Needs improvement

This is the first card I've ever had that doesn't allow you to pay by debt card unless you're late. So in order to pay I have to give bank information or pay a late fee after my due date when I should easily be able to make a payment days before the due date by debit card.

Worst bank ever

I have an autoloan through this POS bank. I've never been late with a payment. My car was totalled (other party 100% responsible) and it was reported to the bank within 2 days. The other driver's insurance company asked them for the letter of guarantee so they could write the check for the value of the car. Crickets.. I called them 3 or 4 times... over an hour on two of those calls. Chasing and chasing them. It took them 4 weeks to send it. Meanwhile they dropped my credit score by 52 points!!! The insurance company sent the check and Ally confirmed they received it on 4/2 and it would take 10 business days to process. I called again today on 4/18 as nothing has been processed. They told me they just received the check today. What a bunch of lies! I said check the last phone call recording. She said I don't know what another staff member told you but blah blah. I can't access the recordings. She truly did not give a single care in the world that they've totally screwed over one of their customers. I will never touch that company ever again. Absolutely disgusting.

By far one of the worst customer…

By far one of the worst customer experiences I have ever had. The incompetence in customer service is overwhelming. Do not put your money in Ally! They may have great rates but so do a lot of other online banks with better customer service. Just trying to get my account off hold. I was trying to send money via Zelle and a hold was placed on it. Why? Call customer service and it sounds like there is a party going on in the back ground. Incredibly loud background noise and I can't hear them and they have the hardest accent to understand. I'm absolutely convinced that if I could have understood him we probably could have taken two minutes to fix the issue. I don't think he understood what was going on or understood my problem. Think twice before using Ally. Not worth it. As soon as we can get this hold figured out I'm closing my account and moving on. Don't put yourself through this and take a pass on Ally.

Have been depositing checks for years…

Have been depositing checks for years through the app. Now suddenly I get “ check was previously deposited “. This was a check from another Ally account holder! Tried multiple times same failure message. Had a new check issued and same message that the check was already deposited. I have spent hours and hours on the phone over the last 2 weeks and Ally Bank still has not resolved this issue. Just got a canned response in my messages. Ally bank has really gone downhill over the past few years. Takes forever to get a live person on the phone.

Unable to access account for months

I changed my phone number in November. I have called several times since then because I haven't been able to log into my account. Every time, I'm told a specialist will contact me. No one has called yet! It's April. I'm going to discuss closing this account with my husband. I am so frustrated.

Edit* 4/25 I finally received an email to call because of suspicious activity on my account? I’m now able to access.

Ally bank is nothing but a thief….

Ally bank is nothing but a thief….. they put a restriction on my account without any reason immediately I received a wire transfer. They asked me to provide the sender phone number for verification which I did provide for them and they talked to the sender of the money …. After all the verification they refused to take the restriction off my account and yet they refused to refund the money back to the sender . Is been 2 weeks now!!!!! Each and every Customer service will be saying different thing . They are nothing but a thief…. That bank need to be closed by the federal government

Unable to fix login issues for over 2 years

I have been unable to login to my Ally banking account for more than 2 years now. After many calls to Ally my issue is still unresolved. With Ally being an online only bank you'd imagine they would work diligently to fix an inability of a customer to log into their account. Fortunately I've been able to get my money out. Never going back to someone as inept as they seem to be in fixing what's clearly they acknowledged as a technical issue on their end. Ref case #56149545, 56150279

Ally the inept leviathan

If there was a less than one-star rating, Ally would receive it. Somehow, we've financed three vehicles over the last 4 years through Ally. Although much of their apps are self-serve, a good 90-95% of our communication was forced to be with an incredibly inept staff (from front desk to managers to technical). We have spent inordinate amounts of time dealing with what should be simple issues. Scores of hours over four years. We just bought out our current loans and transferred those loans to our local bank. If you want more frustration in your life, secure your loan through Ally!

Ally has become an absolute clown show…

Ally has become an absolute clown show of a bank. I used to be a big fan. I had my own account there and now help maintain an account for my parents.

However, a simple Zelle transaction last month caused them to lock my parents' account last month and trying to get it unlocked has been an absolute nightmare. Five weeks, at least 8 calls, and hours of phone time between multiple agents later (while I was trying to enjoy a much-needed vacation), the issue is STILL not resolved. I've had to re-fax documents they claimed were never received even though I have receipts. I was even called 2 days ago to tell me everything was resolved only to find out it's still locked today. Lost another 45 minutes on the phone with a rep this morning and got nowhere.

The unfortunate thing is that all the reps have been very nice and not from foreign call centers. But whatever systems they have in place to handle matters like mine need a complete overhaul. I've had to spend 30+ minutes just answering security questions MULTIPLE times. I don't think the Pentagon even has such extensive procedures. It has been nothing short of insane.

We have even incurred financial damages from this issue now as auto-payments that were schedule have not been paid. I cannot wait to close this account and be done with these people.

Went WAY downhill

UPDATED REVIEW: (2026)

I don't know what happened to Ally, but they are absolutely terrible now and I have closed all my accounts with them.

I had an issue where there was a fraudulent charge on my account. Ally refused to assist from the moment I submitted the claim. I talked to multiple reps and asked them multiple times why they wouldn't assist and no one could give me clear answer. Also, it seems that their support team is overseas now, which I don't like when dealing with finances.

