A company that preaches values, but sues small businesses instead!
I used to admire Big Spoon Roasters for their craft products and community based image, but after seeing their recent actions, I can’t support them anymore.
They’re currently suing a small family run business Big Spoon Sauce Co. over the name “Big Spoon,” and that they are selling the same products. The other company they are suing, only makes chili crisp oil (a traditional condiment to their owners Chinese heritage), while Big Spoon Roasters has only made nut butters and bars. There is no real product overlap, and the sauce company has been operating peacefully for years. They want to do a chili crisp nut butter in the future so all of a sudden they now have a problem.
Big Spoon Roasters claim "brand confusion" and “irreparable harm,” but their own chili oil product isn’t even on shelves yet! Meanwhile, the family they’re suing is being crushed under legal fees. Worst of all, there ARE MULTIPLE OTHER COMPANIES USING THE NAME "Big Spoon"...including another one that sells nut butter! Big Spoon Roasters hasn’t gone after them. Just the sauce company. Wonder why?
On their website they have info about the case and portray themselves as being victims. Why not sue the other nut butter company with the same name, why a sauce company? Doesn't make any sense and they are using lawyer jargon to sound like they aren't the ones who are actually causing all of this.
This is not what a values driven, community first business looks like. It looks like legal bullying. It looks like cultural appropriation. It looks like a company trying to own the spoon, the spice, and the story—without earning any of it.
