they denied me boarding and why. Was on the phone to the contact centre for 2.5 hrs after only to be told by useless staff that they can't do anything with my reservation now. Lost over 1k. The prices are shocking for a so called budget airline, but everything else is on par. Also try to enforce your 2nd hand luggage as checked because they don't have space even when you're the first at the check in counter. Why have a 2 hand luggage policy if you don't have space? Canadian airlines just get worse.

Air Transat rescheduled my flight…

Air Transat rescheduled my flight (Guadalajara) by 2 days (delay) with no reason or compensation aside from accepting a new flight (not a option) or simply refunding. I called customer service to see what potential compensation can be offered and was told to basically deal with it. Although they might be within the "legal rules", this is certainly not the kind of service anyone can rely on. If you're planing a trip and your dates are time sensitive...I would HIGHLY suggest NOT booking with Air Transat as they clearly do not take customer service seriously. First and last time booking with this company.

I wish i could give them 0 stars

I wish i could give them 0 stars. Worst airline ever! Firstly, they did not allow to purchase a bag with the ticket - says baggage avail for a few so you would assume you could pay for this at the airport like with every other airline. No! You go there 4 hours before your flight and get told that they cannot accept any bags because it’s “full” to call customer service which is a waste of customers time. First time i called, they told me i didnt have any booking and it was cancelled (she searched by my name). Then i confirmed with the airport staff that i did have a booking and they cant add any bags within 24 hours to call cargo. I call cargo which doesnt ship any cargo to country of destination ans its not so simple as to drop your bag off at the airport you would have to go to a completely different location. Then i get told that to try waiting if someone doesnt show up. Then i get told that actually its not that they dont have any space - they have restrictions all of a sudden and wont take my bag at all. Im not flying to Antarctica for there to be these weird restrictions nd this should be transparent to customers.

Awful value for money. Charge like a mainstream airline but provide services like a low cost airline

Not sure how they get away with charging like a mainstream airline but having amenities like a low-cost airline.

The seats are incredibly narrow, even a small person’s shoulders will spill over into the space of the seat next to them.

The leg room is okay but in the aisle seat where I was there was two metal pieces of the seat in front significantly reducing the leg room I had.

They only provide old USB ports, no USB-C plugs or proper outlets. There are no air vents to regulate the temperature of your seat area, and the cabin bag space is the smallest I’ve ever seen.

Usually I stick to the mentality of ‘you get what you pay for’ but with Air Transat you definitely get a lot less than you pay for.