So, after years banking with Ally, it's time to move on for me. If you're looking for a bank that that takes fraud and customer service seriously, this bank is not for you.

ORIGINAL REVIEW

I'm honestly quite surprised by all the negative reviews. I've been quite happy with Ally. I have two accounts with them, one of them I've had for years, and have never had any issues.

Last fall, I had some trouble withdrawing money from one of their ATMs, and the customer support I received was excellent. Not only were they were very thorough and helped me through everything, but I was actually speaking to someone in the US, instead of one of those dreadful overseas support companies that have no clue what they're doing. And there was hardly any wait time.

I've dealt with other banks in the past that genuinely couldn't care less if you're a satisfied customer or not, and Ally is definitely not one of them, as far as I've experienced. (You can read my other reviews and you'll see that I'm usually very critical)

No complaints on my end!

Worst for Auto Loans

Worst when it comes to auto loans. Zero customer service and the outsourcing is horrible. Since the CFPB has been dismantled this company runs amuck. No regard for cusumer rights. Good luck talking to a supervisor or anybody that cares to listen.

Ally bank is a scam

They blocked my account over a 40 dollar transaction that was deemed suspicious and then they couldn't verify my identity and proceeded to lock away 1600 dollars. Don't bank with them, I've had numerous problems with this bank already when it comes to using my funds.

Opened an account online and was never able to fund it. Couldn’t link a bank account, couldn’t order a debit card, couldn’t add money. Called customer service and the machine said 1 hour wait time. No thanks, closed the account the very next day. Looked here and saw all the horrible reviews. Run away

Referral is a scam.

Referral is a scam.
Had a family member sign up with referral code, do the necessary deposit and waited the 3 months. Back and forth with customer service yielded no result other than for them to keep requesting that the person fulfill the requirements, never understanding that they DID fulfill the requirements. This is a sleazy company, please bank with anyone else.
Also, investment platform is not ideal and could use significant improvement.

Platform is OK, but customer support is challenging

I've been using this bank for many years. I like the simple and intuitive platform. However, customer support has always been challenging, either by phone, chat, or email, because the response often does not get to the point. Last time, the wait time for chat support was 60 minutes. The other time, during regular business hours on the weekday, the call waiting time was 30 minutes before connecting to an offshore person. The offshore agent kept asking me about ten security questions for a call to ask a simple general question, not even related to my Ally account. I hope they respect customers' time.

Ally Bank does not protect you as a…

Ally Bank does not protect you as a consumer, but does intermittently prevent you from making valid purchases yourself. We had made a purchase in early January that never shipped and when we tried to resolve it with the vendor and got no response, we called Ally. They treated this as if it were an FBI investigation and it's been over two weeks and nothing has been credited to our account and the vendor has sent us a fake tracking number. Banks like BOA or Chase would have taken care of this in minutes. Ally is NOT an ally lol.

Ally Bank = Dangerous People

I went to use my Ally Bank debit card this morning to get cash. Card was "denied by your bank"
Opened the App to see my debit card it on hold.
I call the Toll Free number to find there is a

37 minute wait to talk to someone.

Seeing how i am out of gas on the side of the road I figured it would be the best time to let people know the situations you can end up in when your bank does not care about you.
It is nice to know that im not alone. I am seeing LOTS of horrible reviews about Ally putting other people in bad positions while they hold our money.

Ally if you are reading this, I will be closing my account as soon as i get home so you will know who this is.

Customer service downsized and outsourced

I used to like Ally Bank, but not anymore. They have drastically downsized, and are now outsourcing much of their phone support. The primary reason I stuck with Ally was because they used North American employees rather than foreign employees (usually from India.) who I can’t understand and who can’t understand me. Their customer service wait time has more than doubled because of their downsizing. When I complained to them in writing, they used AI to generate a placating response. I’m taking my money elsewhere, where I can access it safely. I no longer trust Ally, and neither should you.

Guetto A$$ customer service, thiefs, they are trying to robb me from a security deposit that a car company credited back to me. Stay away from this fraudulent crooks with their predatory practices. I am taking them to court, I am fighting this.

Poor Protection of your Financial Assets!

Be cautious when dealing with Ally Bank, especially if you need to verify your identity. Unlike major financial institutions such as Capital One, Chase, Bank of America, Citi, USAA, and American Express, Ally Bank lacks the sophisticated technology necessary for timely identity verification. I waited 25 days for assistance, during which their team was unhelpful, uncooperative, and, quite frankly, rude.

These larger banks not only provide efficient online and phone verification but also have physical branch locations where issues can be addressed in person if needed. My frustration with Ally Bank escalated when my primary source of income—Social Security—was deposited into my account every fourth Wednesday of the month. I was unable to access my account and pay my rent and other bills on time due to their lack of support. They froze my account for 25 days and made no attempt to resolve this matter in a timely manner. Instead, they forced me to open a new Capital One checking account and have all my deposits transferred there.

I have reported this activity to the CFPB and noted in my complaint that Ally Bank should pay my late rent fee. If I lose my apartment due to these delays, Ally Bank should be held accountable for the damages associated with finding a new apartment and moving my belongings. As a 75-year-old senior, I should not be facing this insensitivity from a financial institution that claims to protect your assets when, in fact, they do not.
Their only concern is with them, not you. Sound like a familiar Trump narrative. Well, it is!
